Book excerpt: The first book-length look at one of upstate New York's most notable artists, From Stonecutter to Sculptor traces the long and prolific career of Charles Calverley, who completed more than 250 busts, medallions, tablets, and statues during his lifetime. Beginning as a stonecutter in an Albany marble shop, Calverley then worked as an assistant to the famous neoclassical sculptor Erastus Dow Palmer for fifteen years. In 1868, Calverley began a successful career as a portrait sculptor in New York City; later he created mortuary bronzes for Albany Rural Cemetery. This celebration of Calverley's life and work draws extensively from the vast collection of the Albany Institute of History and Art. Represented fully are all periods of his career and the complete range of his sculptural production: busts, bas-reliefs, and medallions in plaster, marble, and bronze. Also included in this volume are Calverley's sketches of his bas-reliefs, the identification of a major unrecorded bronze funerary statue by Calverley, and a complete inventory of Calverley's known works. Elizabeth K. Allen is the author of Open-Air Sketching: Nineteenth-Century American Landscape Drawings in the Albany Institute of History and Art.

Book excerpt: Among Hawthorne's primary themes, the visual arts have usually been regarded as an afterthought and have only been examined to elucidate his own personal philosophy. Hawthorne's own contemporaries derided him for his 'mediocre' aesthetics and that view has been taken as received wisdom up to the present day. This study reexamines Hawthorne's aesthetics, and suggests that he was much more familiar with the art and artists of the time than has previously been acknowledged by critics. He developed his own eclectic and transatlantic view of art, a view which incorporated decorative arts like embroidery, while maintaining a modest estimation of his own talents. This book examines the full range of visual artists whom Hawthorne portrays. It argues that these portrayals illuminate the artist's dilemma of being fettered by New England Puritanism while at the same time being attracted to the richness and depth of both Victorian aesthetics and the artistic sense of Old World Catholicism. The ambiguous destinies of his artist-characters include misunderstandings and disputes, while at the same time they suggest a reconciliation of the conflicting sentiments and transatlantic perspectives of the writer himself.

Meant to be places where the living could enjoy peace, tranquility and beauty, as well as to provide a final resting place for the dead, the garden cemeteries would forever change the culture of death and burial in the United States. The ideal cemetery would become one in which ornamental trees, bushes, flowers, and waterways graced the ever more artistic (for those who could afford them) monuments to the dead. Previous to the 1830s, the deceased were buried in church lots, in small and soon overcrowded public lots, and even, occasionally in backyards and fields. Graves were often untended, weeds and decay soon took over, and the frequently used wooden grave markers rotted away. Some turned to a movement emerging in Europe, in which horticulture was starting to become a factor in cemetery planning, at a time in which cemetery planning itself was a novel idea. New England was the first region in America to take up the new ideals. The first such cemetery, Mt. Auburn, opened in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1831, and Mount Hope Cemetery, in Bangor, Maine, followed in 1834. Today, these cemeteries are both beautiful places to visit and important historical sites. The author takes readers on a historical tour of eighteen of the Northeast's garden cemeteries, exploring the landscape architecture, the stunning beauty, and delving into the rich history of both the sites and of those who are buried there.
