Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, Teresa Morgan offers a radically new interpretation of 'in Christ'and related expressions in the undisputed letters of Paul. Starting from a reassessment of Deissmann's Die neutestamentliche Formel "in Christo Jesu", she argues that Deissmann's philology is flawed, the Schweitzerian concept of 'participation in Christ' which is indebted to it is problematic, and many contemporary accounts of participation are better understood in other terms. Through close readings of each letter, Teresa Morgan shows how Paul uses en Christo language instrumentally, to speak of what God has done 'through' Christ, by Christ's death, and 'encheiristically', to speak of the life the faithful now live 'in Christ's hands': in Christ's power, under his authority, under his protection, and in his care. This creative use of en Christo language forms part of and connects Paul's soteriology, eschatology, and Christology, shaping his narrative of God's intervention in the world, the relationship between God, Christ, and the faithful, the lordship and work of Christ between the resurrection and the parousia, and God's ultimate triumph. This narrative is closely connected with Paul's ecclesiology and ethics, where life 'in Christ's hands' is envisaged as the this-worldly dimension of the new creation: an aspect ofeternal life already active in the present time. In Christ's hands the faithful, not least Paul himself, live a new life in communities with a distinctive structure and dynamic. In Christ's hands, they hope to remain in right-standing with God and serve God until Christ's return.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible has a way of shocking us. If Americans could still blush, we might blush at the words, "Rejoice in the wife of your youth, a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love" (Proverbs 5:18-19). But, of course, sin always tries to trash God's gifts. So we can't just celebrate sex for what God made it to be; we have to fight what sin turned it into. The contributors to this unique volume encourage you to do both: celebrate and struggle. This book has something for all-men and women, married and single-from contributors like John Piper, C. J. and Carolyn Mahaney, Mark Dever, Al Mohler, Carolyn McCulley, and others.

Book excerpt: In Pilgrim Letters, Curtis Freeman takes disciples on a contemporary journey into an ancient faith. The book is a series of letters written by "Interpreter" to "Pilgrim" that provide "instruction in the basic teaching of Christ" for candidates preparing to be baptized. The letters are framed by a short catechism based on the six principles enumerated in Hebrews 6:1-2--(1) repentance, (2) faith, (3) baptism, (4) laying on of hands, (5) resurrection, and (6) eternal judgment. The letters lead Pilgrim (the disciple/catechumen/baptismal candidate) step by step through the basics of Christian faith. Each letter explores one of the principles by providing a simple explanation and setting the practice within a broad biblical, historical, and theological context. The theological tenor of the letters is evangelical-catholic, free church-ecumenical, and ancient-future. A set of discussion questions follows each letter as does a short bibliography for further reading. Each letter begins with an image from William Blake's illustrations of John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress and exemplifying the subject of the letter, followed by an epigraph from the story that fits into the themes of the catechism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christ Letter is a conversation partner for pastors and students of the Bible who want to wrestle with the meaning of the biblical text for Christian living today. Scholarly commentaries perform an essential task, but they often leave today's believers on their own when it comes to making Paul's letter come alive. Doug Webster weaves together deep biblical insights, penetrating cultural perspectives, and stories of transformation into a pastoral commentary that promises to release the powerful message of Ephesians. This commentary offers lines of thought, illustrations, and applications that carry the gospel into the present situation. Webster draws out the personal and practical impact of Paul's spiritual direction for today. The Christ Letter gives pastors a fresh perspective and a better handle on how to preach Ephesians effectively. Webster inspires and guides faithful disciples in what it means to follow Jesus in a Christ-centered way.

Book excerpt: This volume provides a detailed examination of Paul's use of the phrase 'Christ in You' and highlights its importance for better understanding Paul's eschatological thought. Having previously received relatively little scholarly attention, the expression 'Christ in You' has often been viewed as synonymous with the phrase 'in Christ.' Barcley recognizes a distinction and argues that Paul uses 'Christ in You' specifically to emphasize the proper functioning of faith in life. 'Christ in You' indicates that believers have undergone a spiritual transformation, fully incorporating Christ into their lives. This study will be of value to religious scholars, pastors, and anyone with an interest in New Testament thought.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Holy Scriptures, the Bible, is the foundation of our faith. It is God-breathed. It gives us the full knowledge of Him and of His Son. “This is the eternal life, that they should know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent” (John 17:3). God’s word gives us eternal life through faith in Christ Jesus. It makes us men and women of God. It is most profitable for our spiritual life, for it teaches us, convicts us, corrects us, and instructs us in righteousness. Thus, we are made complete and fully equipped to do God’s will. We are exhorted by our Lord himself to search the Scriptures for in them is the witness concerning Him (see John 5:37). A special blessing is given by God to those who read, hear and keep His word (see Revelation 1:3). The New Testament is composed of twenty-seven books. Each of these twenty-seven books reveals Christ to us in a special aspect of His fullness. Thus, we are able to know Christ in His fullness. In this volume, each book in the New Testament is briefly discussed, with special attention to seeing Christ in His fullness. It is not an exhaustive study, its purpose simply being to offer a taste of the sweet word of God so as to induce us to search His word more diligently. May He draw us deeper into His word so that we may be drawn deeper into Him.
