Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Insect Conditions in Arizona and New Mexico, 1956 The 1956 aerial and ground surveys revealed an increase in insect-caused mortality in Arizona and New Mexico. Based on these surveys and current data from established pine mortality plots, approximately 191 million board-feet of commercial timber, valued at 2 million dollars was killed by insects in 1955. Epidemic infestations in 1956 totaled 1. 6 million acres. The extent and severity of pine bark beetle damage showed a marked increase. Douglas-fir beetle activity increased. Fir engraver beetle continued to deplete the white fir stand in the Sandia Moun tains of the Cibola National Forest. An unidentified needle miner became epidemic on ponderosa pine. Defoliation of Douglas-fir, true fir, and Spruce by the spruce budworm declined. The Great Basin tent caterpillar outbreaks remained unchanged.
