Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardwood-dominated temperate forests (mostly in Eastern North America, Europe, North East Asia) provide valuable renewable timber and numerous ecosystem services. Many of these forests have been subjected to harvesting or conversion to agriculture, sometimes over centuries, that have greatly reduced their former extent and diversity. Natural regeneration following harvesting or during post-agricultural succession has often failed to restore these forests adequately. Past harvesting practices and the valuable timber of some species have led to a reduction in their abundance. The loss of apex predators has caused herbivore populations to increase and exert intense browsing pressure on hardwood regeneration, often preventing it. Particularly important are fruit, nut and acorn bearing species, because of their vital role in forest food webs and biodiversity. Restoring hardwood species to natural forests in which they were formerly more abundant will require a number of forest management actions (e.g., resistant hybrids, deer exclosures/protectors, enrichment planting, underplanting, etc.). Similarly, reforesting areas that were once natural forests will also require new silvicultural knowledge. Global warming trends will intensify the need for interventions to maintain the diversity and function of temperate hardwood forests, as well as for increase hardwood reforestation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Planting: A Treatise on the Care of Timber Lands and the Restoration of Denuded Wood-Lands on Plains and Montains for if we really will preserve our natural or wild forests- and this is undoubtedly a much better and cheaper policy than to continue destroying them, and to latter raise, at an enormous cost and loss of time, artificial forests- we have to care for our woods just as fully as the artificial forests in the European countries are treated; for in the preservation of forests it makes no difference at all whether they are originated by nature or by human art, because both are subject to the same dangers and injuries. Unless the natural forests are managed systematically, we cannot but expect that the reparation of damages done to a forest either by accidents or elementary forces, or by the natural course of tree life, will take as many centuries as it would require decades for this purpose, if we assist nature in its regenerating endeavors through the means suggested by scientific forestry. The condition in which our forests are now, is not such as to warrant us in "pooh-poohing" the idea of looking for instruction in this matter to the European nations, and to only glance at their methods of treating forests, because we have a different form of government (see Report of the N. Y. Forest Commission, 1886, page 67.), or because "the entire condition of things here differs so materially from that in the old world." (See Report of the Forest Commission, 1887, page 17.) Certainly there is a great difference between our government and that of most of the European nations, and politico-economical matters are often treated here differently from what they are there; but this does not affect the question of preserving to the succeeding generations the natural resources of a country necessary for the welfare of its inhabitants. Book excerpt: S2Allegheny hardwood regeneration response to block clearcutting, alternate strip clearcutting, and two-cut shelterwood, and in an uncut control was compared. Stand regeneration success was evaluated 5 years after harvest. Clearcutting resulted in high mortality of advance regeneration. Thus, regeneration by block clearcutting was not successful, though both alternate strip clearcutting harvests were successful. The first cut of the shelterwood established new seedlings but did not stimulate growth. Regeneration level increased from inadequate to adequate and remained so after the final harvest. New seedlings appeared in the control after each seed crop, but few survived. Fenced seedlings grew taller in all harvest areas.S3.

This book was released on 2012-12-05 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While restoration ecology has traditionally aimed to re-create some putative more ‘natural’ ecological state, forest landscape restoration (FLR) has emerged over the last decade as an approach aimed more at restoring natural functions, while focusing on meeting human needs. With a view to exploring the practical potential of this approach, this book draws together a team of experts from the natural and social sciences to discuss its success so far in addressing critical issues such as biodiversity, ecological function, and human livelihoods. Applying principles of landscape ecology, restoration ecology, planning theory and conflict management, the book presents a series of case studies which document the approach, and discusses how the approach can help with priority setting for the future. The book will provide a valuable reference to graduate students and researchers interested in ecological restoration, forest ecology and management, as well as to professionals in environmental restoration, natural resource management, conservation, and environmental policy.
