It contains a vigorous defence of the contention that mentally handicapped human beings are persons. It attacks both the contemporary philosophical attempts to dismiss the personhood of mentally handicapped people and the genocidal policies which those attempts suggest. It explores the logic of the attitudes which have lead to the marginalisation and oppression of the mentally handicapped.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lack of good statistical information had been a major factor in the poor planning of services for the mentally handicapped in the late 1960s. The principal object of this book was to provide an accurate factual basis for the planning of future services. Originally published in 1972, this title is based on three years’ extensive research and consists primarily of statistical studies rather than case studies. There is a survey of facilities provided by hospitals for the mentally handicapped and a sample survey of three Hospital Regions indicating the characteristics and disabilities of the mentally handicapped inpatients. Also included are two cohort studies, one of the subsequent experience of patients after their first admittance to a hospital, and one of the subsequent experience of all first referrals to a Local Authority service. Both studies were carried out to determine trends in the patterns of care. This was the first time that cohort techniques had been applied in this field in this country. Since effective long-term planning depends upon the coordination of the work of Local Authorities and hospitals, it is unrealistic to divorce the need for hospital beds from community provision. This book, therefore, examined the present services for the mentally handicapped in the round. It is supplemented by an extensive bibliography and numerous tables and diagrams. As a result, it should be of particular interest to psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, hospital administrators, senior nursing staff and Local Authority social service administrators. This book is a re-issue originally published in 1972. The language used is reflective of its era and no offence is meant by the Publishers to any reader by this re-publication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over recent years the policy of isolating and institutionalizing mentally handicapped people has gradually been dismantled and a major shift to community care has taken place. But integration within the general community and access to special services has greatly increased the number of people with a need to know about mental handicap. Each profession or discipline has its own terminology; nowadays one must be conversant with all of them. In this comprehensive dictionary Mary Lindsey has brought together terms and concepts from a wide variety of fields. Approximately 2,400 entries are included, ranging in length from concise explanations to encyclopaedic essays, but always expressed in clear, simple language. Where appropriate, suggestions for further reading are made and possible sources of further information given. An extensive system of cross-references leads the interested reader further and makes valuable connections between entries. The medical aspects of mental handicap, its causes, prognoses and treatments, are of course covered in detail. But although the cause of mental handicap may be medical, subsequent interventions may be sociological, psychological, educational, medical, paramedical or psychiatric. This is reflected in the choice of entries, making the Dictionary an invaluable source of reference for all those involved with mentally handicapped people in any capacity whatsoever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1980s there was growing interest in the topic of ageing and learning disabilities, for two principal reasons. First, the life expectancy of people with learning disabilities had risen significantly over the previous decades and many, once infancy had been survived, could expect a life span similar to that of non-disabled people. Secondly, a growing commitment on the part of the government and service providers to make provision for people with disabilities in the community rather than in institutions, had focused attention on this group. Originally published in 1988, reissued here with a new foreword, this book was one of the first on this subject. It examines epidemiology and mortality, and medical and psychiatric issues compared with non-disabled older people. It considers how people with learning disabilities change in intellectual and adaptive function with age, the nature of family relationships relevant therapeutic programmes, and policy and the development of services. The book represented a major review of a hitherto neglected topic and would interest gerontologists, psychologists and professional health, social and educational staff concerned with the welfare of older people with learning disabilities. This book is a re-issue originally published in 1988. The language used is a reflection of its era and no offence is meant by the Publishers to any reader by this re-publication.

Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to provide parents, staff and others involved with mentally handicapped children and adults with up to-date basic information and advice in their management. Methods of care, treatment and management of a heterogeneous group of people such as the mentally handicapped must of necessity include many disciplines if they are to be given an adequate service. This book is an attempt to bring the knowledge and experience of many people together. The size of the book could have been increased to include more detail on other aspects of the subject but this might easily have diminished its value as a convenient reference to as wide a readership as possible, both professional and non-professional. The contents deal essentially with the needs of the severely mentally handicapped and should have an application in most parts of the world. Much of the information and advice on services, and on treatment and management, is based on the experience of specialists working in the United Kingdom, this now being standard practice in most parts of the world.

Book excerpt: The right of adults with sound mind to consent to treatment or risk their own health for the benefit of the community in a clinical trial is unequivocally recognised by the law. But what about those vulnerable by virtue of their age, nature or position in society? Experts from the fields of medicine, philosophy, theology and law, explore the ethical and legal principles which seek to reconcile the individual's right to autonomy with the need to protect vulnerable groups. Discussions refer both to specific groups (premature babies, children, people with mental handicaps) and specific issues (cases of abuse by sterilization of women, suicide, the right to information).
