------------------------------------ ABSTRACT The investigation was focused on the characterization of the fracture of plastic materials made up of isotactic polypropylene (homopolymer) containing different fractions of lamellar talc particles. Because of their rigidity and low cost, these materials are used at the present time for the manufacture of injection-molding parts, especially for the automobile sector. Different fractions of talc were dispersed into the polypropylene matrix by using a co-rotating twin-screw extruder. Two series of composites were prepared with different fractions of both untreated and silane-treated talc. The surface treatment of the talc with organofunctional silane was previously performed in order to promote be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the magnificent response to the call for papers for the 7th International Biodeterioration Symposium held at Cambridge, UK, some difficulties have been experienced in the editing of these proceedings. The numbers of papers submitted exceeded expectation and because of this it has been necessary to accommodate those not actually in the proceedings into the International Biodeterioration journal. A small number of papers were not suitable for publication and were therefore eliminated. Many authors disregarded the guidelines laid down for the length of submitted papers. However, every attempt has been made to accommodate the maximum number of contributions in the proceedings. The original selection included those which most nearly conformed to the length requirement. Even so this has meant, in many cases, cutting down the text, eliminating tables and/or illustrations and pruning the reference list. When references have been trimmed a note has been included to the effect that an extended list may be obtained from the author/senior author. Where it was not possible to carry out these procedures without seriously altering the text and the import of the paper they have been included amongst those to be published in the journal International Biodeterioration. The exceptions to the procedures outlined above are the invited review papers which have been presented in full. Happily, the authors have been conscientious in keeping to the guidelines laid down for these contributions.

The processing methods include extrusion, injection molding, blow molding, and thermoforming. Also covered are nanoparticle dispersion, distribution, and compatibilization, and applications of polymer nanocomposites. Nanocomposites have been of high research interest in the past decades and a number of practical applications are now emerging, such as in the automotive sector. Although there have been previous works on nanocomposites, they are not as current as this one and they do not have the emphasis on processing found here. Edited and written by leading experts in the field, this book is a major contribution to a growing and exciting area of research.

Nanocomposite materials constitute a rapidly evolving field of science and technology, of which the first applications are already on the market and many more are expected to follow. The admixture of relatively low amounts of nanoparticles (these are, by definition, any morphology having at least one dimension in the nano-range, i.e. particles, fibres, plates) within a matrix of polymer, ceramic or metal has a dramatic increasing effect upon the resultant properties (volume, surface and functional properties). Unusual property combinations can be obtained; resulting in a new class of materials for almost every application.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polypropylene (PP) is one of the most largely used man-made polymeric materials. This synthetic stereo-regular polymer has a high tensile strength combined with a low cost, which could explain it's wide usage and application. This book covers some important advances in PP research, including its synthesis, characterizations, modifications, and applications. A thorough understanding of propylene polymerization, mainly concerning its physical and chemical features, as crystalline morphology, for instance, is useful to understand how it could influence PP mechanical properties and heat resistance. These characteristics are directly related to PP rheology and consequently the tendencies to form composites or blends. PP hybrid materials amplify the possibilities of obtaining new useful supplies, and also allow recycling or reusing wastes or low cost resources, as ashes, besides increasing its value.
