Book excerpt: This book, an autobiography, starts with the story of a Jewish boy growing up in Nazi Germany, related from the viewpoint of a teenager. He tells us about his youthful experiences and impressions, the restrictions and degradations forced on Jews by a hostile, totalitarian regime, and the ultimate struggle to secure the permits and visas for a life-saving emigration. After his escape to Holland, he is caught there in the grips of war and survives the bombardment of Rotterdam. His adventures continue with his ongoing struggle to obtain the necessary transit visas in wartime Berlin as the Nazi's plan had escalated from hostility toward Jews to their destruction. His problems do not end when he finally reaches the United States. Eventually, however, he is reunited with his family. The author then takes the reader to New York City of the 1940s and US army life in World War II during his tour of duty in the Pacific.

Book Synopsis Fumbling the Future by : Douglas K. Smith
Download or read book Fumbling the Future written by Douglas K. Smith and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 1999-06-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ask consumers and users what names they associate with the multibillion dollar personal computer market, and they will answer IBM, Apple, Tandy, or Lotus. The more knowledgable of them will add the likes of Microsoft, Ashton-Tate, Compaq, and Borland. But no one will say Xerox. Fifteen years after it invented personal computing, Xerox still means "copy." Fumbling the Future tells how one of America's leading corporations invented the technology for one of the fastest-growing products of recent times, then miscalculated and mishandled the opportunity to fully exploit it. It is a classic story of how innovation can fare within large corporate structures, the real-life odyssey of what can happen to an idea as it travels from inspiration to implementation. More than anything, Fumbling the Future is a tale of human beings whose talents, hopes, fears, habits, and prejudices determine the fate of our largest organizations and of our best ideas. In an era in which technological creativity and economic change are so critical to the competitiveness of the American economy, Fumbling the Future is a parable for our times.
Download or read book Fumbled Call written by David E. Sumner and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atlanta insurance salesman George Burnett found himself at the center of a football scandal when he overheard a phone conversation between University of Georgia athletic director Wally Butts and University of Alabama football coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. Butts seemed to be giving Bryant play formations that would help Alabama defeat Georgia 35-0 in the 1962 season opener. When the Saturday Evening Post published Burnett’s story months later, Butts and Bryant successfully sued the magazine for libel. The case went to the Supreme Court where it was upheld in a landmark 5–4 decision that expanded the legal definition of “public figures.” Referencing more than 3,000 pages of letters, depositions and trial transcripts, the author reveals new information about this scandal and its resulting trial.
Book Synopsis Rumbling Stumbling Bumbling Fumbling by : Brian Jaeger
Download or read book Rumbling Stumbling Bumbling Fumbling written by Brian Jaeger and published by Brian Jaeger. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are not alone. You and I are connected, even if it's just because you're accidentally reading this book description right now. Books of poetry attempt to connect humans to one another. Rumbling Stumbling Bumbling Fumbling represents twenty years of Brian Jaeger trying to figure life out. You will read about thoughts on high school, college, dating (barely), marriage, and fatherhood. Many of the poems were written and edited while at UW-Milwaukee, and the author brings the reader along for a walk around that commuter college. The rest of the poems were written and often read for students at Menomonee Falls High School where Brian taught creative writing for a decade. In fact, high school teachers will appreciate content mostly appropriate for students and often crafted to demonstrate how to write poetry, hopefully without ever getting too highbrow. If you're looking for a book of poetry that also has surprising sports poems, this book is for you. You'll travel from a Nazi concentration camp to a virtual world two-hundred years in the future, always grounded in Wisconsin.

Book Synopsis Too Much Is Not Enough by : Andrew Rannells
Download or read book Too Much Is Not Enough written by Andrew Rannells and published by Crown. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the star of Broadway's The Book of Mormon and HBO's Girls, the heartfelt and hilarious coming-of-age memoir of a Midwestern boy surviving bad auditions, bad relationships, and some really bad highlights as he chases his dreams in New York City With a new afterword • “Candid, funny, crisp . . . honest and tender about lessons of the heart.”—Vogue When Andrew Rannells left Nebraska for New York City in 1997, he, like many young hopefuls, saw the city as a chance to break free. To start over. To transform the fiercely ambitious but sexually confused teenager he saw in the mirror into the Broadway leading man of his dreams. In Too Much Is Not Enough, Rannells takes us on the journey of a twentysomething hungry to experience everything New York has to offer: new friends, wild nights, great art, standing ovations. At the heart of his hunger lies a powerful drive to reconcile the boy he was when he left Omaha with the man he desperately wants to be. As Rannells fumbles his way towards the Great White Way, he also shares the drama of failed auditions and behind-the-curtain romances, the heartbreak of losing his father at the height of his struggle, and the exhilaration of making his Broadway debut in Hairspray at the age of twenty-six. Along the way, he learns that you never really leave your past—or your family—behind; that the most painful, and perversely motivating, jobs are the ones you almost get; and that sometimes the most memorable nights with friends are marked not by the trendy club you danced at but by the recap over diner food afterward. Honest and hilarious, Too Much Is Not Enough is an unforgettable look at love, loss, and the powerful forces that determine who we become.
