Book excerpt: Why do plants start to grow when the weather gets warmer in spring? What is the principle of the revival of all things and where does life come from? Why did the human head get bigger and bigger and develop a brilliant brain? How did humans grow into the species that dominates the Earth? Where does human greed come from and what are the means to control it? I believe that this all occurred based on the same principle, and I will explain why in this book. Here, I believe that the background of human brain growth and the source of greed are the same reasons for the birth of all life. I would like to introduce my hypothesis about the secret of human brain growth along with the secret of life. Based on this hypothesis, I would like to explain how life was born on Earth, why human brains became larger and larger, and why humans become greedy and constantly rising in the same context. I am neither a scientist nor an anthropologist, so the hypothesis on which this book is based may be absurd, but rather, I am trying to uncover the secrets of the birth of life and the secrets of the growth of the human brain through wild and bold imagination.

Book Synopsis Jacopo da Varagine's Chronicle of the city of Genoa by :
Download or read book Jacopo da Varagine's Chronicle of the city of Genoa written by and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-15 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first English translation of the Chronicle of the city of Genoa by the thirteenth-century Dominican Jacopo da Varagine, an author best known for his monumental book of saints’ lives, the Golden legend. Jacopo’s Chronicle presents a coherent vision of Genoa’s place in history, the cosmos and Creation as written by the city’s own archbishop – mixing eyewitness accounts with scholarly research about the city’s origins and didactic reflections on the proper conduct of public and private life. Accompanied by an extensive introduction, this complete translation provides a unique perspective on a dynamic medieval city-state from one of its most important officials, broadening the available literature in English on medieval Italian urban life.

Book Synopsis Vergil, Philodemus, and the Augustans by : David Armstrong
Download or read book Vergil, Philodemus, and the Augustans written by David Armstrong and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Epicurean teacher and poet Philodemus of Gadara (c. 110-c. 40/35 BC) exercised significant literary and philosophical influence on Roman writers of the Augustan Age, most notably the poets Vergil and Horace. Yet a modern appreciation for Philodemus' place in Roman intellectual history has had to wait on the decipherment of the charred remains of Philodemus' library, which was buried in Herculaneum by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. As improved texts and translations of Philodemus' writings have become available since the 1970s, scholars have taken a keen interest in his relations with leading Latin poets. The essays in this book, derived from papers presented at the First International Symposium on Philodemus, Vergil, and the Augustans held in 2000, offer a new baseline for understanding the effect of Philodemus and Epicureanism on both the thought and poetic practices of Vergil, Horace, and other Augustan writers. Sixteen leading scholars trace his influence on Vergil's early writings, the Eclogues and the Georgics, and on the Aeneid, as well as on the writings of Horace and others. The volume editors also provide a substantial introduction to Philodemus' philosophical ideas for all classicists seeking a fuller understanding of this pivotal figure.
