His work is that of a proud individualist asserting the primacy of instinct through agonized self-conflict. Born in 1788, Byron is considered one of the greatest poets of the Romantic Movement. This volume presents critical commentary from his lifetime and beyond to provide a thorough and thought-provoking portrait of this essential poet's evolving reputation. This new title in the ""Bloom's Classic Critical Views"" series also features a chronology of Lord Byron's life, an index of the volume, and an introductory essay by noted literary scholar Harold Bloom.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Shrubs The cultivation of shrubs and trees is a very simple matter, and the principal details can be readily mastered by those who have an elementary knowledge of garden ing. Unless the circumstances are quite exceptional and the nursery is within a few miles of the garden, plants of medium size should be preferred to those that have attained to large dimensions. The latter are costly be cause of the large amount expended in labour upon their preparation by the nurseryman, and they are much more difficult to establish. Sometimes with considerable care they die in the summer after they are planted. In other cases they are so slow in becoming established that they make but little growth for two or three years and when they readily take to their new quarters, it is not unusual for them to be overtaken by plants several years younger at the time of planting. Speaking in a general way, the plants offered at the usual catalogue price are the best, having regard to their cost and the rapidity with which, under ordinary care, they become established and fill the positions assigned them. Book excerpt: With its stylish new package, updated information on the health and environmental benefits of insect eating, and breed-your-own instructions, this new edition of The Eat-a-Bug Cookbook is the go-to resource for anyone interested in becoming an entomological epicure. For many Americans, eating a lowly insect is something you’d only do on a dare. But with naturalist and noted bug chef David George Gordon, bug-eating is fun, exciting, and downright delicious! Now you can impress, enlighten, and entertain your family and friends with Gordon’s one-of-a-kind recipes. Spice things up at the next neighborhood potluck with a big bowl of Orthopteran Orzo—pasta salad with a cricket-y twist. Conquer your fear of spiders with a Deep-Fried Tarantula. And for dessert, why not try a White Chocolate and Wax Worm Cookie? (They’re so tasty, the kids will be begging for seconds!) Today, there are more reasons than ever before to explore entomophagy (that’s bug-eating, by the way). It’s an environmentally-friendly source of protein: Research shows that bug farming reduces greenhouse gas emissions and is exponentially more water-efficient than farming for beef, chicken, or pigs. Mail-order bugs are readily available online—but if you’re more of a DIY-type, The Eat-A-Bug Cookbook includes plenty of tips for sustainably harvesting or raising your own. Filled with anecdotes, insights, and practical how-tos, The Eat-A-Bug Cookbook is a perfect primer for anyone interested in becoming an entomological epicure.

Book excerpt: 'Ingenious and entertaining' Sunday Times ' Byron himself would have been pleased by such an eerie, erudite addition to his myth' Time Out Infamous poet Lord Byron comes to life with incendiary brilliance in this spellbinding blend of gothic imagination and documented fact. Wandering in the mountains of Greece, the supreme sensualist is drawn to the beauty of a mysterious fugitive slave; soon he is utterly entranced, and his fate is sealed. He embarks on a life of adventure even his genius could not have foreseen; chosen to enjoy powers beyond those any vampire has ever known, Byron traverses the centuries and enters a dark, intoxicating world of long-lost secrets, ancient arts and scorching excesses of evil. But Byron's gift is also his torment: an all-consuming thirst that withers life at the root, damning all those he loves. With its impeccable scholarship and breathtaking storytelling, THE VAMPYRE is a wonderful combination of fact and fantasy.
