Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of what is known today of Georgia history was preserved through the diligent efforts of a single family. From Wormsloe, their ancestral plantation near Savannah, the De Rennes built an extraordinary collection of books and manuscripts on the history of the state and the Confederacy, much of which is now housed at the University of Georgia and the Museum of the Confederacy. This book focuses on their efforts in the years 1827 through 1970, conveying the passion and purpose with which they pursued their avocation. William Harris Bragg has mined a vast array of archival sources to present this engaging narrative of the De Renne family. He tells how wealthy bibliophile and philanthropist G. W. J. De Renne and his wife, Mary, set the precedent for the family’s accumulation of historic material, how their son established the Wymberley Jones De Renne Georgia Library that bears his name, and how his children in turn expanded upon that tradition. The De Rennes also printed limited editions of primary historical materials beginning with the series known as the Wormsloe Quartos. Bragg’s account of three generations of the De Renne family vividly records their achievements as it reconstructs their life at Wormsloe and follows them in their travels around the world. It provides glimpses into the dynamics and behavior of one of Georgia’s oldest and most prominent families and the evolution of the southern aristocracy. The book draws on newly available material to expand significantly on Ellis Merton Coulter’s 1955 work, Wormsloe, and provides the most complete account to date of the De Rennes. Beyond the story of the De Renne family, Bragg also reveals much about the history of collecting and of the antiquarian book trade, as well as of the evolution of Georgia historical documentation. Appendix material includes genealogical tables and lists of collections and publications, making De Renne: Three Generations of a Georgia Family an invaluable source for all scholars and aficionados of southern history.

M., Before the Georgia Historical Society, at Savannah, Ga;, May 2, 1892 Mr. President and Gentlemen of the Society: About sixty years ago, could you have strolled into the little court-room in the village of Lexington, near our Georgian Athens, you would have seen presiding as judge a very tall and strongly built man of somewhat more than middle age, but who, upon closer scrutiny, had the appearance of one who had grown older than his actual years. Observing him only very slightly, you would have said to yourself that this judge was apparently far above his bar of lawyers and his court-room company, and, had you known nothing of his history, you would have marveled how it had happened to him in life that such a man as he was should be there upon that bench. A large, long head, with bold brow, from beneath which a pair of shrewd, kindly gray eyes looked straight at you, - seemingly straight through you - a large nose, firm compressed lips - the firmest lips you ever saw - full round chin, and strong jaw, made up a face too strong and commanding, but for that kindly expression in those bluish gray eyes. And those eyes! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The son of noted journalist and folklorist Joel Chandler Harris, Julian Harris (1874-1963) struggled all his life to carve his own niche in the world and emerge from the shadow of his famous father. As editor of the Columbus Enquirer-Sun, Harris found both his voice and soapbox. There, with his equally talented wife, journalist Julia Collier Harris, he spent the 1920s fighting the Ku Klux Klan, lynching, anti-evolution laws, Prohibition, corruption in state government, and substandard public education. It took uncommon courage to push a progressive agenda in a provincial cottonmill town like Columbus during the twenties and Harris, more than any other man, deserves credit for freeing Georgia from the grip of the Klan. For his efforts, he and his newspaper won the 1926 Pulitzer Prize for public service; he was the first Georgian to be so honored.

"In the pages that follow, the writer has had in view the desirability of familiarizing the youth of Georgia with the salient facts of the State's history in a way that shall make the further study of that history a delight instead of a task. The stories and the characterizations have been grouped together so as to form a series of connecting links in the rise and progress of Georgia; yet it must not be forgotten that these links are themselves connected with facts and events in the State's development that are quite as interesting, and of as far-reaching importance, as those that have been narrated here..."

Book excerpt: In the tradition of Slaves in the Family, the provocative true account of the hanging of four black people by a white lynch mob in 1912—written by the great-granddaughter of the sheriff charged with protecting them. Harris County, Georgia, 1912. A white man, the beloved nephew of the county sheriff, is shot dead on the porch of a black woman. Days later, the sheriff sanctions the lynching of a black woman and three black men, all of them innocent. For Karen Branan, the great-granddaughter of that sheriff, this isn’t just history, this is family history. Branan spent nearly twenty years combing through diaries and letters, hunting for clues in libraries and archives throughout the United States, and interviewing community elders to piece together the events and motives that led a group of people to murder four of their fellow citizens in such a brutal public display. Her research revealed surprising new insights into the day-to-day reality of race relations in the Jim Crow–era South, but what she ultimately discovered was far more personal. As she dug into the past, Branan was forced to confront her own deep-rooted beliefs surrounding race and family, a process that came to a head when Branan learned a shocking truth: she is related not only to the sheriff, but also to one of the four who were murdered. Both identities—perpetrator and victim—are her inheritance to bear. A gripping story of privilege and power, anger, and atonement, The Family Tree transports readers to a small Southern town steeped in racial tension and bound by powerful family ties. Branan takes us back in time to the Civil War, demonstrating how plantation politics and the Lost Cause movement set the stage for the fiery racial dynamics of the twentieth century, delving into the prevalence of mob rule, the rise of the Ku Klux Klan and the role of miscegenation in an unceasing cycle of bigotry. Through all of this, what emerges is a searing examination of the violence that occurred on that awful day in 1912—the echoes of which still resound today—and the knowledge that it is only through facing our ugliest truths that we can move forward to a place of understanding.
