Book excerpt: This volume contains the notes from five lecture courses devoted to nonautonomous differential systems, in which appropriate topological and dynamical techniques were described and applied to a variety of problems. The courses took place during the C.I.M.E. Session "Stability and Bifurcation Problems for Non-Autonomous Differential Equations," held in Cetraro, Italy, June 19-25 2011. Anna Capietto and Jean Mawhin lectured on nonlinear boundary value problems; they applied the Maslov index and degree-theoretic methods in this context. Rafael Ortega discussed the theory of twist maps with nonperiodic phase and presented applications. Peter Kloeden and Sylvia Novo showed how dynamical methods can be used to study the stability/bifurcation properties of bounded solutions and of attracting sets for nonautonomous differential and functional-differential equations. The volume will be of interest to all researchers working in these and related fields.

This book was released on 1988 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A class of nonlinear Sturm-Liouville problems is considered. These problems admit zero as a trivial solution and the nonlinear operator linearized about zero has a purely continuous spectrum 0, INFINITY). Variational methods and approximation arguments are used to obtain the existence of nontrivial solutions with any prescribed number of nodes and for some nonlinearities it is shown that this solution is unique. Moreover, the lowest point of the continuous spectrum is bifurcation point; infinitely many continua of solutions, which are distinguished by nodal properties, bifurcate from the line of trivial solutions at this point. Results are also obtained in higher dimensions via investigation of the set of radial solutions of appropriate partial differential equations. Keywords: Nodes; Ordinary differential equations; Boundary value problems. (KR).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of survey articles based on lectures presented at a colloquium and workshop in Geneva in 2003 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles François Sturm. It aims at giving an overview of the development of Sturm-Liouville theory from its historical roots to present day research. It is the first time that such a comprehensive survey has been made available in compact form. The contributions come from internationally renowned experts and cover a wide range of developments of the theory. The book can therefore serve both as an introduction to Sturm-Liouville theory and as background for ongoing research. The volume is addressed to researchers in related areas, to advanced students and to those interested in the historical development of mathematics. The book will also be of interest to those involved in applications of the theory to diverse areas such as engineering, fluid dynamics and computational spectral analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our understanding of the fundamental processes of the natural world is based to a large extent on partial differential equations (PDEs). The second edition of Partial Differential Equations provides an introduction to the basic properties of PDEs and the ideas and techniques that have proven useful in analyzing them. It provides the student a broad perspective on the subject, illustrates the incredibly rich variety of phenomena encompassed by it, and imparts a working knowledge of the most important techniques of analysis of the solutions of the equations. In this book mathematical jargon is minimized. Our focus is on the three most classical PDEs: the wave, heat and Laplace equations. Advanced concepts are introduced frequently but with the least possible technicalities. The book is flexibly designed for juniors, seniors or beginning graduate students in science, engineering or mathematics.

This book was released on 2024-01-12 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a self-contained introduction to ordinary differential equations and dynamical systems suitable for beginning graduate students. The first part begins with some simple examples of explicitly solvable equations and a first glance at qualitative methods. Then the fundamental results concerning the initial value problem are proved: existence, uniqueness, extensibility, dependence on initial conditions. Furthermore, linear equations are considered, including the Floquet theorem, and some perturbation results. As somewhat independent topics, the Frobenius method for linear equations in the complex domain is established and Sturm–Liouville boundary value problems, including oscillation theory, are investigated. The second part introduces the concept of a dynamical system. The Poincaré–Bendixson theorem is proved, and several examples of planar systems from classical mechanics, ecology, and electrical engineering are investigated. Moreover, attractors, Hamiltonian systems, the KAM theorem, and periodic solutions are discussed. Finally, stability is studied, including the stable manifold and the Hartman–Grobman theorem for both continuous and discrete systems. The third part introduces chaos, beginning with the basics for iterated interval maps and ending with the Smale–Birkhoff theorem and the Melnikov method for homoclinic orbits. The text contains almost three hundred exercises. Additionally, the use of mathematical software systems is incorporated throughout, showing how they can help in the study of differential equations.

The presentation stresses analytical methods, concrete examples, and geometric intuition. The theory is developed systematically, starting with first-order differential equations and their bifurcations, followed by phase plane analysis, limit cycles and their bifurcations, and culminating with the Lorenz equations, chaos, iterated maps, period doubling, renormalization, fractals, and strange attractors.

Book excerpt: Written for beginners, this well organized introduction promotes a solid understanding of differential equations that is flexible enough to meet the needs of many different disciplines. With less emphasis on formal calculation than found in other books all the basic methods are covered—first order equations, separation, exact form, and linear equations—as well as higher order cases, linear equation with constant and variable coefficients, Laplace transform methods, and boundary value problems. The book'ssystems focus induces an intuitive understanding of the concept of a solution of an initial value problem in order to resolve potential confusion about what is being approximated when a numerical method is used. The author outlines first order equations including linear and nonlinear equations and systems of differential equations, as well as linear differential equations including the Laplace transform, and variable coefficients, nonlinear differential equations, and boundary problems and PDEs. For those looking for a solid introduction to differential equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents a systematic and compact treatment of the qualitative theory of half-lineardifferential equations. It contains the most updated and comprehensive material and represents the first attempt to present the results of the rapidly developing theory of half-linear differential equations in a unified form. The main topics covered by the book are oscillation and asymptotic theory and the theory of boundary value problems associated with half-linear equations, but the book also contains a treatment of related topics like PDE's with p-Laplacian, half-linear difference equations and various more general nonlinear differential equations.- The first complete treatment of the qualitative theory of half-linear differential equations.- Comparison of linear and half-linear theory.- Systematic approach to half-linear oscillation and asymptotic theory.- Comprehensive bibliography and index.- Useful as a reference book in the topic.
