Book Synopsis Spirituality for Youth-Work by : Phil Daughtry
Download or read book Spirituality for Youth-Work written by Phil Daughtry and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses a systemic gap in existing studies on human services and youth work. While the notion of spirituality does make rare appearances in such literature, it is often vaguely defined and underdeveloped both as a concept and as a mode of practice. This ambiguity is symptomatic of the broader shift in the sociological context of Western and global societies that has been referred to variously as post-modern, late-modern and post-secular. From the perspective of the relationship between human development and the spiritual/theological, we live in a “time between times”. We have not yet worked out how to speak of “spirit”; nor how to include its meanings in positive youth intervention, and developments in our language for a public spiritual consciousness remain in a state of cultural flux. This book offers a coherent vocabulary and narrative from which to construct a more explicit and deliberate practice of spiritual care, education and professional identity for youth workers. It speaks directly to youth work practitioners, managers of youth services, those providing youth work education, and anyone with an interest in youth and spirituality research and practice.

Book Synopsis Living, Loving and Loss by : Brad DeFord
Download or read book Living, Loving and Loss written by Brad DeFord and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the unspoken aspects of mourning concerns the ways that loss affects our intimate relationships and our sexual expressiveness. This text opens these subjects for conversation, with the aim of promoting the trust, care, and respect that enable us to be vulnerable. It purposefully covers a range of topics, including: (1) the meaning of intimacy and the significance of sexuality, providing a basis for the use of these terms throughout the book; (2) death, grief, and differences in sexual orientation, including death and intimacy in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community and the losses endured by young people due to gender issues; (3) loss of relationship and restoration of intimacy in families, including pharmacological effects on the grief processes of widowers; grieving a not-so-loved parent; the "layered losses" of infertility and intimacy; and the tolls of war--intimacy and sexuality challenges for soldiers and their families; (4) adjusting to life's losses associated with aging or illness or infirmity, including Alzheimer's and dementia-related illnesses, physical health losses after 50, and intimacy, sex, and hospice--self-determination and dignity at the end of life; and (5) religious bases that have shaped our perspectives for understanding intimacy, sexuality, and healing after loss, and which give us hope--including the spiritual reflections of a rabbi and a Christian voice in defining what is right. Set in a framework that is both psychological and spiritual, the well-researched contributions are intended to acknowledge these experiences both professionally and personally. The book concludes with an extensive bibliography, valuable for research and reference. This book will be of value in undergraduate and graduate courses on thanatology, as well as for anyone interested in knowing more about grief--both those currently bereaved and those who wish to support others in mourning. The contributors appreciate both the importance of our capacities for intimacy and sexuality and our inhibitions and hesitations in giving voice to our needs and concerns, perhaps especially when we are grieving. The information and compassionate understanding they provide encourage us to bridge the gap between the secret and the private and to share what is close to our hearts.

Book Synopsis The American Book of Living and Dying by : Richard F. Groves
Download or read book The American Book of Living and Dying written by Richard F. Groves and published by Celestial Arts. This book was released on 2015-12-16 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most people, the thought of dying or caring for a terminally ill friend or family member raises fears and questions as old as humanity: What is a “good death”? What appropriate preparations should be made? How do we best support our loved ones as life draws to its close? In this nondenominational handbook, Richard F. Groves and Henriette Anne Klauser provide comfort, direction, and hope to the dying and their caregivers through nine archetypal stories that illustrate the most common end-of-life concerns. Drawing from personal experiences, the authors offer invaluable guidance on easing emotional pain and navigating this difficult final passage. With a compelling new preface, this edition also features an overview of the hospice movement; a survey of Celtic, Tibetan, Egyptian, and other historic perspectives on the sacred art of dying; as well as various therapies, techniques, and rituals to alleviate suffering, stimulate reflection, and strengthen interpersonal bonds. The American Book of Living and Dying gives us courage to trust our deepest instincts, and reminds us that by telling the stories of those who have passed, we remember, honor, and continue to learn from them.

Writing passionately about the subject, Father Robert Miller presents this history in an accessible but scholarly fashion. Weinstock claims that his late wife healed his inconsolable grief by making love to him from the Afterlife "JOYride: How My Late Wife Loved Me Back To Life" has won the annual eLit Award-a silver medal for the Best Inspirational / Spiritual Digital Book of 2011. Joy and Jerry were soulmates, in fact, they were literally a "match-made-in heaven." And their love story is one for the ages. When Jerry lost Joy to breast cancer, he was devastated. Then a remarkable thing happened-Joy began communicating with him from the Afterlife. She led him on an incredible journey to heal his grief. And ultimately, like the final scene in the movie, Ghost, Joy found someone-a willing medium-through whom she literally loved him back to life. "Most people will be shocked by our story. I can't blame them. I'd heard of life-after-death, but SEX-after-death? If I hadn't experienced it myself, I wouldn't have believed it either. But this is a true story. It happened to me." - from the Introduction "JOYride: How My Late Wife Loved Me Back To Life" is as fantastic a love story as the hit movie, Ghost, except it's REAL This is a very important book that holds the potential to change the way you view life, death, love and what is possible.
