Book excerpt: [Also marketed as GOD, BOMBS & VIET NAM...]GOD, BOMBS, SEX & NAM - 50th Anniversary Edition 1967-2017. In addition to the original text, this edition contains 2 stories of the Vietnam Air War written by Navy Pilot CDR Harry B. Sampson, recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross for his actions above and beyond the call of duty over North Vietnam in 1967. The original text remains a raw, unrepentant account of the war by the 20-year-old author who calls it as he sees it from the O-2 and flight-deck levels of aircraft carrier USS Oriskany (CVA-34). He describes participation in the U.S. Navy's implementation of President Johnson's OPERATION ROLLING THUNDER, a massive three year bombardment of North Vietnam that ultimately results in the demise of an estimated 100,000 civilians. The fast-paced, death-dealing action is guaranteed to rivet the attention of any aviation war buff. All hands will enjoy an abundance of salty humor on-board the ship and in Asian ports of call, especially the notorious Olongapo City.During the course of his squadron's eight-month tour, Photo Recon Tech MacLennon obediently participates in the slaughter of Vietnamese soldiers and civilians. In his daily log, Mac tends to vacillate between militant and pacifist as he searches for a personal identify he can live with. It's a struggle not uncommon to young men then and today... a struggle that goes largely unnoticed in the heat of action but comes to the fore during his late-night discussions with an insightful helicopter Search & Rescue Pilot, Lieutenant Michael Goldberg. In GBS&N, MacLennon's compassion for the victimized people of Southeast Asia offers insight to challenges faced by all people who struggle to survive in a world where distant political ideologues often determine their fate. Additionally, Mac's diary takes occasional flashbacks to his formative years in the 1950's and 60's.Any well-rounded individual who enjoys a good read on significant military history and philosophical themes will want to add GOD, BOMBS, SEX & NAM to his or her personal library. Photo collages in the book were created by the author from 31 individual photo stills (11 of them new to this edition); the front & back covers of the book are color composites of 5 individual photos.NOTE: Text of the original 2013 release was revised for accuracy after conferring with the squadron's three living pilots (in 2016. all retired US Navy Commanders) and with the leading aviation photo division Chief Petty Officer. All four were highly significant to this 1967 assignment. See credits on publisher page.BE FOREWARNED: This book contains subject matter and language not recommended for easily-offended readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writings in this book represent one man's half century of wrestling with angels & tricksters in diverse circumstance and influences of the times. It is divided into three sectors, the first being, "God, Love, Peace & Music," a sequel to Gerald MacLennon's five-star "God, Bombs, Sex & Nam." This anthology covers the author's return home from military service in Vietnam, building a new life amid the zeitgeist of anti-war sentiment, assassinations, space travel and other technological triumphs... of music festivals and unprecedented cultural change. The main time period for "God, Love, Peace & Music," is 1968 to 1975 - the year U.S. involvement in Vietnam ended. In similar manner, MacLennon's "Sector 2 Poetry" and "Sector 3 Prose," represent the diversity of events and passages in his life from ages 15 through 69. Readers who have experienced great challenges in life - and who hasn't! - will relate to the author's ongoing combat with Angels of Darkness and, conversely, those golden moments when Angels of Light intervene to brighten our lives. Because of diminishing health, the author asked friends and family for personal prayers, good vibes and "focused intentions" in order that he be given just a little more time to properly edit, revise and add new material to "Wrestling with Angels: An Anthology...REVISED." The supplications were heard. That's why this newly revised imprint exists.

Book excerpt: For anyone who has ever felt like they don't belong, Sigh, Gone shares an irreverent, funny, and moving tale of displacement and assimilation woven together with poignant themes from beloved works of classic literature. In 1975, during the fall of Saigon, Phuc Tran immigrates to America along with his family. By sheer chance they land in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, a small town where the Trans struggle to assimilate into their new life. In this coming-of-age memoir told through the themes of great books such as The Metamorphosis, The Scarlet Letter, The Iliad, and more, Tran navigates the push and pull of finding and accepting himself despite the challenges of immigration, feelings of isolation, and teenage rebellion, all while attempting to meet the rigid expectations set by his immigrant parents. Appealing to fans of coming-of-age memoirs such as Fresh Off the Boat, Running with Scissors, or tales of assimilation like Viet Thanh Nguyen's The Displaced and The Refugees, Sigh, Gone explores one man’s bewildering experiences of abuse, racism, and tragedy and reveals redemption and connection in books and punk rock. Against the hairspray-and-synthesizer backdrop of the ‘80s, he finds solace and kinship in the wisdom of classic literature, and in the subculture of punk rock, he finds affirmation and echoes of his disaffection. In his journey for self-discovery Tran ultimately finds refuge and inspiration in the art that shapes—and ultimately saves—him.

Book excerpt: Women are rarely if ever mentioned in commentaries upon Australian Christianity and spirituality. Only exceptional women are recognized as authorities on religious matters. Why is this so? Does it matter? Don't people from the same religious tradition share similar experiences of the divine, regardless of their gender? Rewriting God asks whether women have been writing about the divine and whether their insights are different from those contained in malestream accounts of Australian Christianity and spirituality. An analysis of the writings of popular theologians and religious commentators over the last twenty years suggests that the most popular form of spirituality among Australian theologians is Desert Spirituality. An analysis of women's autobiographical writings, however, suggests that the desert is irrelevant to many women's spiritual experiences. This book, through a close investigation of the fictions of Thea Astley, Elizabeth Jolley and Barbara Hanrahan, attempts to posit alternative forms of women's spirituality and to signal ways in which this spirituality is already being expressed. From the evidence gathered here, it becomes obvious that traditional expressions of Australian Christianity and spirituality are gender-specific and that they have functioned to deny women's religious experiences and to silence their claims to equality in the sight and service of the divine. It becomes obvious, too, that women have been developing their own forms of religious expression and that these may be expected to supplant gradually withering images of Desert Spirituality. Whether this new imagery will strengthen Australian Christianity or whether it merely marks a decline in the authority of Christianity remains a moot point.

Book excerpt: Park asserts that one cannot grasp the full meaning of the sin and guilt of sinners until one has looked at the Korean concept of han--the relational consequence of sin--and shame of their victims. To reconcile with God and with other humans, one's sin must be repented, guilt must be forgiven, the han of those who have been wronged must be healed, and the shame which results from that wrong must be erased.

Suddenly I felt an overwhelming feeling, a special closeness with the God of Creation. I tried to analyze this feeling and thought it must be a second work of grace I had heard about. I called this experience divine unity. As I spoke with mature believers, I discovered they too had experienced this feeling; it was called peace. I had experienced times of peace, but not this kind of peace. This peace was supernatural. I was later to learn this was Shalom, or supernatural peace. If there were no heaven, this peace would be reward enough, in and of itself. It is my prayer that the readers of this book will come to faith, believe in God, and experience this divine peace.

Book excerpt: A highly entertaining novel set in North London, where the Greek gods have been living in obscurity since the seventeenth century. Being immortal isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Life’s hard for a Greek god in the twenty-first century: nobody believes in you any more, even your own family doesn’t respect you, and you’re stuck in a dilapidated hovel in North London with too many siblings and not enough hot water. But for Artemis (goddess of hunting, professional dog walker), Aphrodite (goddess of beauty, telephone sex operator) and Apollo (god of the sun, TV psychic) there’s no way out... until a meek cleaner and her would-be boyfriend come into their lives and turn the world upside down. Gods Behaving Badly is that rare thing, a charming, funny, utterly original novel that satisfies the head and the heart.
