Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the World in 80 Ways offers a (sometimes opinionated) discussion of 80 data-driven maps of our planet. Taken together, the maps tell a story about the physical world; about the impact our species is having on the world; and about how people live in the world – or at least how we lived immediately before the emergence of Covid-19. The maps lie. All maps lie. But the origins of the deceptions are explained, the data sources are signposted and referenced, and the readers are shown how to create their own maps using freely available software. The reader is thus armed with the tools needed to explore local, national or world data – on topics ranging from science to society; environment to entertainment; wealth to wellbeing – a valuable skill in an age when certain politicians are happy to refer to “alternative facts” and media outlets deliver data visualizations that sometimes mislead as much as inform.

Book excerpt: The inside story, told by excavators of the extraordinary discovery of the world’s oldest papyri, revealing how Egyptian King Khufu’s men built the Great Pyramid at Giza. Pierre Tallet’s discovery of the Red Sea Scrolls—the world’s oldest surviving written documents—in 2013 was one of the most remarkable moments in the history of Egyptology. These papyri, written some 4,600 years ago, and combined with Mark Lehner’s research, changed what we thought we knew about the building of the Great Pyramid at Giza. Here, for the first time, the world-renowned Egyptologists Tallet and Lehner give us the definitive account of this astounding discovery. The story begins with Tallet’s hunt for hieroglyphic rock inscriptions in the Sinai Peninsula and leads up to the discovery of the papyri, the diary of Inspector Merer, who oversaw workers in the reign of Pharaoh Khufu in Wadi el-Jarf, the site of an ancient harbor on the Red Sea. The translation of the papyri reveals how the stones of the Great Pyramid ended up in Giza. Combined with Lehner’s excavations of the harbor at the pyramid construction site the Red Sea Papyri have greatly advanced our understanding of how the ancient Egyptians were able to build monuments that survive to this day. Tallet and Lehner narrate this thrilling discovery and explore how the building of the pyramids helped create a unified state, propelling Egyptian civilization forward. This lavishly illustrated book captures the excitement and significance of these seminal findings, conveying above all how astonishing it is to discover a contemporary eyewitness testimony to the creation of the only remaining Wonder of the Ancient World.

Book excerpt: Pyramids had a specific function and this book endeavours to detail exactly how and when they operated. Pharaoh Khufu built what probably stands as the greatest ever construction that humans have produced (given the tech constraints of the time); the Great pyramid. Its accuracy, and size are just awe-inspiring; it was the tallest building in the World until the Cathedrals of Europe arrived on the scene! According to ancient historians though, Khufu was never buried there and when the Arabs first broke in to the upper chambers in 820AD, they found the sarcophagus empty! It had been ceremonially sealed without the king inside!! Are we expected to believe that they built the World’s greatest ever construction as a tomb, then sealed it forever, but without the body of the king? Isn’t that a little odd? The reality is, it was meant for something much greater than his tomb. What purpose does such a grand resting place for your body really fulfil? It appeases the ego of the living king, but thereafter, it achieves nothing. A hole in the ground can preserve the body just as well, and in fact it probably has, for that’s where most believe Khufu was buried––in an as yet undiscovered shaft tomb. Very unceremonious for someone who had such a magnificent structure built! Khufu’s father was King Snefru; he built the World’s two tallest buildings at the time. We could reason that one was to be his tomb, but then what was the other one for? The forgotten story of the pyramids is that they were principally built for the king’s Heb Sed festival, the most important event in his lifetime––should he live long enough to perform it. He had to wait 30 years before he could participate in this magical ceremony, so he spent 20 odd years building a structure that was vital for its success. After 30 years at the helm, the king was supposed to be ritually killed. Heb Sed enabled him to avoid this dire fate. His reign would be extended if he passed the rigorous tests involved in the ceremonies, but not only that, he would also become a living incarnation of the Sun-god. This ensured that he would live on for all eternity. Pyramids weren’t built for vanity, instead they were vital mechanisms for achieving these ends and so every king in the Old Kingdom constructed a pyramid to facilitate his immortality. This is the third and final book in the series, to be read after 'Architecture of Ra' and ‘Tombs of the Gods’.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to explore the significance of the concept of ‘monument’ in the context of the Achaemenid Empire (550-330 BC), with particular reference to the Royal Ensemble of Persepolis, founded by Darius I and built together with his son Xerxes. While Persepolis was built as an ‘intentional monument’, it had already become an ‘historic monument’ during the Achaemenid period. It maintained its symbolic significance in the following centuries even after its destruction by Alexander of Macedonia in 330 BC. The purpose of building Persepolis was to establish a symbol and a common reference for the peoples of the Empire with the Achaemenid Dynasty, transmitting significant messages and values such as peace, stability, grandeur and praise for the dynastic figure of the king as the protector of values and fighting falsehood. While previous research on Achaemenid heritage has mainly been on archaeological and art-historical aspects of Persepolis, the present work focuses on the architecture and design of Persepolis. It is supported by studies in the fields of archaeology, history and art history, as well as by direct survey of the site. The morphological analysis of Persepolis, including the study of the proportions of the elevations, and the verification of a planning grid for the layout of the entire ensemble demonstrate the univocal will by Darius to plan Persepolis following a precise initial scheme. The study shows how the inscriptions, bas-reliefs and the innovative architectural language together express the symbolism, values and political messages of the Achaemenid Dynasty, exhibiting influence from different lands in a new architectural language and in the plan of the entire site.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The looting of pyramids and mastabas in Egypt was big business especially just after a Pharaoh was entombed with his enormous wealth in treasures. Historians tell us that looting was practiced at all levels of society and was not particularly regarded as a disgraceful occupation. The looters are thought to have held inside knowledge from having been involved in the construction of the tombs and at times they were even part of the funerary procession. Mummified Pharaohs bodies were stolen and sold to collectors or desecrated. Nothing was sacred. The Medjay had a job on their hands trying to maintain security and although they were feared by many, it didn't stop robbers repeating raids on tombs as the rewards of their ill-gotten gains were very high indeed. The penalty for being caught "red-handed" in possession of stolen articles from a Pharaohs tomb and subsequently found guilty, ranged from lashing of the feet to capital punishment. The courts were awash with such cases on a regular basis and it was not uncommon for hefty bribes to be paid to officials to allow the guilty to walk free. A vicious circle of events therefore surrounded the looting, concealment and black-market sales of precious articles of jewelry, gold and mummified Pharaohs.Pharaoh Khufu was well aware of such activities. He did not wish his body desecrated or his treasure looted. He needed a full-proof method to conceal himself and his wealth into eternity. A great pyramid was required along with a great architect and master mason. The Great Pyramid has therefore attracted the attention of the world ever since it was built because Pharaoh Khufu and his treasures have remained highly elusive. The Pharaoh is reckoned to have possessed wealth far in excess of Pharaoh Tutankhamun. The architect responsible for the creation of the Great Pyramid and the elusive tomb together with a vast wealth in treasure was the architect and vizier to Pharaoh Khufu. His name is Hemiunu known to his family and close associates as "Hemon". Robbers, treasure hunters, general enthusiasts and scientists have tried to identify secret passageways and chambers in the Great Pyramid of Khufu yet all that has been found raises more questions compared to answers.Archaeologists, Egyptologists and teams of scientists and explorers have endeavored for many decades to unravel the secrets of the Great Pyramid with some success. However, the pyramid refuses to give up its deepest secret; the last resting place of Pharaoh Khufu. The theory is that if you find Khufu; you'll find his treasure! Explanations and interpretations of the possible methods that were used to construct the Great Pyramid have yielded incredible facts related to astronomy, planet earth, mathematics and religious significance to name but a few yet nothing much that has identified Khufu is either entombed there or is even the original builder. Despite the apparent absence of the famous mummie and his treasure, most admiration arises from the awe-inspiring respect for the enormity and accuracy of various geometric alignments and of course the mysterious and wonderful way in which the Great Pyramid was constructed over four and a half thousand years ago. The Great Pyramid is the oldest and last remaining of the original 7 ancient wonders of the world. For the first time you will discover how Pharaoh Khufu and the architect and vizier, Hemon, designed and built the most iconic and mysterious tomb the world has taken so much interest in. What you are about to discover has never been revealed before. The six pieces of the puzzle that reveal how the pyramid was built and where Pharaoh Khufu is securely entombed are actually in full view of everyone. Hemon not only designed the perfect illusion to conceal Pharaoh Khufu and his treasure but he then cleverly re-arranged and disguised the pieces of the puzzle to stop all tomb raiders.Be prepared to be surprised as never before.
