This controversial play asks the question: what happens if you raise a boy to sew and behave as a girl, and raise his sister to fight as a soldier? For the first time, Guillén de Castro’s La fuerza de la costumbre (‘The Force of Habit’) is available to English and Spanish audiences with a performance-tested translation on facing pages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Golden Age of Spanish drama extends from the close of the 15th century to the death of Calderón in 1681. During that time, the humanists, as dramatists, followed Italy's artistic awakening direction, and imitated Classical drama. With originality and dreams of greatness, they subverted the nature of tragedy; modified the approach of Comedy and invented the New Play, the Comedia Nueva. In it the poet-dramatists introduced important modificaitons of realism, included imagined reality, Christian symbolism and theatricality, as artistic truth. They elaborate all kinds of syntheses. For this reason, the Spanish Golden Age theater can be viewed as part of a tradition that includes the Greco-Roman comedy and tragedy, Christian tragedy, and the authentic national literary and dramatic tendencies. The entries in this reference book explore the fascinating history of the Golden Age of Spanish drama. The volume begins with an introductory overview of the literary, cultural, and historical contexts that shaped dramatic writing of the period. The book then presents alphabetically arranged essays for nineteen significant Spanish dramatists of the Golden Age. Each essay is written by an expert contributor and includes biographical information, an analysis and evaluation of major works, a discussion of critical response to the plays, and an extensive bibliography of primary and secondary sources. The volume closes with a selected general bibliography of central critical studies of Golden Age Spanish drama.

If the expected cultural exchange takes place, then an enduring relationship of tolerance and understanding forms between the two worlds. Bonds that surpass temporal, geographic, and philosophical specificity attest to humankind's universal and atemporal need for myth. The questions, proposed answers, and subsequent revisions will, it is hoped, coexist in an ongoing dialogue among ancient, Golden Age, and contemporary individuals.

Book excerpt: The theatrum mundi metaphor was well-known in the Golden Age, and was often employed, notably by Calderón in his religious theatre. However, little account has been given of the everyday exploitation of the idea of the world as stage in the mainstream drama of the Golden Age. This study examines how and why playwrights of the period time and again created characters who dramatize themselves, who re-invent themselves by performing new roles and inventing new plots within the larger frame of the play. The prevalence of metatheatrical techniques among Golden Age dramatists, including Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina, Calderón de la Barca and Guillén de Castro, reveals a fascination with role-playing and its implications. Thacker argues that in comedy, these playwrights saw role-playing as a means by which they could comment on and criticize the society in which they lived, and he reveals a drama far less supportive of the social status quo in Golden Age Spain than has been traditionally thought to be the case.

Excerpt: ...of the situations are similar, and yet the incidents by which they are produced have lost all their improbability, and kept all their spirit and effect. It is but just to Guillen de Castro to add, Guillen de Castro that Diego's delight at the high spirit ofe?ualin 00 1 some pas his son, though not so happily excited, issages-at least as forcibly and as poetically re-presented in the Spanish as in the French scene. The quarrel too between the Count and Diego is more naturally conducted and more animated in Guillen de Castro than in Corneille. The lines in which the vigorous and insolent Lozano magnifies the manliness of his daily diversions, the lances he breaks, and the horses he tires, give a more lively picture of the advantages of youth than the well-reasoned speeches and refined sarcasms of the Count in the third scene of the French tragedy. There is one other situation in which In one scene superior to the Spanish author has yet more decidedly Ms imitator. the advantage over his imitator, viz. the first interview between Diego and the Cid, after the latter has avenged his insult, and obeyed hisinjunctionsby slaying the Count. There is more pareutal fondness and natural anxiety in Diego's soliloquy, more passionate delight at the first approach of his son, and more dignified exultation at the vindication of his honour and the hereditary prowess of his family than is usually Guillen de to be found in Spanish plays. The simple Castro and otway. an(j poetical diction, the sweetness of the numbers, and the tenderness of the sentiments, render the scene worthy of our Otway, and not unlike the best passages of his works. The English poet, however, though he bears a strong resemblance to.Guillen de Castro, in the extravagance and incoherence...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sins of the Fathers considers sins as nodes of cultural anxiety and explores the tensions between competing organizational categories for moral thought and behaviours, namely the Seven Deadly Sins and the Ten Commandments. Hilaire Kallendorf explores the decline and rise of these organizational categories against critical transformations of the early modern period, such as the accession of Spain to a position of world dominance and the arrival of a new courtly culture to replace an old warrior ethos. This ground-breaking study is the first to consider Spanish Golden Age comedias as an archive of moral knowledge. Kallendorf has examined over 800 of these plays to illustrate how they provide insight into aspects of early modern experience such as food, sex, work, and money. Finally, Kallendorf engages the theoretical terminology of Marxist literary criticism to demonstrate the inherent ambiguity of cultural change.
