Book excerpt: Arguably the single most influential literary work of the European Middle Ages, the Roman de la Rose of Guillaume de Lorris and Jean de Meun has traditionally posed a number of difficulties to modern critics, who have viewed its many interruptions and philosophical discussions as signs of a lack of formal organization and a characteristically medieval predilection for encyclopedic summation. In Fortune's Faces, Daniel Heller-Roazen calls into question these assessments, offering a new and compelling interpretation of the romance as a carefully constructed and far-reaching exploration of the place of fortune, chance, and contingency in literary writing. Situating the Romance of the Rose at the intersection of medieval literature and philosophy, Heller-Roazen shows how the thirteenth-century work invokes and radicalizes two classical and medieval traditions of reflection on language and contingency: that of the Provençal, French, and Italian love poets, who sought to compose their "verses of pure nothing"in a language Dante defined as "without grammar," and that of Aristotle's discussion of "future contingents" as it was received and refined in the logic, physics, theology, and epistemology of Boethius, Abelard, Albert the Great, and Thomas Aquinas.Through a close analysis of the poetic text and a detailed reconstruction of the logical and metaphysical concept of contingency, Fortune's Faces charts the transformations that literary structures (such as subjectivity, autobiography, prosopopoeia, allegory, and self-reference) undergo in a work that defines itself as radically contingent. Considered in its full poetic and philosophical dimensions, the Romance of the Rose thus acquires an altogether new significance in the history of literature: it appears as a work that incessantly explores its own capacity to be other than it is.

Book excerpt: "A radiant debut."—Emily Henry, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Book Lovers THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! Named One of the Hottest Reads of Summer 2022 by Today ∙ Parade ∙ PopSugar ∙ USA Today ∙ SheReads ∙ BuzzFeed ∙ BookBub ∙ Bustle ∙ and more! Six summers to fall in love. One moment to fall apart. A weekend to get it right. They say you can never go home again, and for Persephone Fraser, ever since she made the biggest mistake of her life a decade ago, that has felt too true. Instead of glittering summers on the lakeshore of her childhood, she spends them in a stylish apartment in the city, going out with friends, and keeping everyone a safe distance from her heart. Until she receives the call that sends her racing back to Barry’s Bay and into the orbit of Sam Florek—the man she never thought she’d have to live without. For six summers, through hazy afternoons on the water and warm summer nights working in his family’s restaurant and curling up together with books—medical textbooks for him and work-in-progress horror short stories for her—Percy and Sam had been inseparable. Eventually that friendship turned into something breathtakingly more, before it fell spectacularly apart. When Percy returns to the lake for Sam’s mother’s funeral, their connection is as undeniable as it had always been. But until Percy can confront the decisions she made and the years she’s spent punishing herself for them, they’ll never know whether their love might be bigger than the biggest mistakes of their past. Told over the course of six years and one weekend, Every Summer After is a big, sweeping nostalgic story of love and the people and choices that mark us forever.

Broken down into chapters, focusing on a particular aspect of the face. Illustrated examples. Charts and tables for easy reference Chinese face reading is deeply rooted in Chinese culture and evidence of its importance and use has been recorded as far back as during China's Warring States Period (481-221 BC). The Chinese believe that an individual's characteristics and personality traits are all etched onto one's face. Not only can one gain insight into another's personality, one's past and future is written onto his or her face. Understanding and being able to read facial features and marks (such as moles and wrinkles) means that a person is able to prepare him or herself for what destiny might bring. Filled with illustrations and examples and written in an easy-to-understand manner, this updated book is an essential read for anyone who seeks to know how an ancient art is still relevant for contemporary times. Dr. Evelyn Lip studied and trained in London as an architect. She holds a PhD and Masters in Architecture, and a Diploma in Interior Design. She was one of the first few authors to pen a book in the English language on feng shui in the 70s, when the subject was still relatively unknown in many parts of the world. Today, she is a well-regarded feng shui consultant, and also an accomplished artist and Chinese opera singer.

Book excerpt: After discussing Lavater's place in eighteenth-century German letters and his importance in the history of Western physiognomy, Dr. Tytler examines the literary portrait in the modern novel and suggests that the development of techniques of character description and the growth of observational powers of narrators and characters alike, as manifest in fiction from the 1790s onward, may be more fully appreciated when considered in the light of the physiognomical background previously delineated. Thus, the titular "plaything" is understood as both an object and a person, and play, in the early modern world, is treated not merely as a pastime, a leisurely pursuit, but as a pivotal part of daily life, a strategic psychosocial endeavor.

Book excerpt: To save himself, his friends, and his mission, a fugitive must put his fate in the hands of the last women he should trust—the same woman who sent him to prison four months ago. Last year, galactic translator Holden Sinclair had a great life. He was traveling the nexus with his friends, seeing new worlds, making money, and generally having a good time. The only cloud on his horizon was his unrequited crush on the captain’s girlfriend, but that matter resolved itself when she betrayed them to the Rhenians and they were shipped to the prison camp on the moon Marica-3. Since then, Holden’s only thoughts about Josie have revolved around getting even. Or so he thinks, until he runs into her again, in a brothel in Calvados. She’s disillusioned, contrite, and still as desirable as ever. And all too soon Holden finds himself right back where he started: torn between his loyalty to Quinn and the crew of the Good Fortune, and his feelings for Josie. But with prices on all their heads, their mechanic scheduled for public execution in the Calvados town square two days hence, and the Rhenian military drawing the net ever tighter around them... can he justify putting his trust in a woman who’s already betrayed them once? Can he risk the consequences of reintroducing her into their lives? And most importantly, can he stop his friends from killing her on sight? Genre: science fiction, SF, science fiction romance, SFR, space opera, action & adventure, romance, military SF, series, award winning SF, alpha male, enemies to lovers

Book excerpt: Professional cyclist Shamus McDonough suffers the physical agonies of a high speed crash and the emotional trauma of the death of a beloved teammate in a tragic accident at the Tour de France. He becomes entangled in an international criminal investigation when it becomes apparent this accident may have been intentionally caused by dark figures lurking around the edges of the sport in a well organized syndicate harvesting enormous sums of money selling performance enhancing drugs to athletes. Amid these dangerous underworld figures, lives and livelihoods of hundreds of nervous athletes hang in the balance between the risks of being caught using these drugs, and of failing to win in a business that demands success. Shamus navigates dangerously within this netherworld as he confronts his own demons in the pursuit of setting things right, which he feels compelled to do out of loyalty and respect for his fallen colleague, and out of a profound sense of guilt that will continue to haunt him until he finds the truth. Along the way he encounters the rollercoaster effects of an ill-fated first love, and the bliss of letting go and finding the life-partner to travel with him when he finds the path hed earlier planned no longer accommodates him. Then there's a really cool ending.
