Book excerpt: Coming into the field as a Translator of Calvin so late as I do, and after the various able Preliminary Notices of my predecessors in the task, it would ill become me to offer any lengthened remarks, either generally on the personal character and theological system of our illustrious author,or more particularly on his merits as a Commentator upon Scripture. It may not, however, be deemed superfluous that I should refer my readers to the brief but interesting Memoir of Calvin, written by his associate and friend Theodore Beza, and translated by Henry Beveridge, Esq., in Volume I. of Calvin’s Tracts in this Series. It would, I presume, be scarcely possible to produce within a similar compass any Biography of the great Reformer which could at all be brought in to competition with this.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume of John Calvin's Harmony of the Law, which is a four volume set on the books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. Unlike typical commentaries that take each verse and chapter as they come in the Bible, these commentaries take you through the four books of the Law as they come up with each topic. As each topic is thought of and discussed, Calvin takes us across all four the books of the Hebrew Law to teach us about the value of the Old Law and what it can teach us today. In today's church there is a lot of people wondering what value the Old Testament beliefs hold for us but Calvin shows that they are as important as they were when Calvin first wrote during the reformation. This book continues the study of the Ten Commandments and all the laws and practices that are related to each of the laws.

A startling discovery—along with an emotional and revelatory reunion with her estranged mother—is forcing Sunny to step out from the shadows of yesterday to embrace an uncertain future.
Download or read book Harmony Ideology written by Laura Nader and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Zapotec observe that 'a bad compromise is better than a good fight'. Why? This study of the legal system of the Zapotec village of Talea suggests that compromise and, more generally, harmony are strategies used by colonized groups to protect themselves from encroaching powerholders or strategies the colonizers use to defend themselves against organized subordinates. Harmony models are present, despite great organizational and cultural differences, in many parts of the world. However, the basic components of harmony ideology are the same everywhere: an emphasis on conciliation, recognition that resolution of conflict is inherently good and that its reverse - continued conflict or controversy - is bad, a view of harmonious behaviour as more civilized than disputing behaviour, the belief that consensus is of greater survival value than controversy. The book's central thesis is that harmony ideology in Talea today is both a product of nearly 500 years of colonial encounter and a strategy for resisting the state's political and cultural hegemony.

Book Synopsis Ecological Law and the Planetary Crisis by : Geoffrey Garver
Download or read book Ecological Law and the Planetary Crisis written by Geoffrey Garver and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses a transdisciplinary systems approach to examine how Earth’s human-caused ecological crisis arose and presents a new legal approach for overcoming it. Ecological Law and the Planetary Crisis first examines how the history of humanity’s social metabolism, along with the history of human inventions and ideas, led to the human-Earth dilemma we see today and explains why contemporary law is inadequate for confronting this dilemma. The book goes on to propose ecological law—law that maintains human activity within ecological limits such as planetary boundaries while ensuring social justice and equity—as an essential element of an urgently needed radical pathway of change toward a perpetual, mutually enhancing human-Earth relationship. Finally, it offers a systems-based analytical tool for organizing actions to promote the transition from environmental to ecological law. Increasing the visibility, clarity and development of ecological law, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of ecological and environmental law and governance.
