Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Preface: -- The Environmental Education Teacher Resource Handbook is one of a series of practical references for curriculum developers, education faculty, veteran teachers, and student teachers. The handbook is designed to provide information on the background of environmental education (EE) curriculum, as well as current, comprehensive information on publications, standards, and special materials for K-12 EE. Think of this handbook as the first place to look when you are revising or developing your EE curriculum-or if you need resource information on EE any time of the year. This handbook does not seek to prescribe any particular form of curriculum, nor does it follow any set of standards or guidelines. Instead, the book provides a general grounding in the EE curriculum, so that you can use this information and then proceed in the direction best suited for your budget, your school, and your district. What this handbook gives you is a sense of the numerous options that are available-it is up to you to use the information to develop the appropriate curriculum or program for your situation.

The four strands include: (1) Questioning and Analysis Skills; (2) Knowledge of Environmental Processes and Systems; (3) Skills for Understanding and Addressing Environmental Issues; and (4) Personal and Civic Responsibility. The Guidelines describe a level of skill or knowledge appropriate for each of three grade levels--fourth, eighth, and twelfth. (CCM)

Book excerpt: This resource guide is designed to help educators find curricula, multimedia resources, and other educational materials that can enhance the teaching of environmental education in a variety of settings. Curriculum guides and other educational materials listed in this guide were evaluated by classroom teachers, content experts, and environmental educators. Each set of materials was reviewed by at least three people. Curriculum materials included in this compendium were evaluated using the Environmental Education Materials Guidelines for Excellence developed by the North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE). The write-ups were designed to point out the variety of factors an educator may wish to consider when deciding which materials are most appropriate for a particular group of students and how those materials might be used most effectively. The first section of this guide highlights approximately 50 environmental education curriculum materials. Each entry contains a summary of the curriculum information about grade levels, subject areas, author, publisher, and price; comments specific to the six key characteristics of quality environmental education materials according to the Guidelines for Excellence; and a sample of quotations from the reviewers' evaluation sheets. The second section contains an annotated listing of support materials. Appendices include a curriculum matrix, publisher index, and an author/editor index. (PVD)

Book excerpt: This curriculum guideline for environmental education in Scottish schools is for levels 10-14, 14-16, and post-16. The rationale of the program is based on a belief of uneasiness of ordinary people about their environment, the relationship of people with their environment, a need for change, a lack of current progress, the need to teach for the environment, and the development of an environmental ethic. The aim of the curriculum is identified as "education in and through the environment, education about the environment, and education for the environment." The guiding principles are based on: an ecocentric and concentric approach; a holistic view; a coherent, continuous, and progressive lifelong process; direct experience; interdisciplinary character; environmental issues; problem solving; a variety of teaching and learning approaches; being pupil centered; outward looking; generating action; and being exemplary. Course topics are developed for primary, secondary, and post-16 levels. Collaboration between environmental organizations is stressed along with an awareness of available resources. The use of primary environmental sources is advocated. Means of implementation and recommendations are given for the curriculum. Appendices include a flowchart of the "Framework for the Production of a School Environmental Education Policy," and a listing of environmental organizations, with addresses. (ML)

Book excerpt: Here are the tools and skills needed to conduct meaningful, comprehensive evaluations How do we know if a conservation education or outreach program is working? Practical Evaluation for Conservation Education and Outreach: Assessing Impacts & Enhancing Effectiveness presents a simple approach to using evaluation to design, monitor and assess education and outreach. It is for anyone whose organization or work involves creating educational programs designed to raise conservation awareness and promote pro-conservation behaviors. Even more than a how-to book, it can help you to build your organization’s capacity to conduct meaningful, comprehensive evaluations. The book’s purpose is to provide specific skills and knowledge that they can immediately put to use in conducting evaluation studies of conservation education programs. The reader will build an understanding that: - Evaluation yields useful information - Evaluation should be a part of a program’s design process - Evaluation can be a positive experience - Evaluation contributes to conservation education and outreach program’s success The reader will build their knowledge of: - Key evaluation terms and concepts - The relationship between evaluation and research - How evaluation processes and finding can contribute to decision making - The strengths and weaknesses of different evaluation approaches and data collection methods - The relationship among a program’s goals, objective, activities and expected outcomes The readers will be able to - Develop and refine key evaluation questions - Review and contribute to an evaluation plan - Construct and improve data-collection instruments - Collect credible and reliable data - Interpret results and draw conclusions This book provides practical advice on conducting evaluation that is specific for conservation professionals. Case studies describe how evaluation has led to program improvements in a range of conservation settings. While there are numerous books that describe how to conduct program evaluation, none provide specific examples and tools relevant to improving environmental outcomes.
