Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indian philosopical heritage, particularly the advaita (non-dual) principle, is generally called Vedanta, so called due to its collective occurrence at the end of the great scriptures called the Veda-s. This text is a compilation of the weekly distributions through text and email to a small group of friends and relatives over a period of 5 years. The goal of this work is to introduce the principal sources of the Vedantic philosophy and to motivate the reader to study further this vast subject and also practice it in their daily lives. The prasthānatrayī (the set of trilogy of sources for philosophical journey) is generally considered as the fountainhead of the Vedānta philosophy. It consists of (1) the Upanishad-s (generally known as Śruti prasthāna, the set of revelations to the great sages as part of the four Veda-s; ṛk-, Yajur-, Sāma-, and Atharva-), (2) the Brahma Sūtrā-s (Nyāya prasthāna, logical set of axioms), and (3) the Bhagavad Gītā (Smriti prasthāna, part of remembered traditions). All the three parts of the trilogy are briefly covered in this text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: In this book Professor Banerjee has brought together a few of his ideas, bearing directly in some cases and indirectly in others, upon the philosophic thought of India. His understanding of Indian philosophy is rather unorthodox. He is less dependent upon textual evidence than writers on Indian philosophy usually are, and he makes use of his own philosophical insight in the discovery of the true spirit of Indian thought and wisdom. It is some of the Western interpreters of the religious and philosophical literature of India who have tried to establish that the Indian outlook on life is notoriously religious and spiritual and, what is more, is wedded to the doctrine of world-negation. It is most unfortunate, however, that Indians have by and large accepted with approval this misleading Western assessment of the Indian view of life. As a result, immense harm has ensued to the cause of the discovery of the cultural and spiritual heritage of India. It is, therefore, in the fitness of things that Professor Banerjee for fresh researches in the field of Indian philosophy with a view to showing that the Indian way of thinking is essentially humanistic, and that humanism in ancient India reached its culmination in the wisdom which found the clearest and the boldest expression in the life and teaching of Gautama the Buddha.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The visible phenomena of the universe are bound by the universal law of cause and effect. The effect is visible or perceptible, while the cause is invisible or imperceptible. The falling of an apple from a tree is the effect of a certain invisible force called gravitation. Although the force cannot be perceived by the senses, its expression is visible. All perceptible phenomena are but the various expressions of different forces which act as invisible agents upon the subtle and impercep-tible forms of matter. These invisible agents or forces together with the imperceptible particles of matter make up the subtle states of the phenomenal universe. When a subtle force becomes objectified, it appears as a gross object. Therefore, we can say, that every gross form is an expression of some subtle force acting upon the subtle particles of matter. The minute particles of hydrogen and oxygen when combined by chemical force, appear in the gross form of water. Water can never be separated from hydrogen and oxygen, which are its subtle component parts. Its existence depends upon that of its component parts, or in other words, upon its subtle form. If the subtle state changes, the gross manifestation will also change. The peculiarity in the gross form of a plant depends upon the peculiar nature of its subtle form, the seed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vedanta is one of the world's most ancient religious philosophies and one of its broadest. Based on the Vedas, the sacred scriptures of India, Vedanta affirms the oneness of existence, the divinity of the soul, and the harmony of religions. Vedanta is the philosophical foundation of Hinduism; but while Hinduism includes aspects of Indian culture, Vedanta is universal in its application and is equally relevant to all countries, all cultures, and all religious backgrounds. The unity of existence is one of the great themes of Vedanta and an essential pillar of its philosophy. Unity is the song of life; it is the grand theme underlying the rich variations that exist throughout the cosmos. Whatever we see, whatever we experience, is only a manifestation of this eternal oneness. The divinity at the core of our being is the same divinity that illumines the sun, the moon, and the stars. There is no place where we, infinite in nature, do not exist.
