Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories from Austria, China, Germany, USA, and Russia. "Old People's Folly" features a cantankerous, disabled old lady protagonist living a difficult life many generations after the collapse of modern society. When she meets a young and idealistic woman from before the collapse, whose personality has been digitally stored, there's both a culture clash and a generational divide. Can the two find something in common in order to help a teenager in need? "The Life Cycle of a Cyber-Bar" is a madcap, unorthodox narrative that may have minor notes of Douglas Adams but is really unlike anything you've read. To say too much would be to spoil the story. Alexa Seidel returns to the pages of Future SF with a dark novelette about a xenoarchaeologist who finds more in an alien dig than she bargained for. I mean, does anyone ever find nice things in a creepy alien structure? Whether or not you know Jane Espenson by name, you've probably enjoyed her work. She's written for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Game of Thrones, Gilmore Girls, Battlestar Galactica, and, most recently, Foundation. Her epistolary story is about a despicable human being who ends up doing something very good, despite himself. Finally. there's a story by another returning author, Oleg Divov. His satirical and very Russian look at the process of elections is guaranteed to feel relevant to modern readers everywhere.

Book excerpt: Mike Ashley's acclaimed history of science-fiction magazines comes to the 1980s with Science-Fiction Rebels: The Story of the Science Fiction Magazines from 1981 to 1990. This volume charts a significant revolution throughout science fiction, much of which was driven by the alternative press, and by new editors at the leading magazines. The period saw the emergence of the cyberpunk movement, and the drive for, what David Hartwell called, 'The Hard SF Renaissance', which was driven from within Britain. Ashley plots the rise of many new authors in both strands: William Gibson, John Shirley, Bruce Sterling, John Kessel, Pat Cadigan, Rudy Rucker in cyberpunk, and Stephen Baxter, Alistair Reynolds, Peter Hamilton, Neal Asher, Robert Reed, in hard sf. He also shows how the alternative magazines looked to support each other through alliances, which allowed them to share and develop ideas as science-fiction evolved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of Science Fiction attempts to descry the historical and cultural contours of SF in the wake of technoculture studies. Rather than treating the genre as an isolated aesthetic formation, it examines SF's many lines of cross-pollination with technocultural realities since itsinception in the nineteenth century, showing how SF's unique history and subcultural identity has been constructed in ongoing dialogue with popular discourses of science and technology. The volume consists of four broadly themed sections, each divided into eleven chapters. Section I, "Science Fiction as Genre," considers the internal history of SF literature, examining its characteristic aesthetic and ideological modalities, its animating social and commercial institutions, and itsrelationship to other fantastic genres. Section II, "Science Fiction as Medium," presents a more diverse and ramified understanding of what constitutes the field as a mode of artistic and pop-cultural expression, canvassing extra-literary manifestations of SF ranging from film and television tovideogames and hypertext to music and theme parks. Section III, "Science Fiction as Culture," examines the genre in relation to cultural issues and contexts that have influenced it and been influenced by it in turn, the goal being to see how SF has helped to constitute and define important(sub)cultural groupings, social movements, and historical developments during the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries. Finally, Section IV, "Science Fiction as Worldview," explores SF as a mode of thought and its intersection with other philosophies and large-scale perspectives on theworld, from the Enlightenment to the present day.
