Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vishnu Puran is believed to be one of the most important Puranas, if not the most valuable ancient record of the faith called Sanatan Dharma. Its stories reveal about the various exploits of Vishnu incarnations. In rendering this holy text into English, the attention has been paid to put only those details that have certain fundamental truths of life. Hence, in this work those details have been deliberately omitted which may appear rather confusing or uninteresting to the reader not having the initiation in the sacred love. The main thrust of this attempt has been to show a clear glimpse of our ancient hermitage.

Download or read book Skanda Purana written by Bhojraj Dwivedi and published by Diamond Pocket Books Pvt Ltd. This book was released on 2016-10-10 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Puranas are not merely history books in the accepted sense of the term but they do give a mine of information about the ancient life or the time when our values were taking roots. Since they record not only history and geography, but also the essence of our jurisprudence and subjects of practical value and its relevance, it perhaps never wanes. In order to help the gen-next know and appreciate the span of our achievement, it is essential for it to have a comprehensive version of our Puranas. The language and style of narration have been kept as near to the modern parlance so as to help the reader get the crux of the text. This Skanda Purana is an important to me of the series as it contains varied descriptions of our ancient heritage. Curiously enough, the now widely popular story: the ‘Satyanarayan Katha’ owes its origin to this very Purana. It is hoped our discerning readers would accord a warm welcome to Skanda Purana as they did to the earlier Puranas of the present series. We would welcome any suggestion from our readers to make the present series more relevant and meaningful.

Download or read book Harivamsha written by Bibek Debroy and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gorgeous, lucid rendering of the majestic conclusion to the Mahabharata As an epilogue to the greatest epic of all time, the Harivamsha further elaborates on the myriad conflicts of dharma and the struggle between good and evil. Stories abound—from the cosmogony of the universe to the legends of the solar and lunar dynasties and even a foreshadowing of kali yuga in the future. At the centre of all these magnificent tales is the mercurial figure of Krishna, whose miraculous life and wondrous exploits are recounted with vivid detail. In offering a glimpse into Krishna’s life—as a mischievous child, as an enchanting lover, as a discerning prince—this luminous text sheds light on many questions left unanswered in the Mahabharata. Brimming with battles and miracles, wisdom and heroics, philosophical insight and psychological acuity, Bibek Debroy’s splendid translation of the Harivamsha is absolutely essential reading for all those who love the Mahabharata.
Book Synopsis Evil in the Mahabharata by : Meena Arora Nayak
Download or read book Evil in the Mahabharata written by Meena Arora Nayak and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good and evil, loyalty and treachery, faith and doubt, honour and ignominy—the Mahabharata has served as a primer for codes of conduct to generations of Hindus. Over time, the epic has also fascinated those who love a tale well told. In its telling, however, the story has lost much of its richness and nuance, and the characters have become one-dimensional cut-outs—either starkly good or irredeemably evil. In this reinterpretation, Meena Arora Nayak analyses how the values espoused in the Mahabharata came to be distorted into meagre archetypes, creating customary laws that injure society even today.

Book Synopsis The Myths of Narasiṁha and Vāmana by : Deborah A. Soifer
Download or read book The Myths of Narasiṁha and Vāmana written by Deborah A. Soifer and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1991-11-08 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sanskrit Puranas and epics are replete with stories of the avatars, incarnations of the god Visnu in various forms to rid the universe of malevolent forces and to restore the proper cosmic balance. As Narasimha, half-man half-lion, Visnu finds a loophole in the pact of invulnerability the demon Hiranaipu has received from god Brahma, and rends the demon apart with his claws. As the brahmin dwarf, Vamana, Visnu deceives the demon Bali with his diminutive appearance and thwarts Bali's attempt to gain universal sovereignty. After carefully analyzing the myths of Vamana and Narasimha, Deborah Soifer grounds her study in the textual history of each avatar and its myth, in their religious contexts, and in the intricate cosmology of the classical period of Hinduism. Contrasting the bestial persona of Narasimha with Vamana's priestly appearance and his associations with early cosmologic themes, she finds complementarity and significance in this pair as they are viewed in the larger context of periodic cosmic destructions and recreations. While focusing primarily on these two mythological figures, Soifer's work explores the relationship between dharma and the 'devious' acts of gods; the interplay between cosmic and 'sociocosmic' levels of reality; and the relationship between cosmology, theology, and soteriology in a religious worldview.

Download or read book Bali written by T. N. Padmavati and published by Bharatha Samskruthi Prakashana. This book was released on 2019-03-02 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bali, the king of Asuras, was Bhakta Prahlada’s grandson and Virochana’s son. Devendra took away all his wealth and killed him but Shukracharya brought him back to life with the help of Sanjeevani Vidya. Thus, Bali became Sukracharya’s disciple and offered all his wealth to his preceptor. Bali wanted to make heaven a part of his kingdom and hence, performed a yaga and entered Amaravathi, Devendra’s capital. All the devas left swargaloka on the advice of Brihaspathi as none could face the valour of Bali. Bali now ruled over his vast kingdom of the three worlds. The devas approached Lord Vishnu, who was born as Vamana, and asked him to bring round Bali and return to them all that they had lost. Vamana came to Bali as a young brahmin and impressed the king with his knowledge so much that Bali offered him all that he had. Vamana, who had gone there with a purpose, declined the offer saying that he was interested in establishing a yagashala in memory of his preceptor for which he needed land measuring just three footsteps. Sukracharya warned the king not to give the young Brahmin anything as he was none other than Lord Vishnu in disguise. Instead of taking his preceptor’s advice, Bali spoke at length about how he had taken yagnadeeksha which meant that he couldn’t refuse anything to someone who had asked for something. Thus Vamana took his famous three steps and in an instant, deprived Bali of all that he had. Bali’s followers were so enraged that they waged a bloody battle in which thousands were killed. Bali, on the other hand, advised them to stop fighting and become good. Only then could they hope to get back all that they had lost. The Lord was impressed and made Bali the king of the nether world. Bali thus stood tall by not buckling down to any pressure, be it giving up truth, listening to others’ advice or even to his preceptor’s curse or advice. Download or read book Krishna Key written by Ashwin Sanghi and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2022-06-24 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five thousand years ago, there came to earth a magical being called Krishna, who brought about innumerable miracles for the good of mankind. Humanity despaired of its fate if the Blue God were to die but was reassured that he would return in a fresh avatar when needed in the eventual Dark Age-the Kaliyug. In modern times, a poor little rich boy grows up believing that he is that final avatar. Only, he is a serial killer. In this heart-stopping tale, the arrival of a murderer who executes his gruesome and brilliantly thought-out schemes in the name of God is the first clue to a sinister conspiracy to expose an ancient secret-Krishna's priceless legacy to mankind. Historian Ravi Mohan Saini must breathlessly dash from the submerged remains of Dwarka and the mysterious lingam of Somnath to the icy heights of Mount Kailash, in a quest to discover the cryptic location of Krishna's most prized possession. From the sand-washed ruins of Kalibangan to a Vrindavan temple destroyed by Aurangzeb, Saini must also delve into antiquity to prevent a gross miscarriage of justice. Ashwin Sanghi brings you yet another exhaustively researched whopper of a plot, while providing an incredible alternative interpretation of the Vedic Age that will be relished by conspiracy buffs and thriller-addicts alike.
