Included are discussions of the general characteristics of ground waves as well as specific formulas for predicting ground wave field strengths at arbitrary locations from a standard transmitter. These formulas, from the work of Bremmer, apply to either vertical or horizontal polarization, to a smooth spherical earth, and to a wide variety of soil types. A computer program to evaluate the formulas is presented and sample results are given. Although this report concentrates on HF frequencies, many of the results are applicable to a much wider range of frequencies. Atmospheric refraction, which may enhance ground wave propagation, is discussed. Formulas for predicting refraction effects based on atmospheric temperature and humidity as well as temperature and humidity gradients are presented. Propagation over inhomogeneous and irregular terrain is considered. Only limited aspects of such propagation are discussed with an emphasis on irregular terrain. Obstacle gain is covered in some detail. Because of the lack of experimental data for ground wave propagation over irregular terrain at HF frequencies, an experiment is recommended. (Author).

Book excerpt: The primary objective of this study was to obtain theoretical estimates of the effect of inhomogeneities in the earth's surface upon ground-wave propagation along a particular set of land-sea paths.The results were obtained by numerically solving the integral equation [equation],where f* is the attenuation function for the inhomogeneous case, f is the Sommerfeld function, and g is obtained essentially from the spherical Green's function by a steepest-descent type integration. Sharp phase and amplitude changes in the attenuation function occur when crossing an "island" or inhomogeneity in the paths. The greater the difference in conductivity and dielectric constant between the island and the rest of the path, the greater are these changes. Also noted is the "recovery'' or "focusing" effect found in the amplitude and phase. The effect of moving the transmitting antenna across a coastline was also studied and the results were quite similar to the above. Computations were performed for three paths at frequencies of 10, 15, 20, and 25 MHz. The results are displayed in tabular and graphical form. This report is a revised and updated version of an earlier study (Rosich, 1968) which is now out of print.

The method is fast and requires considerably less memory compared to the integral equation methods. The method requires a storage space of order 0(N) and an execution time of order 0(N2). Fields generated by a TEz line source are represented in an integral form in terms of the field over a fiat, constant impedance plane, and the field scattered by the terrain irregularities and inhomogeneities. Accurate expressions are provided for the incident field and the Green's function, whose evaluation is otherwise accomplished by the rather time-consuming Sommerfeld's integrals. Measured equation of invariance is used to terminate the mesh. The sparse matrix generated by the method is inverted using Ricatti transform. Numerical results are presented for the ground wave as well as the sky wave. Comparison is made for known geometries to establish the validity and limitations of the method.

Book excerpt: The effects of irregular, inhomogeneous terrain on ground wave propagation are treated by simplified methods that use the framework of classical ground wave theory. Roughness is introduced in the form of a ground surface impedance. Then, the irregular, inhomogeneous terrain can be taken into account if surface roughness can be described compactly as an impedance. Although the propagated electromagnetic waves arise from vertical antennas as transverse magnetic or TM waves, the irregularities of the ground give rise to transverse electric or TE waves. Losses into the TE propagation mode are considered implicitly in the analysis method for this paper. The theoretical technique is readily reduced to a digital computer program which uses the classical theory approach. This computer program can be used on comparatively small computers especially since it does not require the excessive computation time of the exact methods. The computer program can also calculate the smooth ground phase corrections. A surface wave was excited theoretically at 100 kHz, which may affect the Loran-C, D phase measurements in the presence of certain types of irregular terrain. Such terrain can be characterized by a uniform distribution of bosses of radius near one tenth of a wave length distributed approximately one in every three square kilometers.
