Ist dieser Absolutheitsanspruch heute noch vertretbar? Wie verhalt er sich zu der Suche nach dem Frieden der Religionen und Kulturen? Als ich meine Vortrage zu diesem Themenkreis sichtete, zeigte sich, dass von verschiedenen Ausgangspunkten her sich doch so etwas wie ein Ganzes geformt hatte - sehr fragmentarisch und unvollkommen gewiss, aber als Wortmeldung zu einer grossen, uns alle tief betreffenden Sache vielleicht doch nicht ganz unnutz. So habe ich mich entschlossen, die thematisch in die Richtung der Fragen nach Glaube, Religion, Kultur, Wahrheit, Toleranz zielenden Texte ... als eine Ganzheit vorzulegen und zur Debatte zu stellen. So beginnt der evangelische Pfarrer, Publizist und Träger des Friedenspreises des Deutschen Buchhandels aus dem Jahre 1993 die dritte Jenaer Gustav-Mensching-Vorlesung für religiöse Toleranz. Es gibt in der Menschheit nicht nur unterschiedliche, sondern auch disparate Kulturen. Alle erheben sie Ansprüche auf die Gültigkeit ihrer "Wahrheiten", ihrer kulturellen, religiösen, politischen Grundüberzeugungen und auf die daraus abgeleiteten Gesellschaftsstrukturen, Rechtssysteme, Lebensweisen usw. Schorlemmer umkreist das Thema von verschiedenen Seiten: theologisch, literarisch, politisch, religiös - aber stets kritisch. Die Frage nach der religiösen Verwurzelung unserer Kulturen stellt sich angesichts einer globalisierten Welt neu, zumal gerade das Christentum und die christlichen Kirchen im europäischen Kontext immer mehr an Akzeptanz einbüßen. Ein theologischer Tour d'horizon diskutiert die monotheistische Problematik vom einen Gott und den Göttern. Schorlemmer fordert "Mut zur Subjektivität". Er stellt fest: "Glaube wird im Dativ, nicht im Akkusativ formuliert, so dass es nicht mehr heißt: Ich glaube an oder ich glaube das, sondern ich glaube ihm. Das lässt Raum für echten Dialog, weil personale Gewissheit nicht objektivierbare (Allgemein-)Gültigkeit beansprucht." Vor dem Hintergrund des 11. Septembers und des Irak-Krieges greift Schorlemmer immer wieder in das aktuelle politische Geschehen ein und kommentiert es treffsicher. Einer der Kerngedanken des Vortrages: "Wahrheit wird hier nicht auf ihre Wirksamkeit, auf ihre politische Durchsetzbarkeit oder auf ihre bloße moralische Relevanz reduziert, wohl aber wird gefragt, welche praktischen Folgen die eigenen Wahrheitsansprüche haben, inwieweit der eigene Anspruch sich anderen Ansprüchen stellt, andere Erfahrungen kritisch aneignet oder mit guten Gründen widerlegt. Dazu gehört es eben, den Widerspruch nicht aus den Dingen herauszunehmen, sondern diesen klar zu sehen, zu benennen und fruchtbar zu machen". Der Band enthält zwei weitere Beiträge von Friedrich Schorlemmer die die Toleranzthematik ergänzen, weil es in ihnen um ein "Leben in Mauern" geht: "Niemand hat die Absicht, eine Mauer zu errichten" (Vortrag zum 13. August 2001 - 40 Jahre danach), und "Weil einmal Schluss sein muss. Entmündigung, Entwürdigung, Entwertung?".

Etymologisch ist es mit dem Wort „dolere“ verwandt, was wiederum als „Schmerz empfinden“ übersetzt werden kann. Toleranz ist meines Erachtens die Fähigkeit das Anderssein von Religionen, Rassen und Ansichten vorurteilsfrei zu respektieren und das Gemeinsame zu entdecken. Um eine Vorstellung vom Toleranzbegriff zu erhalten, geht Ingo Broer auf Alexander Mitscherlich und auf die christliche Tugend ein. Der Toleranz-begriff wird von Alexander Mitscherlich als schwammig beschrieben, da jeder etwas anderes darunter verstehen kann. Meistens ist dann auch von Toleranz als christliche Tugend die Rede. Toleranz kann aber so lange keine christliche Tugend sein, weil das Christentum und auch andere Religionen die angeblich „eine und einzige“ Wahrheit vertreten. Durch die immer wiederkehrenden Entwicklungen des Christentums ist entweder eine Distanz oder eine Nähe zur Wahrheit vorhanden, die nicht immer „optimal“ gelehrt werden kann. Ingo Broer definiert Toleranz folgendermaßen: „Christliche Toleranz als Tugend und Aufgabe, so möchte ich versuchsweise definieren, müsste eine Haltung meinen, die in Anerkennung der Selbst- Offenbarung Gottes im Christusereignis sowohl zu den jeweils anderen christlichen Denominationen als auch zu den anderen, nicht-christlichen Religionen offen ja sagt, ihr Lebensrecht also nicht nur notgedrungen akzeptiert und sie nicht nur als schlechthin defiziente Modi von Religion ansieht.“
