Book excerpt: Since I have been studying the Bible I have had a desire to prove to the Jewish people and the rest of the world that Jesus is the Anointed One. No other person fulfills the interwoven complexities of the living Word of God. When I first started to study Genesis I only had an inward intuition that there was more to the scriptures about creation than I was being taught. Much of what I was taught in time was filtered, stretched, and shaken; some of what I believed to be true was thrown on the discarded pile of unscriptural religious knowledge. Kenneth Hagin used this story to prove a spiritual point. Watching cows graze in a field, he noticed occasionally one would get a stick in his mouth along with all the tender grass. The cow would simply spit out the sticks and eat the good stuff. I have eaten of the good stuff and grazed on the Word of God in Genesis chapters 1-2-3. I have spit out my share of sticks. Sometimes it is tough to "Spit out the stick," when one is comfortable with what one believes. Christians tend to be close-minded from the mere thought of digging a little deeper. Intellects have conquered the territory of creation and have represented the Christian believers to be something from the dark ages of illiteracy. I hope that one reads this book with the intent to eat the hay and spit out the sticks of disagreement, knowing that my heartfelt desire is to bring fresh insight to a dead and dying world so that Holy Spirit will prune the vines of your minds and all that read will go forth with boldness and bring forth more fruit for the Kingdom of God. In doing this all of mankind will surely know that Jesus is Lord!

It is a commentary in two stages. First, the text is allowed to speak for itself, using a narrative approach. Then, specific Jewish and Christian traditions flowing from the text are identified, and the underlying hermeneutical moves analyzed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nature of the Genesis narrative has sparked much debate among Christians. This book introduces three predominant interpretive genres and their implications for biblical understanding. Each contributor identifies their position on the genre or genres of Genesis, chapters 1-11, addresses why their interpretation is respectful of and appropriate to the text, and contributes examples of its application to a variety of passages. The positions include: Theological History(Genesis can be taken seriously as both history and theology) – defended by James K. Hoffmeier. Proto-History (the early Genesis narratives consist of a variety of literary genres; which, nonetheless, do not obscure the book's theological teaching) – defended by Gordon J. Wenham. Ancient Historiography (an understanding of Genesis that seeks to reconcile the limitations of its human authors with the nature of it being the Word of God) defended by Kenton L. Sparks. General editor and Old Testament scholar Charles Halton explains the importance of genre and provides historical insight in the introduction and helpful summaries of each position in the conclusion. In the reader-friendly Counterpoints format, this book helps readers to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of each view and draw informed conclusions in this much-debated topic.

Book excerpt: Written during a time of church schism that has left Christians confused and questioning their status before God, the author of 1,2, 3 John argues that the Christian life has two fundamental markers: Acceptance of Jesus Christ’s role in God’s plan of salvation, and the need to practice love in interactions with other believers. In his commentary, the 24th volume in the Believers Church Bible Commentary series, J. E. McDermond shows that that these two crucial concepts are as relevant and important today as they were back then. This Believers Church Bible Commentary series is a readable series of commentaries for all who seek more fully to understand the original message of Scripture and its meaning for today—Sunday school teachers, members of Bible study groups, students, pastors, and other seekers. The Believers Church Commentary Series is a cooperative project of Brethren in Christ Church, Brethren Church, Church of the Brethren, Mennonite Brethren Church, Mennonite Church USA and Mennonite Church Canada.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new commentary for today's world, The Story of God Bible Commentary explains and illuminates each passage of Scripture in light of the Bible's grand story. The first commentary series to do so, SGBC offers a clear and compelling exposition of biblical texts, guiding everyday readers in how to creatively and faithfully live out the Bible in their own contexts. Its story-centric approach is ideal for pastors, students, Sunday school teachers, and laypeople alike. Each volume employs three main, easy-to-use sections designed to help readers live out God's story: LISTEN to the Story: Includes complete NIV text with references to other texts at work in each passage, encouraging the reader to hear it within the Bible's grand story. EXPLAIN the Story: Explores and illuminates each text as embedded in its canonical and historical setting. LIVE the Story: Reflects on how each text can be lived today and includes contemporary stories and illustrations to aid preachers, teachers, and students. —1, 2, & 3 John— The three letters of John are ripe with immediate encouragement, practical application, and profound insight. The twin themes of love and truth dominate their theological content. If these letters seem, at times, more detached from the biblical narrative than most of the New Testament, we can still understand them in light of that story. Edited by Scot McKnight and Tremper Longman III, and written by a number of top-notch theologians, The Story of God Bible Commentary series will bring relevant, balanced, and clear-minded theological insight to any biblical education or ministry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is general agreement in the field of Biblical studies that study of the formation of the Pentateuch is in disarray. David M. Carr turns to the Genesis Primeval History, Genesis 1-11, to offer models for the formation of Pentateuchal texts that may have traction within this fractious context. Building on two centuries of historical study of Genesis 1-11, this book provides new support for the older theory that the bulk of Genesis 1-11 was created out of a combination of two originally separate source strata: a Priestly source and an earlier non-Priestly source that was used to supplement the Priestly framework. Though this overall approach contradicts some recent attempts to replace such source models with theories of post-Priestly scribal expansion, Carr does find evidence of multiple layers of scribal revision in the non-P and P sources, from the expansion of an early independent non-Priestly primeval history with a flood narrative and related materials to a limited set of identifiable layers of Priestly material that culminate in the P-like redaction of the whole. This book synthesizes prior scholarship to show how both the P and non-Priestly strata of Genesis also emerged out of a complex interaction by Judean scribes with non-biblical literary traditions, particularly with Mesopotamian textual traditions about primeval origins. The Formation of Genesis 1-11 makes a significant contribution to scholarship on one of the most important texts in the Hebrew Bible and will influence models for the formation of the Hebrew Bible as a whole.
