Book excerpt: An experiment was conducted to evaluate, by use of a general aviation simulator and airplane, typical versus experimental concepts of general aviation cockpit environments in an effort to reduce pilot workload and training time to operate an airplane in today's IFR environment and to meet the flight skills required for the instrument rating flight test. Phase I of the experiment examined the flight performance of a group of noninstrument-rated pilot subjects utilizing a cockpit environment typical of aircraft used for single engine instrument flight training. Phase II of the experiment examined the instrument flight performance of a similar group of pilots. Flight training was accomplished in an experimental cockpit environment consisting of improved cockpit displays, controls and instruments to provide maximum assistance to the pilot. Project results indicated a reduced pilot workload and training time to operate an aircraft in an IFR environment. An experimental flight training syllabus was utilized with both pilot groups. Phase III of the experiment examined the flight performance of the Phase II group in a conventional cockpit environment. The report also describes pilot performance and problem areas encountered during training and check flights in both the typical and experimental cockpit environments of the simulator and airplane. The display may include other information such as, ground speed and altitude of the other aircraft and navigational information. This and other studies explore the effects on safe and efficient air traffic flow associated with the use of a CDTI. When the CDTI becomes available, it is likely that air carrier operators will be among the first to make use of this traffic information. General aviation (GA) aircraft will typically be much less likely to invest in this type of display. This creates a variety of capabilities within the air traffic control system. In this simulation there was a combination of aircraft types: general aviation single engine aircraft flown by GA pilots and air carrier aircraft flown by line pilots with a mix of CDTI capabilities. This study examines the effects of the aircraft type and the use of the cockpit display of traffic information on air traffic control.

Book excerpt: A head-up general aviation landing aid called a landing site indicator (LASI) was tested in a fixed-base, visual simulator and in an airplane to determine the effectiveness of the LASI. The display, which had a simplified format and method of implementation, presented to the pilot in his line of sight through the windshield a graphic representation of the airplane's velocity vector. In each testing model (simulation of flight), each of 4 pilots made 20 landing approaches with the LASI and 20 approaches without it. The standard deviations of approach and touchdown parameters were considered an indication of pilot consistency. Use of the LASI improved consistency and also reduced elevator, aileron, and rudder control activity. Pilots' comments indicated that the LASI reduced work load. An appendix is included with a discussion of the simulator effectiveness for visual flight tasks.
