Book excerpt: This study explored the predictive nature of the relationship between lay Catholic elementary school principals' professional experiences in Catholic and public schools, demographic information, school demographics, religious formation, and spirituality on the frequency of their spiritual leadership behaviors. Spiritual leadership was conceptualized using Ciriello's (1994) spiritual leadership framework and the behaviors of spiritual leadership were more fully defined using Catholic Church writings and Catholic educational research that describes the responsibilities of spiritual leadership (Barry and Brennan, 2008, Belmonte and Cranston, 2009; Campbell, 2000; Cook, 2001; Curran, 1996; Helm, 1989; Jacobs, 1996, McDermott, 1997; Miller, 2006; Muccigrosso, 1994, Robinson and Cirello, 1994a, 1994b, 1994c, 1994d). Data for this national study came from anonymous surveys responded to by 253 lay Catholic elementary school principals. Principals were invited to participate using a purposeful representative sampling to ensure inclusion of principals from the eight regions represented on National Catholic Educational Association's board. The Catholic Elementary School Principals' Spiritual Leadership Survey (CESPSL) used in this study was developed by the researcher. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Q-Q plots, a series of one-way, between-subjects analysis of variance (ANOVA), linear regression and stepwise regression analyses. The results of these analyses revealed no significant correlation between the combined years of experience a lay Catholic school principal has in Catholic schools, as a teacher and principal, and the frequency of their spiritual leadership behaviors. However, Catholic school experience was found to be predictive of the frequency of principal's spiritual leadership behaviors when their experience in Catholic schools was limited to only those years they served as a principal in their current Catholic school. This study did not find any correlation between the combined years of experience a principal had in public schools prior to their employment as a Catholic elementary school principal and the frequency of their spiritual leadership behaviors. This study did find nine demographic, religious formation and spirituality factors that were predictive of the frequency of lay Catholic elementary school principals' spiritual leadership behaviors. These factors include: the principal's age, catechetical certification, ongoing adult religious education, participation in Church Sacraments, support for Catholic Church teachings, participation in the cultural life of a Catholic parish, feeling close to God, daily prayer, and the practice of reflection and contemplation. It is hoped that the results of this study provide diocesan leaders and Catholic colleges and universities with a better understanding of the combination of factors that are correlated with the frequency of principals' spiritual leadership behaviors and that this understanding will help inform decisions that are made regarding the preparation, hiring and ongoing formation of lay Catholic elementary schools principals as spiritual leaders. Recommendations for future research suggest new ways to gain additional insights into the complex relationship between the lay Catholic school principal's professional school experiences, demographic information, religious formation, and spirituality factors and the frequency of their spiritual leadership behaviors as Catholic elementary school principals.

Book excerpt: This study examined the extent hiring for mission and personal religious formation play a role in a Catholic parochial elementary school lay principal's spiritual leadership. This study also examined the relationship between a principal's personal and professional demographics and a principal's spiritual leadership. Ciriello (1993) was used to form the spiritual leadership framework and Breslin (2000), Caruso (2002), and Murray (2011) were used to form the hiring for mission framework. The personal religious formation framework was formed using Nuzzi (2012), and Smith and Nuzzi (2007), and D'Antonio et al. (2007) and Smith and Nuzzi (2007) formed the demographic framework. The study's data was obtained from 191 Catholic parochial elementary school lay principals from randomly selected (arch) dioceses from each of the seven National Catholic Educational Association regions. Study participants completed an anonymous online 90 question survey that was created by the researcher. The survey data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, correlation coefficients, multiple regression, and analysis of variance. The study's major findings include: incorporating mission into the entire principal hiring process is a significant factor in the principal exhibiting spiritual leadership in the areas of faith development, building Christian community, moral and ethical development, and Catholic history and philosophy; principals who reported a strong personal religious formation manifested in faith beliefs and spiritual practices are likely to advance the school's religious mission through spiritual leadership in the areas of faith development, building Christian community, moral and ethical development, and Catholic history and philosophy; principals who take four or more theology courses in college or graduate school and/or study or major in Catholic educational leadership in college or graduate school are likely to exhibit spiritual leadership in the areas of Catholic history and philosophy and faith development. This study's information could be used by (arch) diocesan officials, pastors, and principal search committees to develop a Catholic parochial elementary school lay principal hiring process that will support hiring principals who are prepared to serve as the school's spiritual leader.

Book excerpt: Summary: The purpose of this research study was to consider the understanding and experience of a selected number of lay principals of diocesan secondary Catholic schools in Victoria as to the religious and spiritual dimensions of their leadership role and to identify what supported them in the discharge of their responsibilities in these domains of their leadership. Based on this purpose, I identified three research questions: 1. What is the understanding of lay Catholic secondary principals in Victoria, of their role as a ministry within the Catholic Church? 2. In what ways have principals experienced the spiritual and religious dimensions of their leadership role? 3. In what ways have principals sought and/or experienced formation beyond academic study which has enriched their practice of principalship? The theoretical perspective of the research is Interpretative Constructionism and the methodology adopted is Multiple Informant Case Study. The researcher has taken the stance of \U+2018\interrogatory fellow traveller' in relation to the research informants. The methods used to gather data are (a) focus group, (b) biographical written statements, (c) document analysis and (d) personal reflection in response to the previous three methods. In general, the findings of this research study suggest that lay principals of Catholic secondary schools who were informants in the study understand the role of principal of a diocesan secondary school as a ministry within the Catholic Church. While the informants did not use overtly theological terms to articulate this understanding, the accounts of their experience in principalship and the insights gained through reflection on their leadership behaviour have led them to believe that they are in fact exercising a legitimate ministry within the field of Catholic secondary education in Victoria.
