Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work started nearly 2,000 years ago when the Holy Spirit inspired four different individuals to write about the life of Jesus Christ, addressing four different audiences for four different purposes. These four books are Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The first three books, referred to as the synoptic gospels, tell what Christ did, and the fourth tells about who He is. When these four reports are combined into one flowing narrative a more complete picture is formed. Translated directly from Greek, this combined account includes every chapter and verse, with nothing added, and nothing left out. Jesus Christ the Greatest Life incorporates maps, graphics, timelines, and editorial comments. It also includes all other recorded words of Jesus from Acts, 1 Corinthians, and Revelation. Jesus Christ the Greatest Life together with footnotes and illustrations, will help you visualize the chronological life of Jesus Christ. Over 500,000 copies are in use today.

Book excerpt: The Story, An Interwoven Gospel is the complete story of the life of Jesus Christ as written by Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The format, however, is truly unique in several ways. The contents are 100 percent scripture, with no author commentaries or storytelling. On the back cover, Mr. Fincher makes it clear that he has only woven the scriptures together, and that God is the author. The Story is chronologically ordered beginning with the birth of Jesus and ending with His ascension to Heaven. The most unique feature is the text itself. A different color is used for the writings of each of the four Gospels, and then woven together to form a complete, smooth-flowing story. The reader is easily able to identify the contributions and perspectives of each writer. Parallel and harmony Gospels provide an excellent side-by-side comparison, but they are not in story form. The Story, An Interwoven Gospel is a wonderful, easy, and enjoyable way to learn about, study, and/or teach the life of Jesus Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the Gospels and what does it mean to read them? Warren Carter leads the beginning student in an inductive exploration of the New Testament Gospels, asking about their genre, the view that they were written by eyewitnesses, the early church traditions about them, and how they employ Hellenistic biography. He then examines the distinctive voice of each Gospel, describing the “tale about Jesus” each writer tells, then presenting likely views regarding the circumstances in which they were written, giving particular attention to often overlooked aspects of the Roman imperial setting. A sociohistorical approach suggests that Mark addressed difficult circumstances in imperial Rome; redaction criticism shows that Matthew edited traditions to help define identity in competition with synagogue communities in response to a fresh assertion of Roman power; a literary-thematic approach shows that Luke offers assurance in a context of uncertainty; an intertextual approach shows how John used Wisdom traditions to present Jesus as the definitive revealer of God’s presence to answer an ancient quest for divine knowledge. A concluding chapter addresses how the Gospels inform and shape our understanding of Jesus of Nazareth. Maps, images, sidebars, and questions for reflection add value to this student-friendly text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The person and work of Jesus Christ is at the heart of Christianity. So we would expect the Christian Scriptures to include an account of Jesus' life. But why do we have four - the Gospels According to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John? Isn't this redundant? Wouldn't one be enough? On the contrary, our knowledge of Jesus Christ would be incomplete if we had only one Gospel. Or even if we had three Gospels but were missing one. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John each told the story from a different perspective, because each had a different audience in mind. We tend to blur these four distinctive portraits of Jesus together. But knowing how an act or saying of Jesus fits in with each author's perspective can greatly enhance our understanding of its meaning. In this volume, we examine how each Gospel differs from the others, and numerous detailed studies. This volume includes 95 articles about the four Gospels collected from Christian Odyssey magazine and other publications of Grace Communion International. Illustrations by Ken Tunell. The articles were written over a span of 20 years - from the 1990s to 2013. They have been edited for this collection.

Book excerpt: If asked how Matthew’s Gospel differs from Luke’s, or what aspects of Jesus’ personhood and ministry the Gospel of Mark focuses on compared to those of John, how would you answer? In Discovering Jesus, T. D. Alexander sets out to help readers understand how each Gospel account is uniquely written and why all four are important for having a rich picture of the person of Jesus Christ. Alexander guides readers to see how the Gospels display Jesus as the Son of David who establishes the kingdom of God, the Son of God who suffers to ransom others, the Savior of the world who seeks the lost, and the Lamb of God who brings eternal life through a new exodus. Each chapter ends with discussion questions for individual or group study.

Book excerpt: Few Anglican theologians today are as conversant about the reality and meaning of the Incarnation in the lives of ordinary women and men as Herbert O'Driscoll. In his newest book, O'Driscoll helps us find the presence of Christ in those places we would rather avoid: the sorrows, the heartbreaks, and the challenges of everyday living. O'Driscoll argues that in the details of Jesus' life on earth lie the source of his very real presence in our lives today. Following the stories in the Gospels, we find Jesus in relationship with those around him. In his joys and sorrows, we can see reflected our own experiences, and take strength in the knowledge that Jesus has walked this way before us, and indeed, is walking with us now. “Jesus' choices, like ours, depend for their success on the vagaries of human nature in those whom he has chosen. There are no simple categories such as bad and good, weak and strong, wise and foolish in this circle around Jesus. In each of them, showing now an eager and dedicated face, all these things are woven together.” —from God with Us

Book excerpt: The four Gospels, each telling in its own way the story of the Life of Jesus, are the rich heritage of Christians. No one of the Gospels could be spared. But in reading any one of the four we miss some of the familiar words and incidents we love. Almost from the days of the Apostles there have been attempts to unite the Gospels in a single narrative. The editors of this little book have undertaken to prepare an interwoven story of the Life of Jesus from the four Gospels for popular reading. A booklet that may be carried in the pocket, and may be sold, in paper binding, for ten cents, has been their ambition. They have been led to this undertaking by the large demand for copies of their previous booklet, "His Last Week," which comprises the last third of this volume, whose use at Easter time has brought them many requests for the complete Gospel story, interwoven in the same manner.

Book excerpt: In this highly readable introduction to the Gospels, Edward Adams demonstrates how the four canonical Gospels function separatelyâ€"as unique accounts of Jesus' lifeâ€"and as narrative renditions of a shared story: the Fourfold Gospel. Building on the premise that the Gospels are ancient biographies or "lives of Jesus," Adams examines parallel Gospel passages, highlighting the similarities and differences between them. He begins by approaching the four Gospels generally, then looks at each of them individually, and finally considers six key Gospel passages to further explore the unity and plurality of the Gospels in a more focused way. Adams's lucid prose helps to make this text ideal for beginning students of the Gospels.

Book excerpt: Endorsed By: Julie B. Beck, Fifteenth Relief Society General President John Bytheway, Author / Popular Speaker / University Instructor Orson Scott Card, Award Winning Author, Critic, Public Speaker, Essayist and Columnist Thomas R. Valletta PhD, general editor for "The Book of Mormon, New Testament, Old Testament, Church History and Great American Documents for Latter-Day Saint Families. John A. Peterson PhD, Institutes of Religion Instructor This work represents an attempt to take the four gospel sketches and combine them into a plausible reconstruction of a complete life and ministry of the Savior in a single narrative format. It seemed appropriate to incorporate additional credible information of the Savior's life, including: excerpts from the Joseph Smith Translation, pertinent Greek translations, the scriptures of the restoration, historical, cultural and archeological discoveries, as well as prophetic commentary. It is hoped that these additional resources will bring depth, color, and clarity to this reconstructive portrait. I acknowledge that what I have done with this work is very different from conventional approaches but it is not entirely unique and not without precedent. In c. 160-175 A.D. an Assyrian born scholar and theologian named Tatian, a pupil of Justin Martyr, wrote his famous Diatessaron, combining the four gospels into a single narrative, versions of which persisted through to the 1300's as authoritative. It is widely held that Tatian undertook his work as an apologist in an effort to eliminate the discrepancies found between the gospel accounts. Unlike the motives ascribed to Tatian, I harbor no illusions of replacing or superseding the original gospel accounts as an apologist. While this work draws primarily from scripture, I do not consider it an extension of the scriptural cannon. In my view, it is a personal study aid only. The four Gospels will always stand as independent witnesses, each with a unique perspective which reveal insights only accessible by maintaining their integrity. It is hoped that this work will encourage the reader to undertake an in-depth study of the individual gospels or, having already done so, provide a synthetic perspective which also reveals unique insights. At the urging of family and friends, I offer this interpretation of the mortal life and ministry of Jesus Christ. It represents physical evidence for my children and subsequent posterity of my love for the Lord and His prophets. I hope it will be meaningful to them and to you as well. This book is neither definitive nor authoritative; it has been compiled with the best information I was aware of at the time, and is subject to revision. May we be so blessed as to come to know the Lord Jesus Christ more fully until such time as "[we] shall know even as also [we are] known (1 Cor. 13:12)." John B. Weaver 9/2/15
