Book Synopsis Healthy Voices, Unhealthy Silence by : Colleen M. Grogan
Download or read book Healthy Voices, Unhealthy Silence written by Colleen M. Grogan and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2007-09-11 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public silence in policymaking can be deafening. When advocates for a disadvantaged group decline to speak up, not only are their concerns not recorded or acted upon, but also the collective strength of the unspoken argument is lessened—a situation that undermines the workings of deliberative democracy by reflecting only the concerns of more powerful interests. But why do so many advocates remain silent on key issues they care about and how does that silence contribute to narrowly defined policies? What can individuals and organizations do to amplify their privately expressed concerns for policy change? In Healthy Voices, Unhealthy Silence, Colleen M. Grogan and Michael K. Gusmano address these questions through the lens of state-level health care advocacy for the poor. They examine how representatives for the poor participate in an advisory board process by tying together existing studies; extensive interviews with key players; and an in-depth, first-hand look at the Connecticut Medicaid advisory board's deliberations during the managed care debate. Drawing on the concepts of deliberative democracy, agenda setting, and nonprofit advocacy, Grogan and Gusmano reveal the reasons behind advocates' often unexpected silence on major issues, assess how capable nonprofits are at affecting policy debates, and provide prescriptive advice for creating a participatory process that adequately addresses the health care concerns of the poor and dispossessed. Though exploring specifically state-level health care advocacy for the poor, the lessons Grogan and Gusmano offer here are transferable across issue areas and levels of government. Public policy scholars, advocacy organizations, government workers, and students of government administration will be well-served by this significant study.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Clinical Examination by : Michael J. Ford
Download or read book Introduction to Clinical Examination written by Michael J. Ford and published by Elsevier Health Sciences. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important core skills for medical students to master are history taking and clinical examination. This extensively revised, eighth edition has been written with the philosophy that the acquisition of clinical skills is most effectively undertaken at the bedside. This pocketbook should be used as a companion, to be taken onto the wards and into consulting rooms where the information is most needed. The book begins with a system of history taking followed by a new chapter on the analysis of key symptoms. The remaining chapters cover physical examination of each of the major systems. Each stage of the examination starts with a detailed, step-by-step description of the examination method complemented by relevant illustrations, diagrams and tables on the facing page. This book is intended primarily for use at the outset of clinical training; once students have achieved proficiency in the basic skills of interviewing and examining, the book should also prove useful for revision. An invaluable starter book concentrating purely on the fundamentals of performing a patient examination. Covers each body system and outlines the principles of: - taking a history - how to conduct a physical examination - specific examination points as appropriate Concentrates only on the main symptoms of disease and then the normal and abnormal physical findings. Mention of specific diseases is confined to those most commonly encountered. Compact and pocket-sized to be carried around easily. · Now in full colour double-page format · Clear simple colour line drawings covering the essentials of a clinical examination. · Published simultaneously with the Eleventh Edition of Macleod's Clinical Examination

Book Synopsis Caterpillar Club Survivor by : Ross Smith Stagg
Download or read book Caterpillar Club Survivor written by Ross Smith Stagg and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spitfire pilot Ross Smith Stagg was one of 33 Allied airmen to defend Darwin against Japanese invasion on May 2, 1943. As one of 14 pilots shot down or experience mechanical failure in the ensuing battle, he parachuted into the sea 18 km from land, 100 km southwest of Darwin in the Fogg Bay area. He reached the shore in a dinghy. For the next 15 days he trudged through inhospitable country in a futile attempt to return to Strauss airbase. What should have been a few days walk turned into his worst possible nightmare as he stumbled aimlessly through mosquito and crocodile infested swamps. "It was almost six days I'd been without sleep, apart from a short period of unconsciousness and those few moments before I fell out of that tree," he said. " I became demented by the cavalcade of mosquitoes and hallucinating badly". His experience was only to worsen - he waded halfway across a tidal river to be confronted by a large saltie. Darwin historian John Haslett help Stagg map the original route by retracing his steps, even managing to relocate an American Kittyhawk Stagg found crashed in the middle of nowhere.

Book Synopsis Health for all Children by : David M B Hall
Download or read book Health for all Children written by David M B Hall and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-09-07 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since publication of the fourth edition of this highly successful book, there have been a number of Government initiatives, reports and policies on how the health of children can best be protected and promoted. This revised fourth edition incorporates recent material on the National Service Framework, 'Every Child Matters', the public health report 'Choosing Health', and the Children Act. It has also been informed by new research on a variety of topics including Sure Start, obesity, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and language acquisition. Health for all Children 4/e (revised) continues the themes of previous editions, in particular highlighting the growing evidence that behavioural problems and educational failure are not inevitable, and can be prevented. Thus the role of screening for developmental problems, while not ignored, is set in the context of what can be done to promote language development, reading, and enthusiasm for learning. Changes made to the fourth edition, and continued in this revised edition, include dealing with the health care needs of children of school age as well as pre-school children. It also outlines the needs of special groups of children, including those who are vulnerable or disabled and those living in unusual circumstances. The legislative framework is outlined and hallmarks of good practice described. Promoting children's health is a key focus, with updated information on nutrition and injury prevention, and emphasis on the importance of parent education and support, language, and literacy skills, with a review of behavioural management programmes for parents. It also describes the duties laid on PCTs with regard to education and social services support. This established and successful book continues to be essential reading for all health professionals who work with children, whether in the community or at the receiving end of referrals. It will also provide vital background knowledge for those charged with the responsibility of planning, commissioning and monitoring. This revised fourth edition provides the most up to date evidence in a rapidly changing field.
