Book Synopsis Reading Michael Balint by : Helene Oppenheim-Gluckman
Download or read book Reading Michael Balint written by Helene Oppenheim-Gluckman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Balint is above all known for the "Balint Groups", which came to be a generic term for groups involved with the training of doctors and caregivers in the patient-caregiver relationship. Despite this, the origin and full import of his work has been somewhat overlooked. Hélène Oppenheim-Gluckman provides us with a concise account of how reading Balint has enriched psychoanalytic theory and its practice by broadening the indications for the psychoanalytic cure and the debate on psychotherapies and the training to the professional care-giver-patient relation. Reading Michael Balint: A pragmatic clinician shows how Balint must be considered as one of the major figures in the British Independent School of psychoanalysis, along with Winnicott and Fairbairn. Oppenheim-Gluckman argues that his ideas, and the implications of his work with groups of medical practitioners, have remained hugely influential within modern psychoanalysis and training in medical psychology. Reading Michael Balint presents a clear overview of the main tenets of his work. It provides a fresh perspective on Balint’s contribution and its importance for modern object relations theory and practice and brief psychotherapy. It will be an invaluable resource for psychoanalysts, psychoanalytic psychotherapists, counsellors and trainee psychoanalysts and doctors. Hélène Oppenheim-Gluckman is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, and has a doctorate in fundamental psychopathology and practises in Paris. She is a member of the Société de Psychanalyse Freudienne, the Société Médicale Balint, and a Balint Group "leader". She has published several books and a number of articles in psychoanalytic, medical, psychiatric and political-cultural journals.
Book Synopsis Encounters in the Word by : John Hill
Download or read book Encounters in the Word written by John Hill and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-01-18 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most devotional books offer a verse of Scripture with a cute story or quick anecdote. While these writings give a quick uplift and encouraging words, they fall short of challenging the reader to dig deeper. The author of "Encounters in the Word" approaches the concept of Bible devotions as an opportunity to get into the Word and enrich the reader's understanding of short passages. While the concepts are not unique, often the author uses unique approaches to the biblical concepts. Reaching beyond commonly held opinion and religious diatribe, these devotionals offer in-depth analyses along with poignant applications which apply to everyday Christian living. Having been written and collected over a period of nearly five years, these short studies cover a variety of subjects. It is the author's desire that they will be a blessing to the reader.

Book Synopsis The Moving Tablet of the Eye by : Nicholas Wade
Download or read book The Moving Tablet of the Eye written by Nicholas Wade and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eye movements are a vital part of our interaction with the world. They play a pivotal role in perception, cognition, and education. Research in this field is now proceeding at a considerable pace and casting new light on how the eyes move and what information we can derive during the frequentand brief periods of fixation. However, the origins of this work are less well known, even though much of our knowledge was derived from this research with far more primitive equipment. This book is unique in tracing the history of eye movement research. It shows how great strides were made in this area before modern recording devices were available, especially in the measurement of nystagmus. When photographic techniques were adapted to measure discontinuous eye movements, fromabout 1900, many of the issues that are now basic to modern research were then investigated. One of the earliest cognitive tasks examined was reading, and it remains in the vanguard of contemporary research. Modern researchers in this field will be astonished at the subtleties of these early experimental studies and the ingenuity of interpretations that were advanced one and even two centuries ago. Though physicians often carried out the original eye movement research, later on it was pursued bypsychologists - it is within contemporary neuroscience that we find these two strands reunited. Anyone interested in the origins of psychology and neuroscience will find much to stimulate and surprise them in this valuable new work.
