Sample Book Insights: #1 I had taken a day trip to France in February ten years ago to buy wine with my dad and husband. We had decided to drive to a town called Hesdin, which was close to Calais. It was two in the afternoon when we arrived. #2 We went to see the houses in the Seven Valleys, which were supposedly cheap, but we didn’t have enough money to buy any of them. The estate agent gave us three houses, which we thought was very generous, and we drove away. #3 We drove through several small villages and passed hundreds of soggy fields in which muddy cows looked miserable. We spotted a church spire just about visible in the distance, but with no sign of life. Eventually, we reached the location of the first house on the list. #4 We reached a town that was completely deserted. We didn’t see a single person the whole hour we were there. I spoke French with the man at the gate, and he let us in.
Book Synopsis Ecological Restoration of Aquatic and Semi-Aquatic Ecosystems in the Netherlands (NW Europe) by : Piet H. Nienhuis
Download or read book Ecological Restoration of Aquatic and Semi-Aquatic Ecosystems in the Netherlands (NW Europe) written by Piet H. Nienhuis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-11-30 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents the state of the art of aquatic and semi-aquatic ecological restoration projects in The Netherlands. Starting from the conceptual basis of restoration ecology, the successes and failures of hundreds of restoration projects are described. Numerous successful projects are mentioned. In general ecological restoration endeavours greatly benefit from the progressive experience achieved in the course of the years. Failures mainly occur through insufficient application of physical, chemical or ecological principles. Spontaneous colonization by plants and animals, following habitat reconstruction, is preferred. However, sometimes the re-introduction of keystone species (e.g. eelgrass, salmon, beaver) is necessary in case the potential habitats are isolated or fragmented, or if a seed bank is lacking, thus not allowing viable populations to develop. Re-introducing traditional management techniques (e.g. mowing without fertilization, low intensity grazing) is important to rehabilitate the semi-natural and cultural landscapes that are so characteristic for The Netherlands.
