Book excerpt: The Rapid Visual Screening (RVS) handbook can be used by trained personnel to identify, inventory, and screen buildings that are potentially seismically vulnerable. The RVS procedure comprises a method and several forms that help users to quickly identify, inventory, and score buildings according to their risk of collapse if hit by major earthquakes. The RVS handbook describes how to identify the structural type and key weakness characteristics, how to complete the screening forms, and how to manage a successful RVS program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: RP 10 allows federal agencies to identify conditions in an existing building that may pose unacceptable seismic risks to the agency in case of undesirable performance of the building during an earthquake. Agency exposure to unacceptable risks is generally determined through a seismic evaluation and risk assessment of the building. RP 10 provides triggers for a seismic evaluation for project circumstances such as major alterations, additions, or repairs, as well as change of use or leasing requirements. Evaluation necessitated by triggers is referred to as the mandatory process. RP 10 additionally addresses risk awareness by having agencies proactively implement evaluations based on inventory screening, which is independent of passive trigger requirements identified in the mandatory process. This process is referred to as the screening process. RP 10 provides circumstances to assist an agency in developing a screening process. RP 10 also identifies buildings exempt from seismic evaluation. RP 10 provides the minimum seismic performance objective for evaluation of existing buildings owned or leased by the Federal Government. The basic performance objective is based on risk to occupant safety in a large, rare earthquake by total or partial collapse of the building. Higher performance objectives are provided that can be used to assess the risks of loss of operative systems, extended re-occupancy and recovery time, or economic losses. RP 10 references model building codes published by the International Code Council as well as national consensus standards published by the American Society of Civil Engineers to provide the basis for defining seismic performance objectives, evaluation procedures, and, where necessary, retrofit criteria.

Book excerpt: These guidelines offer practical recommendations on several aspects affecting the design and safety of new and existing petrochemical facilities both during and following an earthquake. In the area of new design, this book emphasizes interpretations of the intent of building codes as applied to petrochemical facilities, and gives practical guidance on design details and considerations that are not included in building codes. For existing facilities, the authors present evaluation methodologies that rely heavily on experience from past earthquakes, coupled with focused analyses. Guidelines for Seismic Evaluation and Design of Petrochemical Facilities is an updated edition in a collection of state-of-the-practice reports produced by the ASCE Petrochemical Committee. It will be valuable to structural design engineers, operating company personnel responsible for establishing seismic design and construction standards, and local building authorities.

Book excerpt: Prepared by the Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering of ASCE This TCLEE Monograph provides guidelines for the seismic evaluation and upgrade of water transmission facilities, including aqueducts, tunnels, canals, buried pipelines, elevated pipelines and their appurtenances. Topics covered include the performance of these facilities in past earthquakes; geotechnical issues; performance criteria; risk analysis; analysis methods; and a series of case studies. The guidelines can also be used for the design of new water transmission facilities. The case studies cover seismic designs and retrofits for the Mokelumne Aqueduct, the Contra Costa Canal, the Borel Canal, buried pipes at fault crossings, and auxiliary water fire fighting systems. The case studies also examine post-earthquake operations, financial issues, and the benefits of seismic retrofits.
