Book excerpt: After the devastating disaster caused by the tsunami on 26 December 2004, disaster mitigation and rehabilitation have become some of the most pressing topics for discussion in geotechnical engineering and related professions. Some of the most important contributions to this discussion were made during the International Conference on Geotechnical Engineering for Disaster Mitigation and Rehabilitation, the first of its kind held in the Asia-Pacific region. It was organized by the Joint Working Group on Geotechnical Engineering for Disaster Mitigation and Rehabilitation (JWG-DMR), which is supported by national geotechnical societies from Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Southeast Asia (comprising Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand) and Sri Lanka.Disaster management encompasses diverse topics such as natural disasters (tsunamis, earthquakes, landslides, etc.), mitigation (early warning and prediction systems, hazard mapping, risk analysis, coastal protection works, etc.), rehabilitation and reconstruction (difficult soils and ground treatment, design against earthquakes and other natural disasters, etc.), and many others, including soil dynamics, liquefaction, stability, and environmental protection. This volume contains over 100 high quality papers contributed by authors from participating countries, including keynote and invited lectures delivered by eminent researchers and practitioners. The proceedings will benefit the geotechnical profession as a whole, in particular those who are involved in disaster prevention, mitigation, rehabilitation and reconstruction works. In addition, the contributions will add impetus to research and development in this important domain: the long-term goal is to mitigate the unacceptable magnitude of destruction and the number of human lives lost such as in the recent 2004 tsunami tragedy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the last fifty years the performance requirements for technical objects and systems were supplemented with: customer expectations (quality), abilities to prevent the loss of the object properties in operation time (reliability and maintainability), protection against the effects of undesirable events (safety and security) and the ability to restore performance (resilience). The need to adapt the operation of complex systems in such an uncertain and volatile environment has caused the necessity to formulate new and well established achievements associated with modeling, testing and evaluation of these properties. The concept of a complex system applies not only to the technical ones but also the infrastructure of major importance for social life such as transportation and logistics systems, buildings, power systems, water distribution systems or health services. Safety and Reliability: Methodology and Applications contains the proceedings of the 24th European Safety and Reliability Conference (ESREL 2014, Wroclaw, Poland, 14-18 September 2014), and discusses theories and methods and their applications in the areas of risk, safety and reliability. The abstracts book (408 pages) + full paper CD-ROM (2496 pages) will be of interest to researchers and practitioners, academics and engineers working in academic, industrial and governmental sectors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Earthquakes and tsunamis are two major natural disasters, causing enormous life and material losses over the entire world, especially in the developing countries that are not well prepared. Since earthquakes and tsunamis are natural phenomena that cannot be prevented, a series of measures need to be taken to minimize the losses. Disaster mitigation covers a wide variety of activities involving numerous disciplines. Civil engineering makes probably the most effective contribution to the mitigation of life and material losses in earthquakes and tsunamis. This volume contains 11 major contributions of distinguished experts from various areas of civil engineering, and aims at informing the civil engineering community about the recent progress in disaster mitigation concerning earthquakes and tsunamis. It is designed to address the standard practicing civil engineer with the aim of carrying the scientific research results to the engineering practice in simple engineering language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the concepts of Resilience-Based Design (RBD) as an extension of Performance-Based Design. It provides readers with a range of cutting-edge methodologies for evaluating resilience and clarifies the difference between resilience, vulnerability and sustainability. Initially, the book focuses on describing the different types of uncertainty that arise in the context of resilience evaluation. This is followed by an entire chapter dedicated to the analytical and experimental recovery functions. Then, starting from the definition of resilience provided by MCEER, an extension of the methodology is provided that introduces the seven dimensions of Community Resilience, summarized in the acronym PEOPLES. They are: Population and Demographics, Environmental/Ecosystem, Organized Governmental Services, Physical infrastructures, Lifestyle and Community Competence, Economic Development, and Socio-Cultural Capital. For each dimension, components and subcomponents are defined and the related indices are provided. Underlining the importance of the physical infrastructure dimension, the book provides several examples of applications for transportation, hydraulic, gas and power networks. The problem of interdependencies and the domino effect is also taken into account during the analysis. One of the book’s closing chapters focuses on different methodologies for improving disaster preparedness and engineering mitigation strategies, while the last chapter describes the different computer platforms available on the market for evaluating Community Resilience. The book offers readers an extensive introduction to the concept of Resilience-Based Design, together with selected advanced applications for specialists. No prerequisite knowledge is needed in order to understand the book, and the Appendix offers valuable supplemental information on e.g. the probabilistic concepts. As such, the book offers a valuable resource for graduate students, young engineers and researchers who are interested in the topic, and can also be used as a supplementary text in graduate level Disaster Resilience courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated Disaster Science and Management: Global Case Studies in Mitigation and Recovery bridges the gap between scientific research on natural disasters and the practice of disaster management. It examines natural hazards, including earthquakes, landslides and tsunamis, and uses integrated disaster management techniques, quantitative methods and big data analytics to create early warning models to mitigate impacts of these hazards and reduce the risk of disaster. It also looks at mitigation as part of the recovery process after a disaster, as in the case of the Nepal earthquake. Edited by global experts in disaster management and engineering, the book offers case studies that focus on the critical phases of disaster management. Identifies advanced techniques and models based on natural disaster science for forecasting disasters and analyzing risk Offers a holistic approach to the problem of disaster management, including preparation, recovery, and resilience Includes coverage of social, economic, and environmental impacts on disasters
