Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Long's Garden Book: Spring 1930 The kind of soil, its mechanical condition and fertility, is another important matter. Here again we have to work with the material at hand, as a foundation. Unfortunately, the soil near the average] house and just where you want your finest display of posies, is the 'worst on the premises. This because much of it has been placed there in excavating for the basement of the house. But there is nothing serious about all this. I've taken the most wornout and unpromising soil and brought it up to a high state of friability, fertility and productiveness. Takes some time, work and expense, to do a good job. If top soil is too light and sandy (which is seldom the trouble) you can improve it by having some stiff or clayey soil hauled in and mixed with it. If the reverse is the case (and more often it is), then you can subdue it and make it easier to handle, in several ways. If to be had get some very fine sand, or silt, and put this on your garden 3 to 6 inches deep. Then plow or spade it under and turn it up again and keep working it over and into the native soil. The beneficial effect will last for years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Down the Garden Path has stood the test of time as one of the world's best-loved and most quoted gardening books. Ostensibly an account of the creation of a garden in Huntingdonshire in the 1930s, it is really about the underlying emotions and obsessions for which gardening is just a cover story. The secret of this book's success---and its timelessness---is that it does not seek to impress the reader with a wealth of expert knowledge or advice. Beverley Nichols proudly declares his status as a newcomer to gardening: "The best gardening books should be written by those who still have to search their brains for the honeysuckle's languid Latin name."As unforgettable as the plants in the garden are, the cast of visitors and neighbours who invariably turn up at inopportune moments are truly memorable. For every angelic Miss Hazlitt there is an insufferable Miss Wilkins waiting in the wings. For every thought-provoking Professor, there is an intrusive Mrs. M., whose chief offense may be that she is a "damnably efficient" gardener. From a disaster in building a rock garden---"It reminded me of those puddings made of spongecake and custard which are studded with almonds"---to a triumph in building an "avalanche" of chionodoxas---"Ah, but it was worth waiting for"---to further adventures with greenhouses, woodland gardens, not to mention cats and treacle, Nichols has left us a true gardening classic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you remember collecting birds' eggs and cigarette cards? Or the first appearances of wrapped sweets like Mars and Milky Way? The 1930s was a time of great progress, as engines took over from horses, and electric light from gas and oil. In the background, change was everywhere, with the Mallard speed record, the abdication of the King, and the increasing spectre of the impending Second World War. It was a time of home cooking, and day-trip holidays, when families kept chickens and children played with bows and arrows. This delightfully nostalgic book will take you right back to a different age, recalling what life was like for those growing up in the 1930s.
