The experiments on the submerged tubes, with entrance having square comers and of lengths varying from thirty-one hundredths feet to fourteen feet, have been designated by series, (Numbers 1 to 7), the tubes being shown in detail on Plate V. In series Number 1, the length of the tube was three and threequarters inches, equal to thirty-one hundredths feet, the same as the thickness of the bulkhead wall, the opening being cut through this wall at an angle as near ninety degrees as possible. The roughness from the effect of the saw was taken off with a smoothing plane, but sand paper was not used. The end of the wood was exposed at the sides of the tube as shown in the details'. In Series Number 2. the length of the tube was made equal to sixtytwo hundredths feet, double the length of Series Number 1, by adding wooden strips on the down-stream side. These wooden strips were surfaced and fitted closely to the down-stream edge of the previous tube so that the effect of the joint was practically eliminated. In Series Numbers 3, 4, 5 and 6. the length of the tube in each wise was made double the length of the preceding series number, becoming respectively one and twenty-five hundredths feet, two and one-half feet, five feet and ten feet. In Series Number 7, the length of the tube was made fourteen feet, about the extreme length possible with the arrangement of bulkhead and weir channels at that time. The outlet end of the submerged tube (with the single exception of the tube fourteen feet long, termed 7c') projected into the water on the down stream side of the bulkhead and was firmly braced to the sides of the ten foot channel, the braces being arranged in such a way as not to interfere with the flow through...

Book excerpt: Spanish soccer is on top of the world, at international and club level, with the best teams and a seemingly endless supply of exciting and stylish players. While the Spanish economy struggles, its soccer flourishes, deeply embedded throughout Spanish social and cultural life. But the relationship between soccer, culture and national identity in Spain is complex. This fascinating, in-depth study shines new light on Spanish soccer by examining the role this sport plays in Basque identity, consolidated in Athletic Club of Bilbao, the century-old soccer club located in the birthplace of Basque nationalism. Athletic Bilbao has a unique player recruitment policy, allowing only Basque-born players or those developed at the youth academies of Basque clubs to play for the team, a policy that rejects the internationalism of contemporary globalised soccer. Despite this, the club has never been relegated from the top division of Spanish football. A particularly tight bond exists between fans, their club and the players, with Athletic representing a beacon of Basque national identity. This book is an ethnography of a soccer culture where origins, nationalism, gender relations, power and passion, lifecycle events and death rituals gain new meanings as they become, below and beyond the playing field, a matter of creative contention and communal affirmation. Based on unique, in-depth ethnographic research, this book investigates how a soccer club and soccer fandom affect the life of a community, interweaving empirical research material with key contemporary themes in the social sciences, and placing the study in the wider context of Spanish political and sporting cultures. Filling a key gap in the literature on contemporary Spain, and on wider soccer cultures, this book is fascinating reading for anybody with an interest in sport, anthropology, sociology, political science, or cultural and gender studies.

Book excerpt: At the beginning of the twentieth century, soccer was widely accepted as the most popular game in the western world. In the space of a few decades, it had become the best-supported team game in Britain, watched and played by more boys and men than any other sport. Yet here was a game with strong traditional folk roots and a history that stretched back to the late Middle Ages. In the course of the nineteenth century, football was transformed, mainly within the British public schools, to become the codified and disciplined game of urban working men. The passion for the game spread from one town to another, a passion that, though familiar today, was new in the years after 1870. Thereafter, the game rapidly spread to much of the world: to Europe, South America and a host of other societies. This book tells the story of the rise of this remarkable British game and the way it became the game of the masses across the world. In the wealth of literature about football published in recent years, no other book provides so concise and colourful an account as The People's Game.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the emergence and expansion of media markets; high-performance sport’s transformation by, and effects upon, Cold War dynamics and inter-relations and the implications of the Treaty of Rome for an emerging European identity in sport as in other areas. It traces the connections between the forces of ideological division, economic growth, leisure consumption, European integration and the development of European sport, and examines the role of sport in the changing relationship between Europe and the US. Illuminating a key moment in global cultural history, this book is important reading for any student or scholar working in international studies, modern history or sport.
