Instead, it zeros in on what can make the most dramatic impact and ensure long-lasting improvement." "Drawing on the latest research in positive psychology, research in positive psychology, appreciative inquiry, and sport psychology, authors Gerson and Gerson introduce important building blocks for creating strong relationships; questionnaires and assessments to help uncover clues to what drives an individual's success; and a Talent Optimization Performance System that makes their Positive CORE model both tactical and practical in any coaching, performance appraisal, or ongoing performance management situation."--Jacket

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coal- and gas-based power plants currently supply the largest proportion of the world’s power generation capacity, and are required to operate to increasingly stringent environmental standards. Higher temperature combustion is therefore being adopted to improve plant efficiency and to maintain net power output given the energy penalty that integration of advanced emissions control systems cause. However, such operating regimes also serve to intensify degradation mechanisms within power plant systems, potentially affecting their reliability and lifespan.Power plant life management and performance improvement critically reviews the fundamental degradation mechanisms that affect conventional power plant systems and components, as well as examining the operation and maintenance approaches and advanced plant rejuvenation and retrofit options that the industry are applying to ensure overall plant performance improvement and life management.Part one initially reviews plant operation issues, including fuel flexibility, condition monitoring and performance assessment. Parts two, three and four focus on coal boiler plant, gas turbine plant, and steam boiler and turbine plant respectively, reviewing environmental degradation mechanisms affecting plant components and their mitigation via advances in materials selection and life management approaches, such as repair, refurbishment and upgrade. Finally, part five reviews issues relevant to the performance management and improvement of advanced heat exchangers and power plant welds. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, Power plant life management and performance improvement is an essential reference for power plant operators, industrial engineers and metallurgists, and researchers interested in this important field. Provides an overview of the improvements to plant efficiency in coal- and gas-based power plants Critically reviews the fundamental degradation mechanisms that affect conventional power plant systems and components, noting mitigation routes alongside monitoring and assessment methods Addresses plant operation issues including fuel flexibility, condition monitoring and performance assessment

Book excerpt: This book reports on a set of advances relating to nonlinear observer design, with a special emphasis on high-gain observers. First, it covers the design of filters and their addition to the observer for reducing noise, a topic that has been so far neglected in the literature. Further, it describes the adaptive re-design of nonlinear observers to reduce the effect of parametric uncertainty. It discusses several limitations of classical methods, presenting a set of successfull solutions, which are mathematically formalised through Lyapunov stability analysis, and in turn validated via numerical simulations. In the second part of the book, two applications of the adaptive nonlinear observers are described, such in the estimation of the liquid water in a hydrogen fuel cell and in the solution of a common cybersecurity problem, i.e. false data injection attacks in DC microgrids. All in all, this book offers a comprehensive report on the state-of-the-art in nonlinear observer design for energy systems, including mathematical demonstrations, and numerical and and experimental validations.

Book excerpt: The performance of model predictive control (MPC) largely depends on the accuracy of the prediction model and of the constraints the system is subject to. However, obtaining an accurate knowledge of these elements might be expensive in terms of money and resources, if at all possible. In this thesis, we develop novel learning-based MPC frameworks that actively incentivize learning of the underlying system dynamics and of the constraints, while ensuring recursive feasibility, constraint satisfaction, and performance bounds for the closed-loop. In the first part, we focus on the case of inaccurate models, and analyze learning-based MPC schemes that include, in addition to the primary cost, a learning cost that aims at generating informative data by inducing excitation in the system. In particular, we first propose a nonlinear MPC framework that ensures desired performance bounds for the resulting closed-loop, and then we focus on linear systems subject to uncertain parameters and noisy output measurements. In order to ensure that the desired learning phase occurs in closed-loop operations, we then propose an MPC framework that is able to guarantee closed-loop learning of the controlled system. In the last part of the thesis, we investigate the scenario where the system is known but evolves in a partially unknown environment. In such a setup, we focus on a learning-based MPC scheme that incentivizes safe exploration if and only if this might yield to a performance improvement.

Book excerpt: Healthcare Organizations offer significant opportunities for change and improvement in their overall performance. Hospitals and clinics are generally large, complex, and inefficient, and need serious development in process workflow and management systems, which will ultimately lead to better patient and financial outcomes. The National Academy of Medicine has stated that hospital systems are broken, and that they must begin by "... improving hospital efficiency and patient flow, and using operational management methods and information technologies." In fact, costs and quality are two of the important aspects of the "triple aim" in healthcare. One area that offers significant potential for improvement is through the application of performance improvement methods to patient and process flows. Performance improvement has a significant impact on a hospital’s over financial and strategic performance. Performance improvement involves the deployment of quantitative and scientific methods to model and influence the functioning of organizations. Performance improvement professionals are tasked with managing a variety of activities, such as deploying new information technologies, serving as project managers for construction events, re-engineering departmental process workflow, eliminating bottlenecks, and improving the flow and movement of patients between resource-intensive clinical areas. All of these are high risk, and require use of advanced, sophisticated methods to improve efficiency and quality, while minimizing disruptions from change. This updated edition is a comprehensive and concise guide to performance improvement in healthcare. It describes the management engineering principles focused on designing optimal management and information systems and processes. Case studies and examples are integrated throughout all chapters.

Book excerpt: The Supreme Court decision that property owners may be entitled to compensation for government regulations that deprive them of reasonable use of their property has thrown the land-use field into a state of turmoil. Will municipal land-use ordinances be found excessive? What regulations can be considered a reasonable exercise of police power for public health, safety, and welfare? Will municipalities be liable for compensation to property owners if development is restricted? How can municipalities and developers plan in the wake of this decision?Ordinance provisions cover components of subdivision regulation: general provisions, definitions, administration, procedure, design and improvements, off-tract improvements, and documents to be submitted. The Subdivision and Site Plan Handbook provides a narrative on the background, rationale, and intent of each requirement accompanying the model ordinance; gives an overview of the history of subdivision regulation in the United States; traces the evolution of land-use regulation through various stages; and presents the legal context for present-day regulation. The book has been designed for use by government administrators, developers, planners, attorneys, and others interested in land-use regulation. The model ordinance represents the most current thinking about land use and site control and responds to questions raised by the Supreme Court decision. David Listokin and Carole Walker's analyses are flexible, efficient, responsive to local conditions, and balance regulatory costs and benefits. This is a definitive and invaluable resource!

The authors' framework eliminates outdated, low-value techniques originally created for manufacturing firms, replacing them with advanced techniques that fully leverage your investments in technology. Tyagi and Gupta begin by explaining why conventional balanced scorecard approaches don't work well for service organizations, discussing issues ranging from the inherent variability of customers, servers, and processes, the crucial importance of engagement, and the unique challenges of service innovation. Next, they introduce a Service Scorecard framework that encompasses the seven key elements of service organization success: Growth, Leadership, Acceleration, Collaboration, Innovation, Execution, and Retention. You'll learn how to set clear performance targets at the function and business level; benchmark performance against best practices; identify improvement opportunities; and capture performance data that offers a leading indicator for financials. Their proven approach is designed for easy understanding and implementation without the need for expensive consultants. Simply put, it offers today's most direct path to measuring performance and optimizing business value in any service organization.

Book excerpt: This book is a stepping stone toward solving public sector human capital challenges in Zimbabwe as it equips human capital managers with solutions to key issues in the public sector. In Zimbabwe, the public sector human capital drives the economy as over half of the population access their services through public enterprises. Government is the major agent in economic and infrastructure development as well as the production of goods and services. However, Zimbabwe’s public service is underperforming due to poorly motivated and managed employees who do not respond to the needs of its clients. This is a cause of concern as the public sector human capital is central to the overall performance of the public sector. Often public sector managers and leaders lack advanced, relevant, and dynamic skills and knowledge to deal with human resource challenges within the New Public Management environment. It is critical for the public sector to transform its human resource management to suit twenty-first-century needs. Effective human resource management in the public sector leads to economic growth and therefore the achievement of the Zimbabwe National Vision 2030. Therefore, this book serves as a guide for public sector managers and those directly or indirectly involved in human capital management. It provides in-depth knowledge and guidance in effective human capital management within the context of the public sector in Zimbabwe.
