Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhizoctonia root and crown rot, caused by the soil-borne basidiomycete Rhizoctonia solani, is one of the most important diseases in sugar beet and from increasing economic relevance in many European growing areas. In the EU, no fungicides against Rhizoctonia in sugar beet are registered and existing control approaches cannot completely control the disease. Two fungicides were evaluated for their control efficacy using different sugar beet cultivars with varying levels of resistance. The effect on disease severity, white sugar yield (WSY) and soil-borne inoculum, analyzed by qPCR, was determined in naturally infested fields and inoculated trials. Both fungicides showed an excellent disease control with a similar efficacy, securing WSY and reducing the soil-borne inoculum. As an alternative, mycoviruses, which induce hypovirulence, were analyzed as a further approach in the future. They are highly pathogen specific and might deliver long lasting control, once suitable biocontrol agents for Rhizoctonia have been identified. A method for virome characterization based on randomly transcribed dsRNA extracts analyzed by deep sequencing in the combination with the identification of the RdRp domain as virus marker was developed. The virome analysis revealed that the hypovirulent Rhizoctonia isolate DC17 is infested with 17 different mycoviruses of which some show close relation to known hypovirulence inducing viruses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invasive fungal diseases have increased many fold over the past 50 years. Current treatment regimens typically require prolonged administration of antifungal medications that can have significant toxicity. Moreover, our present potent antifungal armamentarium fails to eradicate fungal pathogens from certain compromised hosts. Additionally, invasive fungal diseases continue to have unacceptably high mortality rates. A growing body of work has focused on the utility of vaccines and/or immunotherapy as a powerful tool in combating mycoses, either for the active treatment, as an adjuvant, or in the prevention of specific fungal pathogens. This Research Topic will detail the exciting progress in developing vaccines and immunotherapy for fungi.

Book excerpt: The introduction of contaminants, due to rapid urbanization and anthropogenic activities into the environment, causes distress to the physio-chemical systems including living organisms, which possibly is threatening the dynamics of nature as well as the soil biology by producing certain xenobiotics. Hence, there is an immediate global demand for the diminution of such contaminants and xenobiotics that can otherwise adversely affect the living organisms. Some toxic xenobiotics include synthetic organochlorides such as PAHs and some fractions of crude oil and coal. Over time, microbial remediation processes have been accelerated to produce better, more eco-friendly, and more biodegradable solutions for complete dissemination of these xenobiotic compounds. The advancements in microbiology and biotechnology led to the launch of microbial biotechnology as a separate area of research and contributed dramatically to the development of areas like agriculture, environment, biopharmaceutics, fermented foods, and more. The Handbook of Research on Microbial Remediation and Microbial Biotechnology for Sustainable Soil provides a detailed comprehensive account for microbial treatment technologies, bioremediation strategies, biotechnology, and the important microbial species involved in remediation. The chapters focus on recent developments in microbial biotechnology in the areas of agriculture and environment and the physiology, biochemistry, and the mechanisms of remediation along with a future outlook. This book is ideal for scientists, biologists, academicians, students, and researchers in the fields of life sciences, microbiology, environmental science, environmental engineering, biotechnology, agriculture, and health sciences.

This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1800s, the discovery of new viruses was a gradual process. Viruses were described one by one using a suite of techniques such as (electron) microscopy and viral culture. Investigators were usually interested in a disease state within an organism, and expeditions in viral ecology were rare. The advent of metagenomics using high-throughput sequencing has revolutionized not only the rate of virus discovery, but also the nature of the discoveries. For example, the viral ecology and etiology of many human diseases are being characterized, non-pathogenic viral commensals are ubiquitous, and the description of environmental viromes is making progress. This Frontiers in Virology Research Topic showcases how metagenomic and bioinformatic approaches have been combined to discover, classify and characterize novel viruses.
