Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Products Output in Utah and Nevada, 1962 This report summarizes survey information collected in 1963 concerning the output of roundwood products from the forests of Utah and Nevada in 1962 A separate discussion with set of tables for each State is followed by a statement on survey procedures and sampling accuracy. Since the results of products surveys can be presented almost completely in tabular form, a series of tables is used here to present details. Discussion is confined to the highlights of 1962 production and to pointing out major production trends between 1952 and 1962. Data for saw log production are presented in more detail than data for other products because saw logs predominate in each State's total production. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Government Forest Work in Utah: March, 1931 An experiment on range where shrubs, principally oak brush, make up approximately 80 per cent of the vegetation, showed that such range should be grazed only to a degree that will permit the 1ncrease and perpetuation Of the more palatable browse species and grasses and weeds of approximately equal palatability, even though these last species make up considerably less than half the total vegetation and even though such grazing results in the nonuse Of the bulk of the less palatable shrubby vegetation. It is important to be able to recognize and correct overgrazing in its early stages. On many summer ranges in Utah the wheat grasses constitute the highest type of vegetation. If this cover is weakened by overgrazing, such plants as yellow brush, lupine, mountain sun flower, sneezeweed, yarrow, sweet sage, and pentstemon take the range and more or less erosion Of the soil takes place. If overgrazing is continued, these perennial weeds sooner or later are replaced by annual plants Of little forage value. Finally even these give way, leaving the area denuded and subject to heavy erosion, and eventually the fertile mountain slope 1s reduced to a barren waste. By learning what plants come in as the desirable type of plants begin to give way, it is possible to recognize overgrazing In its early stages, and to apply remedial measures. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grazing and Floods: A Study of Conditions in the Manti National Forest, Utah As the contest between the sheepmen and the cattlemen, and be tween rival sheepmen became more severe, the carrying capacity of the range rapidly diminished, and more travel on the part of the grazing stock became necessary to secure enough feed. The result was that, between 1888 and 1905, the Wasatch Range, from Thistle to Salina, was a vast dust bed, grazed, trampled, and burned to the utmost. The timber cover was reduced, the brush thinned, the weeds and grass cropped to the roots, and such sod as existed was broken and worn. The basins at the head of the canyons suffered most, relatively, because they contained the best feed for sheep and were less broken in topography and more easily accessible. Their scanty timber cover, however, made them particularly liable to removal of the soil by wind action wherever the surface cover was broken through and dry powdered earth exposed. These high mountain pastures, therefore, received not only the most abuse, but have been proportionately longer in recovering from its effects. In March, 1902, a large area was withdrawn from entry' for the Manti National Forest, and on May 29, 1903, President Roosevelt created the larger part of the present Forest. Subsequently additions were made, mainly at the northern end. Upon beginning administration of the new Forest the action of the Land Office was prompt and vigorous. On August 18, 1903, the Commissioner of the Land Office ordered all sheep removed from the western slope of the mountains. This order was carried into effect at the beginning' of the following grazing season. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Bureau of Business and Economic Research at the University of Montana (missoula) canvassed pri mary wood processing plants to collect the data for this bulletin (tables 1 through 19; and table 21, Resi dent mills and nonlocal mills (outside Utah) that consumed industrial roundwood originating in Utah were contacted. Mill operators were asked to supply information about the timber they received during 1992. This information included the volume, species, product type, ownership and county of origin of tim ber, and an estimate of mill residue volume by type. Table 22 contains the factors used to convert log volumes reported by mills in board feet, Scribner rule, and other units of measure into the standard Forest Survey units of measure, cubic feet and board feet, International inch rule. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Predicting the Durability of Forest Recreation Sites in Northern Utah: Preliminary Results One of the more serious problems facing recreation site managers today, particularly on campground and picnic areas; is that of maintaining adequate ground cover. This is an especially difficult task in semiarid regions such as the Intermountain West, where sites tend to support a sparse cover of ground-level vegetation. Because of different soil, moisture, and topographic conditions, some sites are much more durable than others in terms of the persistence of ground - cover vegetation. If we had tools for rating the durability of potential recreation sites, less durable sites either could be avoided or designed and managed in ways to increase their durability. Moreover, knowledge of the probable level of vegetation damage to a fragile site might allow managers to estimate any additional expenditures that may be needed if such a site is developed and used as a campground or picnic area.
