Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Formal Discipline Meaning of the Doctrine. Arising sometimes out of a prion philosophy, and at other times out of naive observations on actual life, there has for a long time existed the notion that mental power was a sort of entity which could be turned in any direction, to the solution of any problem. This is indicated by such phrases as, "He is a man of ability," or, "He has had good mental training," or, "He was well disciplined in college," or "He has great intellectual power," or "He is a man of deep insight," or "unusual foresight" In all these classes there is no specification of the lines in which these abilities are sharp or effective, no peculiar specification being considered in the general statement. The same is commonly heard in describing people in other realms of expression, as, "He is a man of fine feeling," or "He is very sensitive," or "He is very appreciative or full of sentiment;" or still again in another general field, "He is a man of strong will," or "of great force." From these more general affirmations concerning human character, there are numerous gradations toward the specific. For example, "He is a good reasoner," "an acute thinker, '' "a shrewd observer," or "He is a lover of the beautiful," or "is fond of history, '' or "has great courage.'' In all these it will be noticed that there is no particular line in which these capacities are said to be manifested. The question is not put: In what subjects is he an acute thinker, or of what sort of beautiful thing is he a lover, or in what phases of life is he courageous, e.g., in fighting, or in facing an audience or a woman; or of what sort of history is he fond, or in what lines is he a good observer. Again the question may be more narrowly put: He is a good mechanic, but with what tools? She is a good musician, but on what instrument? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Formal English Grammar as a Discipline But in all these centuries, however much had been taken out of the content of grammar, there was a real need for the essentials of the subject as a means of acquiring the universal language of scholarship. Even in the seventeenth century Comenius wrote,2 I presume that no one can raise any objection to my placing [latin] grammar first, since it is the key of all knowledge. There was a disposition, however, to doubt even that fact. Locke3 somewhat later declared, I would fain have anyone name to me that Tongue, that anyone can learn, or speak as he should do, by the rules of Grammar. Languages were made not by Rules or Art, but by Accident, and the Common Use of the People. And whether Locke was right or not, the chief reason for the study of Latin grammar by English people passed when the language of scholarship became the vernacular. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Locke and Formal Discipline: A Thesis While the limits of this investigation do not include the primary question at issue in the First Book of the Essay, yet there are inthis discussion epistemological implications that have direct bear ing on our problem. Friedrich Paulsen says:1 Epistemological inquiries culminate in two questions: What is the essence, and What is the origin of knowledge? What is knowledge, and How is knowledge acquired In the First Book of the Essay, Locke is concerned with the ques tion of the origin of knowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of Formal Discipline in the Light of Contemporary Psychology, Vol. 9 Three important stages may be distinguished in the devel 0pment of the theory. The first is probably most familiar to the popular mind, in fact was the universal assumption before the recent developments in our knowledge. It is that there is a single function or faculty of memory, and that any train ing of that faculty must have its influence, no matter to what memory may be applied. On this theory, training anywhere would be effective everywhere. Our problem would be ah alogous to the problem of the physical culturist, for whom it makes no difference what work is done provided only the muscles are exercised} The arm gains strength just as cer tainly if exercised on the pulley in the gymnasium as if em ployed in wielding the blacksmith's hammer. Were the same analogy to hold, one could acquire a good memory by learn ing names from the directory with the same certainty as by taking a college course. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from School Discipline In connection with the classification of troublesome types (chapter XII), it should be understood that both the naming of the types and their grouping are only tentative. A rich field is here suggested that would amply repay intensive investigation. A series of questions and exercises is appended to each chapter. The aim of these questions is prima rily to provide a study outline for those who use the book as a text, either in class work or in individual study. Two types of questions find a place in these lists: first, fact questions that refer to the discus sions of the text; and, secondly, problem questions which aim to encourage in the reader an application as well as an understanding of the principles. Questions of the latter type are the more numerously represented. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Facts in Partial Justification of the So-Called Dogma of Discipline The faculty psychology Of the last century is long since dead, and its resting place has almost been forgotten by the scientists Of today; its ghost, however, stalks abroad among the masses, and its spirit still lives in the pedagogical theories Of many an uncritical thinker. From this faculty psychology it is no far cry to the dogma of formal discipline in all its purity. The assumptions it contains are well expressed by a clergyman quoted by Professor James in the first volume Of his larger Psychology: As for my memory writes the clergyman, it has improved year by year. Like a gymnast's muscle. This is a favorite comparison, the likening Of memory, or attention or any other supposed psychic faculty to a muscle that can be developed for any use by any kind Of exercise, and that is made equally strong by rowing, or boxing, or chopping wood, provided that the exercise is vigorous enough; and having been made strong by one exercise, can be used equally well for all activities. NO less a scientist than Helmholtz is quoted by Coover and Angel]1 as valuing particularly certain studies as a means Of intellectual training, since these studies taxed equally all the intellectual powers. Here we have the doctrine of form al discipline and its pedagogical consequence expressed definitelv and clearly. The implication Of Helmholtz's assumption seems to be that there are definite mental powers and that these powers can be developed in all directions by certain well-chosen studies.
