But is it the best alternative to form Church leaders? What is missing when business models are used in ministry? This book is about creating more sensitivity on how some of the secular models can unintentionally limit pastoral and ministry effectiveness. It suggests a competency approach to address leadership influences that are missing yet essential to ministry and the faith-based sector. In many ways, this book is a guide for securing and developing a more engaging ministry ;leadership, one that emerges from the intersection of the leadership and pastoral theology disciplines. Its guiding principle is “Leadership is a Spiritual Practice.” This book is a “must have” for leadership training programs and anyone engaged in forming for ministry leadership roles.

Book excerpt: If you want your company to thrive, you need to break one of the oldest unwritten rules of leadership. Leaders in nearly every industry have learned to keep a professional "distance" between themselves and the people who report to them—to avoid getting too close or too personal. This unwritten rule of leadership is pervasive and quietly destructive, and, little by little, keeping ourselves at arm's length destroys trust, collaboration, and the very fabric of organizations. When Tom Gartland became president of Avis Budget Group, North America, he wanted the corporate culture to become more "open and connected"—so he started with himself. His message was "business is personal—very personal." As he grew closer and connected more with those he was leading, he became a more effective leader, and those around him were inspired to create unprecedented results. Tom found that when we truly open up and care about the people we work with, we can transform organizations into sanctuaries where people feel a deep connection to one another, a profound sense of being part of an important mission, and extraordinary engagement in their work. The result? Employees who feel valued generate exceptional profits. After applying this business philosophy at Avis, not only did Tom see an increase in employee morale, he also saw a significant increase in the company's bottom line. In Lead with Heart, Tom provides an unconventional approach to business leadership, including advice and strategies on how to open yourself up as a leader, recognize potential in your employees, and increase employees' trust in you and the company. Lead with Heart is the revolutionary leadership book that will help managers and employees at all levels grow their businesses by connecting, honestly and meaningfully, with the people they lead.

Book excerpt: We are not built to just receive love. We are built to give love. To become tributaries to that great river of life flowing from the heart of God. By design, we are foreordained to be in a pure relationship with God and others for the joy of an abundant life. But how do we build trustworthy connections with faithful and true hearts? The Bridge of Hearts investigates God's spiritual instructions for our acceptance in the most secret place of his heart. The simple pattern he handed down to Moses on Mount Sinai illustrates the seven steps the Levites took to enter God's holiest place and commune with his Spirit. Jesus took the same steps to reinstate his connection with God after becoming the sins of the world-the same steps we must take to follow him through the narrow way that leads to life.Citing God's pattern as his divine instructions, The Bridge of Hearts shows us how to build solid spiritual connections with God and others, so we can finish our course with joy. It highlights a most essential truth embedded in Scripture-our works are not about earning God's love; they're about returning God's love.

Book excerpt: In Building Bridges between Chan Buddhism and Confucianism, Diana Arghirescu explores the close connections between Buddhism and Confucianism during China's Song period (960–1279). Drawing on In Essays on Assisting the Teaching written by Chan monk-scholar Qisong (1007–1072), Arghirescu examines the influences between the two traditions. In his writings, Qisong made the first substantial efforts to compare the major dimensions of Confucian and Chan Buddhist thought from a philosophical view, seeking to establish a meaningful and influential intellectual and ethical bridge between them. Arghirescu meticulously reveals a "Confucianized" dimension of Qisong's thought, showing how he revisited and reinterpreted Confucian terminology in his special form of Chan aimed at his contemporary Confucian readers and auditors "who do not know Buddhism." Qisong's form of eleventh-century Chan, she argues, is unique in its cohesive or nondual perspective on Chinese Buddhist, Confucian, and other philosophical traditions, which considers all of them to be interdependent and to share a common root. Building Bridges between Chan Buddhism and Confucianism is the first book to identify, examine, and expand on a series of Confucian concepts and virtues that were specifically identified and discussed from a Buddhist perspective by a historical Buddhist writer. It represents a major contribution in the comparative understanding of both traditions.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • ECPA BESTSELLER • “When it comes to the intersection of race, privilege, justice, and the church, Tasha is without question my best teacher. Be the Bridge is THE tool I wish to put in every set of hands.”—Jen Hatmaker WINNER OF THE CHRISTIAN BOOK AWARD® • Winner of the Christianity Today Book Award • A leading advocate for racial reconciliation calls Christians to move toward deeper understanding in the midst of a divisive culture. In an era where we seem to be increasingly divided along racial lines, many are hesitant to step into the gap, fearful of saying or doing the wrong thing. At times the silence, particularly within the church, seems deafening. But change begins with an honest conversation among a group of Christians willing to give a voice to unspoken hurts, hidden fears, and mounting tensions. These ongoing dialogues have formed the foundation of a global movement called Be the Bridge—a nonprofit organization whose goal is to equip the church to have a distinctive and transformative response to racism and racial division. In this perspective-shifting book, founder Latasha Morrison shows how you can participate in this incredible work and replicate it in your own community. With conviction and grace, she examines the historical complexities of racism. She expertly applies biblical principles, such as lamentation, confession, and forgiveness, to lay the framework for restoration. Along with prayers, discussion questions, and other resources to enhance group engagement, Be the Bridge presents a compelling vision of what it means for every follower of Jesus to become a bridge builder—committed to pursuing justice and racial unity in light of the gospel.

Book excerpt: So, you want to be a great leader? The first lesson of any successful leader is that it’s not about you, it’s about them. Leaders look out for the team as they inspire, encourage, and empower others. You pick them up and dust them off when they fall. You give them radically candid, concise feedback with a compassionate heart so they can learn and grow. You demonstrate integrity, respect, and trust. You are humble and self-aware. You become a great listener and encourage others to speak up and challenge the status quo. You make your team feel secure and trusting with one another. I started my career over 50 years ago as a clerk. I worked for many people over those years but only a few of them were great leaders. I watched and listened and learned. In time I got to try my hand at leading. That’s when the true learning began! I’m still learning, and at this point in my life I’ve decided to share what I’ve learned so far. Sharing is important to mewhether sharing knowledge, financial support, time with those who need it, laughter, or simply sharing stories with those who are interested. I’m a story teller, and in this book I’ve tried to tell a few of those stories and share the impact it had on my thinking, my career and my life. I have also seen where a good storytelling moved people into action, whether with a business agent deciding to come to the negotiating table to reach a union bargaining agreement, a director encouraging his team to brush up their project reports to be fit for submission, or when responding to a call from a person referred to me by someone I know. This book encompasses both lived experience and research that support the importance of leading with heart. As you read my story, I hope you can feel what I felt and can learn more easily some of the key lessons I had to learn the hard way. As you pursue your career, be daring, be brave, be humble, be patient, be persistent, and most of all be passionate. Remember, there is no greater feeling than “empowering the dreams of others.”
