It's a place where no one is sick or poor, and the women look after each other and have a strong bond. The narrator has come to Friendship village to escape an unhappy relationship and is interested in the lives of the village residents, including Calliope Marsh, Mame Bliss, Mame Wallace, Amanda Toplady, and others. The people of the village use a folksy dialect that is entertaining and gives a unique touch to the stories. Zona Gale established herself as a realistic narrator of Midwestern village life when she started publishing a series of local-color stories set in Friendship Village. The inspiration for this incredible place came from her hometown of Portage, Wisconsin. This work gives the readers a glimpse of an early 20th-century midwestern village.

Book excerpt: It is a simple story-you will find small mention made of it-but having once heard it the romance had haunted me, and I was fain to come on it again: the story of the wife of Kiala, fit to stand niched with the great loves of the world... Peter, bareheaded, in an open-throated, neutral shirt, cutting the grass there beyond Miggy in her quaint dress, reading a romance. I forgot my work for a little, and watched for those moments of his passing. Miggy read on, absorbed. Then, for a little, I watched her, pleased at her absorption... I love it, I love this going back into old time and bringing out its sweet elements. I have said that there is a certain conservatism in which, if I let my taste have its way with me, I would luxuriate, as I might then indulge my love of the semi-precious stones, or of old tiling, or of lilies-of-thevalley, all day long. And it is so that my self-indulgence would lead me to spend my days idling over these shadowy figures in the old romances and the...

Book excerpt: We take up Friendship Village, by Zona Gale, and we wonder how Miss Gale could have thought of the things set down therein if they had not been really true! There must be a Friendship Village, otherwise it could never have been thus described. And we are glad there is, for it renews our faith in human nature and our courage and our human brotherliness to believe that Friendship Village does somewhere exist. And how we should like to go there! We should like to talk with Calliope, that uniquely clever and quaintly sensible and shyly romantic and above all big-hearted woman. And we should like to know the Proudfits -- now that we understand them -- who were ever "buyin' and livin' on the outside, judicious and refined and right about everything"; and Miss-Holcomb-that-was-Mame-Bliss who had "got hold o' some kind of a. Persian book, in a decorated cover, from the city, an' now she says your soul is like when you look in a lookin'-glass -- there ain't really nothin' there." But Calliope said: "Some mornin's when I wake up with the sun shinin' in, I can feel my soul in me just as plain as plain." And we should like to meet the little Timothy Toplady whose biggest oath was "Blistering Benson." We should like, indeed. to sit down among them all and talk over the affairs of the Friendship Married Ladies' Cemetery Improvement Sodality and other important matters of the village; that is the way the book makes one feel. But we cannot tell what kind of a book it is. It is the kind of book that is the despair of the reviewer. It is like a personality: only by personal touch with it can one know it. Therefore the baffled but delighted reviewer is compelled to fall back upon a simple recommendation, and that we joyoust make-to the grandmother by the fireside, the tired father and the mother, the girl and the boy; to everybody, read it, O do! --The Christian Advocate, Volume 84

Book excerpt: American author, playwright, and the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, in 1921 for Miss Lulu Bett, her dramatic adaptation of her novel of the same name. Zona Gale (August 26, 1874 - December 27, 1938) was an American novelist, short story writer, and playwright. She became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1921. Biography: Gale was born in Portage, Wisconsin, which she often used as a setting in her writing. She attended Wayland Academy in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, and later entered the University of Wisconsin, from which she received a Bachelor of Literature degree in 1895, and four years later a master's degree. After college, Gale wrote for newspapers in Milwaukee and New York City, for six years. "A visit to Portage in 1903 proved a turning point in her literary life, as seeing the sights and sounds of town life led her to comment that her 'old world was full of new possibilities.' Gale had found the material she needed for her writing, and returned to Portage in 1904 to concentrate full time on fiction." She wrote and published there until her 1938 death, but made trips to New York. She published her first novel, Romance Island, in 1906, and began the very popular series of "Friendship Village" stories. In 1920, she published the novel Miss Lulu Bett, which depicts life in the Midwestern United States. She adapted it as a play, which was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1921. "In addition to her fiction writing, Gale was an active supporter of the La Follettes (Robert Sr., Robert Jr. and Philip) and progressive causes. She was an active member of the National Women's Party, and she lobbied extensively for the 1921 Wisconsin Equal Rights Law." In the same year, she attended the founding meeting (in New York) of the Lucy Stone League and became a member of its Executive Committee. Her activism on behalf of women was her way to help solve "a problem she returned to repeatedly in her novels: women's frustration at their lack of opportunities." In 1928 at the age of fifty-four she married William L. Breese, also of Portage. Zona Gale, who was a frequent visitor to the Mission Inn Hotel in Riverside, California, became a close friend of Frank Augustus Miller, the founder of the hotel. After Frank Miller died in 1935 Zona Gale wrote a biography entitled "Frank Miller of Mission inn." A group of rooms on the fourth floor of The Mission Inn became known as "authors row" and the "Zona Gale room" is room 409. Gale died of pneumonia in a Chicago hospital in 1938.The house she built for her parents in Portage, now known as the Zona Gale House, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.........
