Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Game Day and God: Football, Faith, and Politics in the American South takes seriously the often-stated assertion that college football in the South is a religion. To this end, Eric Bain-Selbo draws upon a wide range of theoretical approaches in religious studies and cultural criticism. He also relies upon field research on several campuses in the Southeastern Conference where he interviewed fans and experienced "game day." Consequently, the author is able to make the case that college football does function religiously for many people in the South. In addition, the author introduces key concepts and theories of religion and culture to a general audience Game Day and God also recounts the role that college football has played in Southern history and culture. Going back as far as the Civil War, the work explains the cultural meaning of college football in the South, delivering a much-needed critical perspective to the subject Scholars of religion will find the work a compelling extension of key concepts and theories to an otherwise "secular" activity. Scholars of American culture and sports will find the work to be an interesting case study, one that-unlike much work in the area-focuses our attention on the religious dimension of the phenomenon of sport in American culture. And general readers will find that college football or any sport can be much more than they imagined as well as discover important theories with which to make sense of the complexity of our daily lives Book jacket.

Book excerpt: Using humor and insight, Dr. Holdsambeck describes the life of a man rearing daughters. Each chapter has a unique theme that draws from either simple observations ("they smell babies") or years of clinical experience ("special moms"). The themes were designed to highlight how differently some dads and their daughters experience the world. Dr. Holdsambeck is a psychologist and a board certified behavior analyst. He has been a tenured instructor of psychology and a clinician for decades. He has been an invited speaker at many symposiums and scientific conferences. Most importantly however, he is a father of three girls. Anyone who has had the task of getting young ladies off to school ("graduating magna comb loudly") or coaching them in adolescence ("devine cat herding") will instantly relate to those chapters. Some of the chapters tackle serious subjects like our relationship with money or raising children with special needs but most were selected simply to amuse. Enjoy!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turning the Tide is an institutional and cultural history of a dramatic decade of change at the University of Alabama set against the backdrop of desegregation, the continuing civil rights struggle, and the growing antiwar movement. This book documents the period when a handful of University of Alabama student activists formed an alliance with President Frank A. Rose, his staff, and a small group of progressive-minded professors in order to transform the university during a time of social and political turmoil. Together they engaged in a struggle against Governor George Wallace and a state legislature that reflected the worst aspects of racism in a state where the passage of civil rights legislation in 1964 and 1965 did little to reduce segregation and much to inflame the fears and passions of many white Alabamians. Earl H. Tilford details the origins of the student movement from within the Student Government Association, whose leaders included Ralph Knowles and future governor Don Siegelman, among others; the participation of key members of “The Machine,” the political faction made up of the powerful fraternities and sororities on campus; and the efforts of more radical non-Greek students like Jack Drake, Ed Still, and Sondra Nesmith. Tilford also details the political maneuverings that drove the cause of social change through multiple administrations at the university. Turning the Tide highlights the contributions of university presidents Frank A. Rose and David Mathews, as well as administrators like the dean of men John L. Blackburn, who supported the student leaders but also encouraged them to work within the system rather than against it. Based on archival research, interviews with many of the principal participants, and the author’s personal experiences, Tilford’s Turning the Tide is a compelling portrait of a university in transition during the turbulence surrounding the civil rights and anti-war movements of the 1960s.

Book excerpt: What if your spouse's affair was the best thing that ever happened to you? An affair can be one of the most traumatic events in a marriage. The betrayal, division, anger, and hurt can often lead to the end of what was once a strong, pure relationship. But what if that same affair was the thing that brought healing to your marriage? For Martez and Woodrina Layton, an extramarital affair became the open door to communication, trust, encouragement, and love in a marriage that was struggling to survive. In their book, A Blessed Affair, the Laytons offer perspective on how through faith, trust, and perseverance, an affair does not have to be the end of a marriage, and could in fact be its saving grace. They will cover key issues such as: - Communication - Anger - Forgiveness - Spirituality - Steadfastness With these keys, any marriage can recover from the trauma of an affair and emerge even stronger on the other side. Read on, and learn why cheating may be a blessing in disguise.
