Book Synopsis The Liturgy of the Medieval Church by : Thomas Heffernan
Download or read book The Liturgy of the Medieval Church written by Thomas Heffernan and published by Medieval Institute Publications. This book was released on 2005-04-01 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume seeks to address the needs of teachers and advanced students who are preparing classes on the Middle Ages or who find themselves confounded in their studies by reference to the various liturgies that were fundamental to the lives of medieval peoples. In a series of essays, scholars of the liturgy examine The Shape of the Liturgical Year, Particular Liturgies, The Physical Setting of the Liturgy, The Liturgy and Books, and Liturgy and the Arts. A concluding essay, which originated in notes left behind by the late C. Clifford Flanigan, seeks to open the field, to examine liturgy within the larger and more inclusive category of ritual. The essays are intended to be introductory but to provide the basic facts and the essential bibliography for further study. They approach particular problems assuming a knowledge of medieval Europe but little expertise in liturgical studies per se.

Book Synopsis The Limburg Sermons: Preaching in the Medieval Low Countries at the Turn of the Fourteenth Century by : Wybren Scheepsma
Download or read book The Limburg Sermons: Preaching in the Medieval Low Countries at the Turn of the Fourteenth Century written by Wybren Scheepsma and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2008-08-31 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a long time it was thought that there were no Middle Dutch sermons dating from the thirteenth century. It was only after J.P. Gumbert had redated the manuscript from The Hague containing the Limburg Sermons that its contents could be assigned to that century. Most of the Limburg Sermons appear to be translations of the Middle High German St. Georgen sermons. But sixteen of these texts are known only in Middle Dutch, and among these is to be found material drawn from the works of Hadewijch and Beatrijs van Nazareth. Thus the Limburg Sermons emerge to take their place in the famous tradition of Brabantine mysticism.
Book Synopsis Un Dit moral contre Fortune by : Glynnis M. Cropp
Download or read book Un Dit moral contre Fortune written by Glynnis M. Cropp and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2018-08-31 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The anonymous fifteenth-century French verse translation of Boethius’s Consolatio Philosophiae, contained in a single known manuscript, Paris, Bibliothèque nationale, fr. 25418, fols 1–74r, is a revised and abridged version of the major French translation, Le Roman de Fortune et de Felicité, edited by Béatrice Atherton as her doctoral thesis for the University of Queensland (1994). The title of the present critical edition is derived from the opening strophe of the reviser’s Prologue: ‘Pour le Tout Poissant honnourer | … Contre Fortune … | Dez dis Böece vueil conter | C’om dit de Consolacion’, which indicates the Christian didactic purpose intended and expressed in moral lessons for living in this world. Consisting of Books I–IV only of the Consolatio, the text lacks the complex philosophical issues of Book V and throws into relief the dichotomy of Fortune and Felicity. Pruning of the mythological narratives, historical examples, and nature images by the reviser produced a somewhat lean abrégé of Boethius’s thought, but with Christian emphasis. With prudent editing, the translation constitutes a coherent whole and is recognised as one of the thirteen distinct medieval French translations of the Consolatio Philosophiae. p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify; font: 11.0px 'Adobe Garamond Pro'; color: #ffffff}

Download or read book Studies in the Harley Manuscript written by Susanna Fein and published by Medieval Institute Publications. This book was released on 2000-09-01 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in the Harley Manuscript is the first comprehensive examination of a manuscript that is of supreme value to literary scholars of medieval English literature. In an Introduction and fifteen essays a team of scholars considers many aspects of the 140 folios of this trilingual miscellany that preserves 121 items (or 122 depending on how one counts) from which we get a strange and privileged glimpse into the rich literary heritage that existed in England prior to the flourishing of vernacular poetry in the Richardian era. As the Contents indicates, the history and composition of the manuscript are considered, as are the Anglo-Norman, English, and Latin compositions that it preserves. This is a companion volume to the three volume complete edition of Harley 2253.
