Sqirl all began with jam—organic, local, made from unusual combinations of fruits, fragrant, and not overly sweet—the kind of jam you eat with a spoon. Book excerpt: More than 75 fresh, flavorful, seasonal recipes from award-winning chef and the 2016 Chopped Teen Grand Champion, Eliana de Las Casas. With her newest book, Chef Eliana inspires kids, teens, and families to embrace seasonal cooking and to use fresh, local ingredients when possible. Eliana is particularly in tune with seasonal cooking--she has been working with and performing live cooking demos at farmers' markets for many years. Arranged by season (spring, summer, fall, and winter) each section of the book will have 20 recipes showcasing the best ingredients of that season. Recipes are divided by ingredient, so with arugula available in the spring you can make an easy skillet lasagna. Use watermelon in the summer to create Watermelon Panzanella; in the fall, extra apples can be baked into an inside-out apple pie, and winter cabbage for Latin Slaw will warm you up in the colder months. Eliana's mission is to inspire families to cook creatively for themselves and to gain skill and experience in the kitchen so that they live healthier lives.

The first book detailed getting Drift Away in running order, the terror of losing both engines off Sandy Hook, and other amusing stories. This book is truly more like a cruising guide, but rather than detail the trip and the marinas we stayed at as other guides do, I will tell you about some of the people we met and the fun we had. Most of the folks were other live aboards, but not all. Some were passing through, and others were locals. A friend once described cruisers as a small town that moved up and down the coast. live aboards tend to stay in one place for a long time before moving on, if they move on at all. That is the fun of the live aboard lifestyle. If you like a place, stay. If you don't, move on and explore the next place. This book has a goodly number of photographs. I love photography and I hope you do too. If not, perhaps you will after reading this book. Sit back and enjoy the trip!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late 1990s until today, China's sound practice has been developing in an increasingly globalized socio-political-aesthetic milieu, receiving attentions and investments from the art world, music industry and cultural institutes, with nevertheless, its unique acoustic philosophy remaining silent. This book traces the history of sound practice from contemporary Chinese visual art back in the 1980s, to electronic music, which was introduced as a target of critique in the 1950s, to electronic instrument building fever in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and to the origins of both academic and nonacademic electronic and experimental music activities. This expansive tracing of sound in the arts resonates with another goal of this book, to understand sound and its artistic practice through notions informed by Chinese qi-cosmology and qi-philosophy, including notions of resonance, shanshui (mountains-waters), huanghu (elusiveness and evasiveness), and distributed monumentality and anti-monumentality. By turning back to deep history to learn about the meaning and function of sound and listening in ancient China, the book offers a refreshing understanding of the British sinologist Joseph Needham's statement that “Chinese acoustics is acoustics of qi.” and expands existing conceptualization of sound art and contemporary music at large.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lushly imagined, sensual novel about memory, desire, and the power of storytelling, from a Booker Prize nominee. Geneviève is an outsider, raised in an orphanage, now living an isolated existence as a maid to the widowed Madame Patin in a small French village. A teller and collector of stories, she is entranced by Madame Patin's oft-told folktales, which mask cunning and doom beneath beauty. As Geneviève grows into a woman, her life becomes both more sensual and more dangerous. She flees her village home, escaping to another word-spinner, a poet who captivates women -- his mother, his mistress, his niece's governess, and, soon, Geneviève. The poet is kind, but he too is a collector of stories -- and sometimes of secrets beyond words. An exquisite, knowing, and irresistible novel, The Looking Glass introduces to an American audience "one of Britian's best novelists" (The Independent on Sunday).
