Book excerpt: Memories flood my mind as I reminisce how my journey has been a lifetime of happenings that speak to my soul with lessons that can be applied to our daily lives. These memories are conjured up at odd and, sometimes, inconvenient times. As I sat in church last Sunday and the pastor began his message, my mind captured a thought of bygone days that spoke loud and clear to my mind, and I scrambled in my bag for a pen and paper to put my thoughts down. Brother Tim must have thought he had really said something profound, and he did, but I did not write that down. It is my hope that all who read my memories and the lessons that I glean from them will take them to heart and identify with them and feel happiness, insight, and perhaps laughter as they share my memories and truths.

It introduces some new main characters to the readerYa Ya, Carolyn, Terry, Mindy, Peter, Mark, and their classmates at school in suburban Philadelphia in the 1960s. It tells the story of how my brothers and I found out our mother had MS and how we dealt with it during our school years and also later in life. This book is an interactive one and also teaches how to put together a science fair for an elementary school. This book also teaches some important family values both in the 1960s and today. I hope all my readers enjoy this book as much as I did writing it. N. K. Beckley

Book excerpt: Reading Ericka's Story was one of the hardest things I have ever done. There were times when I had to stop reading, because I could not stop crying. I don't know if it was my own pain or the pain I felt for you, Dominic and Racquel. Reading the book helped me understand why it was so difficult for you to write. The purpose of the book is compelling. In my view, it admonishes parents who have children with life threatening diseases to bond with family and others in their social networks and especially God to help them through all of the uncertainty and pain that they will experience. The book does a wonderful job of capturing the feelings of all of the people in your lives and the roles they played in this drama. It is a premier for all parents with children diagnosed with terminal diseases. Frank Lomax III Ericka's Grandpa Minister Kelley Denise Gulley, MBA is a member of World Conquerors Church in Oakland, California, where she leads the Prayer Warriors Ministry and serves on the Vision in Action Team which works to implement Pastoral initiatives. She is a dynamic facilitator, speaker and teacher who counts it a privilege to have worked in and ministered to people living in low income communities of color across the country and in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Kelley's purpose in life is to bless others. She believes that she has been given gifts, abilities and experiences so that she can be used by God as a transfer point for these gifts to be deposited in the people who cross her path. Kelley is married to her high school sweetheart, Dominic. They have two children Racquel and Dominic, Jr. who you will learn more about in Ericka's Story.

Did your mom preside—and how did you know it was her domain? Mom and Me in the Kitchen is filled with choice stories from bestselling cookbook author, Phyllis Pellman Good, along with her selection of stories and memories from the thousands of followers of the Fix-It and Forget-It.com blog and Facebook page. What happened to picky eaters. Did everyone sit down and eat together? What we talked about. Kitchen accidents and embarrassing moments. Was Mom home? Who was involved. What happened. A special meal that Mom made for me. What was on the menu. Why I'll never forget it. How I learned to cook. It was all because of Mom. Or, it was all because Mom wasn't there. The first meal I made. What I learned never to do again. If I could go back to one time in the kitchen with Mom while I was growing up … What happened. Why that time still stands out to me. Good chance you'll laugh and cry. Guaranteed that you'll revisit your own growing-up kitchen and think about life with your kids in the kitchen. Book Synopsis Analecta by : Jim Whiting

Book excerpt: If you're looking for a trite phrase to describe the essence of this book, try "A trip down memory lane." It might be as apt as any. And Jim Whiting's Analecta fits that mold. His bittersweet telling of a childhood filled with sometimes warm and fuzzy anecdotes may trigger fond memories of your own younger days. The more unpleasant aspects of growing up are also visited here and these tales will have you grateful that your experiences--perhaps similar--are in the past . . . only to be remembered, sometimes painfully. Analecta begins at a critical point in the author's life. He is on the final lap of a solo car journey from upstate New York to Southern California. Six days ago he had left a life that had become routine, comfortable, and very much a part of himself-- in retrospect, perhaps too much so. He would, in a matter of hours be reunited with his wife, who had taken a job a month prior, in Solana Beach. In New York State they had left behind four of five of their grown children and five grandchildren. He also left behind almost twenty-nine years in broadcasting and an overlapping career in cartooning-that's his resume. Flashbacks to his preteen years reveal a kid who shows very early entrepreneurial leanings. He has a tendency to want to "belong" but he has difficulty being at ease in belonging. Whiting touches on the uneasy relationship with his older brother (is that so different from many siblings have?) There are interludes about a twelve-year-old kid getting lost in on his first visit to New York City; a high school girl friend; Navy boot camp; magic in New Orleans; personalities in Radio; poems (some very good-- some not so-- but fun); observations made in classrooms, business offices, and on the tennis court. Don't look for gossip, accusations, or grievances; none of them are in this book. It's definitely not a downer. Returning to Mell Lazarus's Introduction for a final note: "It's a great book! If you're like me, you'll love it. If you're not like me, you'll love it."

Through his warm, rich, engaging, and humorous style, readers meet and get to know unforgettable characters like The Mastermind, Jerry Yellsalot, and Claude Hopper as they explore and relive hilarious life-altering events told through the eyes of the boy who actually lived them. Hilarious and thought provoking, stories like Fudge? What Fudge?, The Stagecoach, Setting Pins, and Trust Me, This Wont Hurt, lead the reader through the maze we call childhood and the pattern-maker's mold of our teen years through which the die is made and cast that shapes us into the adults we become. Travel back now to a time not so long ago when the world seemed to spin a little slower and life was a lot simpler; a time when dreams were dreamed and adventures were lived and a boy grew into a man.

Book excerpt: An instant New York Times, Washington Post, and USA TODAY bestseller—based on the true story of the heroic librarians at the American Library in Paris during World War II—The Paris Library is a moving and unforgettable “ode to the importance of libraries, books, and the human connections we find within both” (Kristin Harmel, New York Times bestselling author). Paris, 1939: Young and ambitious Odile Souchet seems to have the perfect life with her handsome police officer beau and a dream job at the American Library in Paris. When the Nazis march into the city, Odile stands to lose everything she holds dear, including her beloved library. Together with her fellow librarians, Odile joins the Resistance with the best weapons she has: books. But when the war finally ends, instead of freedom, Odile tastes the bitter sting of unspeakable betrayal. Montana, 1983: Lily is a lonely teenager looking for adventure in small-town Montana. Her interest is piqued by her solitary, elderly neighbor. As Lily uncovers more about her neighbor’s mysterious past, she finds that they share a love of language, the same longings, and the same intense jealousy, never suspecting that a dark secret from the past connects them. “A love letter to Paris, the power of books, and the beauty of intergenerational friendship” (Booklist), The Paris Library shows that extraordinary heroism can sometimes be found in the quietest places.
