Book excerpt: Marva Whitney's warts and all autobiography is told in the same manner as the robust singing-style that she patented - it's raw, unbridled, intense and profoundly passionate. The late Kansas City funk and soul singer takes no prisoners in a compellingly candid memoir that blends pathos with humour and vividly recalls her rise to fame in James Brown's legendary revue in the late 1960s. A revealing expose of Brown's tyrannical regime, it also chronicles Marva's life either side of her time with the 'Godfather of Soul' and includes recollections from funk legends Bootsy Collins, Pee Wee Ellis and Fred Wesley.

Book excerpt: Baptized 'Soul Sister Number One' by her producer and mentor James Brown, Kansas City funk siren Marva Whitney was on the cusp of stardom in the late 1960s. During that time she scored three US R&B hit singles, released two albums, picked up a Golden Mike Award and was voted second in Record World magazine's readers' poll for the Most Promising Female R&B Vocalist of 1969. She also made numerous appearances on US television but just as her star seemed to be in the ascendant, Whitney's career took a spectacular turn for the worse after personal problems forced her to quit the James Brown organization in early 1970. She then spent 35 years in the wilderness before successfully reviving her career in 2005. In her absorbing and sometimes shockingly frank memoir, God, The Devil & James Brown, Marva Whitney - who died in 2012 at the age of 68 - tells her story with an unflinching, tell-it-like-it-is directness. Her detailed account of life with James Brown is particularly disturbing but leavened with a laugh-out-loud humor that makes Marva Whitney's autobiography a compelling page-turner. "(An) eye-opening life-story. Whitney is an engaging raconteur ... she recalls her struggles and triumphs vividly, with humility and humour." Terry Staunton, Record Collector "Her tenure with 'The Godfather' is remarkably honest and forthright; sometimes unbelievable even. After reading this, and her candid remarks about her life - particularly the period spent with James Brown - I feel I know her like a friend... it's a cracking read!" Sharon Davis, SoulMusic.com

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of James Brown: With Obituary Notices and Tributes of Respect From Public Bodies The late James Brown was a man so much respected by the community, and so much be loved by his friends, that after the first sharp sense of the bereavement occasioned by his death had passed away, there was a general wish ex pressed that some memorial of him might be prepared - not for the public, but for those who honored and loved him - which should contain a sketch of his life and a selection from the va rious tributes and expressions which were called forth at the time of his death. To meet this wish, this volume has been prepared; and it is commended by the editor to the friends of its lamented subject, in the assurance that they will feel that it has been prepared in the spirit of. Book excerpt: Foregrounding the funk style "invented" by legendary musician James Brown, this study concerns itself with how the experience of time in popular music is reflective of broader social, political or, more simply, existential, conditions. In short, how James Brown's funk might be understood as the musical expression of a particular negotiation of time by a "minor" culture, (where this notion of a "minor" culture is derived from the work of the philosophers Deleuze and Guattari). That funk would emerge in the mid-1960s, at the very apex of the civil-rights movement, was surely no coincidence, and the book details how Brown's music would render musical the broader existential changes taking place within the African-American community at a crucial political time. This journey through funk's mode of constitution is informed by the philosophical concerns of Gilles Deleuze's Cinema books, which provide a set of conceptual tools that illustrate how Brown's music would impel popular music's compositional shift from a teleological depiction of movement through time (the "movement-image") to funk's more direct experience of the temporal (the "time-image"). The assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, and the "post-soul" climate that transpired, are used as supporting evidence of how funk's relative temporal indeterminacy begins to take precedence over the more teleological "soul" narratives which preceded them. Based on this evidence, it is argued that Brown's music demonstrates a most compelling example of how popular music's temporal mode of constitution might reflect, aesthetically, the broader political and existential circumstances of its emergence, and how this affective relationship to composition made Brown one of the greatest musical innovators of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: At the one-year anniversary of his death, legendary musician Prince's first wife shares a uniquely intimate, candid, and revelatory look inside the personal and professional life of one of the world's most beloved icons. In The Most Beautiful, a title inspired by the hit song Prince wrote about their legendary love story, Mayte Garcia for the first time shares the deeply personal story of their relationship and offers a singular perspective on the music icon and their world together: from their unconventional meeting backstage at a concert (and the long-distance romance that followed), to their fairy-tale wedding (and their groundbreaking artistic partnership), to the devastating losses that ultimately dissolved their romantic relationship for good. Throughout it all, they shared a bond more intimate than any other in Prince's life. No one else can tell this story or can provide a deeper, more nuanced portrait of Prince -- both the famously private man and the pioneering, beloved artist -- than Mayte, his partner during some of the most pivotal personal and professional years of his career. The Most Beautiful is a book that will be returned to for decades, as Prince's music lives on with generations to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The very strange but nevertheless true story of the dark underbelly of a 1960s hippie utopia. Laurel Canyon in the 1960s and early 1970s was a magical place where a dizzying array of musical artists congregated to create much of the music that provided the soundtrack to those turbulent times. Members of bands like the Byrds, the Doors, Buffalo Springfield, the Monkees, the Beach Boys, the Turtles, the Eagles, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention, Steppenwolf, CSN, Three Dog Night and Love, along with such singer/songwriters as Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, James Taylor and Carole King, lived together and jammed together in the bucolic community nestled in the Hollywood Hills. But there was a dark side to that scene as well. Many didn’t make it out alive, and many of those deaths remain shrouded in mystery to this day. Far more integrated into the scene than most would like to admit was a guy by the name of Charles Manson, along with his murderous entourage. Also floating about the periphery were various political operatives, up-and-coming politicians and intelligence personnel – the same sort of people who gave birth to many of the rock stars populating the canyon. And all the canyon’s colorful characters – rock stars, hippies, murderers and politicos – happily coexisted alongside a covert military installation.
