Book excerpt: Identifies eight new competencies that will be required by twenty-first century leaders, and profiles twelve up-and-coming leaders who exemplify them. New times demand new kinds of leaders. In a technological workplace which may be more virtual than physical, where bytes of information and cyberspace need to be managed more than people, leaders will have to thrive amidst high chaos and continuous change. Global Leaders for the Twenty-First Century profiles twelve such leaders from business and government and discusses eight key attributes necessary for successful leadership in the future. Based upon extensive research and experiences with top leaders from around the world, the authors have identified the eight critical competencies needed by twenty-first century leaders: (1) a global mindset, (2) learning and teaching skills, (3) a servant-steward relationship to one’s organization, (4) systems thinking, (5) spirituality and a concern for ethics, (6) a willingness to embrace new technologies, (7) innovation and risk-taking, and (8) vision-building. Twelve of the top up-and-coming leaders from around the world who possess these attributes are profiled. They include the Fortune magazine’s first two Asian leaders of the year (CEOs Nobuyuki Idei of Sony and Cheong Choong Kong of Singapore Airlines), two highly acclaimed political leaders (President Mary McAleese of Ireland and United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan), the leading lights in the technology field (CEOs Jorma Ollila of Nokia in Finland and John Chambers of Cisco Systems in the United States), pioneer leaders for women (Carol Bartz, CEO of AutoDesk) and minorities (Ken Chenault, CEO-designate of American Express), the world’s most innovative leader (Ricardo Semler, owner of Semco in Brazil), a leader in recognizing the importance of community service and employee partnership (Henry Carris, Carris Community of Companies), the director of one of the top executive development programs in the world (Felipe Alfonso, Asian Institute of Management), and a radical new thinker in the energy field (John Browne, CEO of BP Amoco). Michael J. Marquardt is the author of fourteen books, including Building the Learning Organization, selected as Book of the Year by the Academy of Human Resource Development. He is Professor of Human Resource Development and Program Director of Overseas Programs at George Washington University and President of Global Learning Associates. Nancy O. Berger is Assistant Professor of Human Resource Development at George Washington University and President of Training for Performance, Inc.

Book excerpt: This illuminating study critiques the concept of leadership as understood in the last 75 years and looks to the twenty-first century for a reconstructed understanding of leadership in the postindustrial era. More similarities in past decades were found than had been thought; the thread throughout Rost's book is that leadership was conceived of as good management. He develops a new definition and paradigm for leadership in this volume that distinguishes leadership from management in fundamental ways. The ethics of leadership from a postindustrial perspective completes the paradigm. The book concludes with suggestions that can be immediately utilized in helping to transform our understanding of leadership.

Book excerpt: This new edition of a business textbook bestseller has been completely updated to reflect the numerous global changes that have occurred since 1999: globalization, SARS, AIDS, the handover of Hong Kong, and so forth. In particular, the book presents a fuller discussion of global business today. Also, issues of terrorism and state security as they affect culture and business are discussed substantially. The structure and content of the book remains the same, with thorough updating of the plentiful region and country descriptions, demographic data, graphs and maps. This book differs from textbooks on International Management because it zeroes in on culture as the crucial dimension and educates students about the cultures around the world so they will be better prepared to work successfully for a multinational corporation or in a global context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women as Global Leaders is the second volume in the new Women and Leadership: Research, Theory, and Practice book series published for the International Leadership Association by IAP. Global leadership is an emerging area of research, with only a small but growing published literature base. More specifically, the topic of women’s advances and adventures in leading within the global context is barely covered in the existing leadership literature. Although few women are serving in global leadership roles in corporate and non-profit arenas, and as heads of nations, that number is growing (e.g., Indira Nooyi at PepsiCo, Sheryl Sandberg at Facebook, Marissa Mayer at Yahoo, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as president of Liberia, Angela Merkel as chancellor of Germany). The purpose of this volume is to provide the reader with current conceptualizations and theory related to women as global leaders, recent empirical investigations of the phenomenon, analysis of effective global leadership development programs, and portraits of women who lead, or have led, in a global role. The volume is divided into four sections. The first section covers the state of women as global leaders, containing chapters by Joyce Osland and Nancy Adler, pioneers in the field of global and/or women’s leadership. The second section describes approaches to women’s global leadership. The third section offers an analysis of programs that are useful in developing women as global leaders, with the final section profiling women as global leaders, including Margaret Thatcher, Nobel Laureate Malala Yousfazai, and Golda Meir. As Barbara Kellerman noted in the Foreword, "this book... should be understood as a collection whose time has come, precisely because women now have opportunities to lead that are far more expansive than they were even in the recent past. Though their numbers remain low, they are able in some cases to exercise leadership not only as outsiders, but also as insiders, from the very positions of power and authority to which men forever have had access."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two foreign policy experts chart a new American grand strategy to meet the greatest geopolitical challenges of the coming decade This ambitious and incisive book presents a new vision for American foreign policy and international order at a time of historic upheaval. The United States’ global leadership crisis is not a passing shock created by the Trump presidency or COVID-19, but the product of forces that will endure for decades. Amidst political polarization, technological transformation, and major global power shifts, Lissner and Rapp-Hooper convincingly argue, only a grand strategy of openness can protect American security and prosperity despite diminished national strength. Disciplined and forward-looking, an openness strategy would counter authoritarian competitors by preventing the emergence of closed spheres of influence, maintaining access to the global commons, supporting democracies without promoting regime change, and preserving economic interdependence. The authors provide a roadmap for the next president, who must rebuild strength at home while preparing for novel forms of international competition. Lucid, trenchant, and practical, An Open World is an essential guide to the future of geopolitics.

This book was released on 2019-01-02 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes how different nations have defined the core competencies and skills that young people will need in order to thrive in the twenty-first-century, and how those nations have fashioned educational policies and curricula meant to promote those skills. The book examines six countries—Chile, China, India, Mexico, Singapore, and the United States—exploring how each one defines, supports, and cultivates those competencies that students will need in order to succeed in the current century. Teaching and Learning for the Twenty-First Century appears at a time of heightened attention to comparative studies of national education systems, and to international student assessments such as those that have come out of PISA (the Program for International Student Assessment), led by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. This book’s crucial contribution to the burgeoning field of international education arises out of its special attention to first principles—and thus to first questions: As Reimers and Chung explain, “much can be gained by an explicit investigation of the intended purposes of education, in what they attempt to teach students, and in the related questions of why those purposes and how they are achieved.” These questions are crucial to education practice and reform at a time when educators (and the students they serve) face unique, pressing challenges. The book’s detailed attention to such questions signals its indispensable value for policy makers, scholars, and education leaders today.

Book excerpt: Twenty-First-Century Leadership to Fight the Code Red for Business aims to equip a cadre of leaders with the tools they need to stop using fossil fuels for energy, electricity, and transport to reduce their carbon footprint. Inspired by 21 Lessons for the 21st Century by Yuval Noah Harari, the book offers an important addition to the canon of literature for leaders who want to cultivate a sustainability mindset. In straightforward prose, the author outlines what’s at stake amid the climate crisis and the social, physical, and economic calamities that will follow if leaders don’t act. The book also highlights three disruptors—technology, geopolitics, and governance—that need strategic action. The four key traits that set apart a twenty-first-century leader include: • an appreciation for mobilizing science as part of business strategy; • an urgent need to make an impact on the code red for business; • a sustainability mindset that prioritizes the planet and people over profit; • a willingness to embed the Twenty-First-Century Board Leadership Model in the business’s agenda. We can either ignore science, as the nineteenth-century-mindset leaders have done by making profit their foremost priority, or become relevant, twenty-first-century, science-led, sustainability-mindset leaders dedicated to saving the planet.

Book excerpt: In this age of globalization challenges--from economic uncertainty to emerging markets--there are no mapped out answers for the international manager. Global Explorers guides the global manager from the periphery to the center stage of international business leadership. In a 1997 survey of Fortune 500 firms conducted by authors J. Stewart Black, Allen J. Morrison and Hal B. Gregersen, virtually all companies indicated there was a severe shortage of global leaders. The demand for competent global leaders far outstrips the supply. Global Explorers provides the skills and outlines the competencies future global managers need to fill the leadership gap. Using extensive research, real-life examples, and 130 in-depth interviews with senior executives representing 50 global companies, including IBM, Disney, Exxon and Sony, Global Explorers suggests the reasons for the global leadership shortage, and identifies the necessary skills to compete in the international marketplace. For managers who want to safeguard their corporate future in these changing times, Global Explorers will help them develop a personal program for developing and balancing the skills they need to become successful global leaders.
