Ever occurred to you to think what a great priv ilege we enjoy in being born in a Catholic country, blessed with the precious gifts of the faith and a Christian educa tion, surrounded by good examples and abundant sources of grace, by which We can so easily profit? To know God and how to serve him, which appears to us so simple and easy, nevertheless constitutes for the bulk of mankind a most difficult problem to solve and one which seems to us to be almost incapable of solution by many. Book Synopsis The Years of Jesuit Suppression, 1773–1814: Survival, Setbacks, and Transformation by : Paul Shore
Download or read book The Years of Jesuit Suppression, 1773–1814: Survival, Setbacks, and Transformation written by Paul Shore and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-12-30 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The forty-one years between the Society of Jesus’s papal suppression in 1773 and its eventual restoration in 1814 remain controversial, with new research and interpretations continually appearing. Shore’s narrative approaches these years, and the period preceding the suppression, from a new perspective that covers individuals not usually discussed in works dealing with this topic. As well as examining the contributions of former Jesuits to fields as diverse as ethnology—a term and concept pioneered by an ex-Jesuit—and library science, where Jesuits and ex-Jesuits laid the groundwork for the great advances of the nineteenth century, the essay also explores the period the exiled Society spent in the Russian Empire. It concludes with a discussion of the Society’s restoration in the broader context of world history.
Book Synopsis The Catacombs of Rome and Their Testimony Relative to Primitive Christianity by : William Henry Withrow
Download or read book The Catacombs of Rome and Their Testimony Relative to Primitive Christianity written by William Henry Withrow and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work, it is hoped, will supply a want long felt in the literature of the Catacombs. That literature, it is true, is very voluminous; but it is for the most part locked up in rare and costly folios in foreign languages, and inaccessible to the general reader. Recent discoveries have refuted some of the theories and corrected many of the statements of previous books in English on this subject; and the present volume is the only one in which the latest results of exploration are fully given, and interpreted from a Protestant point of view. The writer has endeavored to illustrate the subject by frequent pagan sepulchral inscriptions, and by citations from the writings of the Fathers, which often throw much light on the condition of early Christian society. The value of the work is greatly enhanced, it is thought, by the addition of many hundreds of early Christian inscriptions carefully translated, a very large proportion of which have never before appeared in English. Those only who have given some attention to epigraphical studies can conceive the difficulty of this part of the work. The defacements of time, and frequently the original imperfection of the inscriptions and the ignorance of their writers, demand the utmost carefulness to avoid errors of interpretation. The writer has been fortunate in being assisted by the veteran scholarship of the Rev. Dr. McCaul, well known in both Europe and America as one of the highest living authorities in epigraphical science, under whose critical revision most of the translations have passed. Through the enterprise of the publishers this work is more copiously illustrated, from original and other sources, than any other work on the subject in the language; thus giving more correct and vivid impressions of the unfamiliar scenes and objects delineated than is possible by any mere verbal description. References are given, in the foot-notes, to the principal authorities quoted, but specific acknowledgment should here be made of the authorÕs indebtedness to the Cavaliere De RossiÕs Roma Sotterranea and Inscriptiones Christian¾, by far the most important works on this fascinating but difficult subject. Believing that the testimony of the Catacombs exhibits, more strikingly than any other evidence, the immense contrast between primitive Christianity and modern Romanism, the author thinks no apology necessary for the somewhat polemical character of portions of this book which illustrate that fact. He trusts that it will be found a contribution of some value to the historical defense of the truth against the corruptions and innovations of Popish error.

Book Synopsis Sacramental Theology by : Herbert Vorgrimler
Download or read book Sacramental Theology written by Herbert Vorgrimler and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both resistance to and renewed interest in the sacraments mark current theological thought. This work acknowledges human limitations of the sacraments but stresses that God's relationship to human beings cannot be other than sacramental." Sacramental structures and events constitute salvation history, and thus permeate all theology. What makes this sacramental view comprehensible is faith; faith is an indispensable precondition for a sacramental theology. Therefore, the author first demonstrates the preconditions of faith on which sacramental theology rests, and what place it holds within the whole of theology. Following this, he briefly presents the concept of sacraments and the history of that concept, the teachings of Church tradition on sacraments in general, and the basic features of a sacramental theology. Next, he explains from a theological perspective the traditional sacraments of the Catholic Church, including related topics such as indulgences and sacramentals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines both the local development, role and impact of the Protestant Lubwa Mission in north-eastern Zambia, and the history of the church which grew out of it. The main chapters explore in turn the principal phases 1904-25 (founding of the mission and rapid expansion after World War I); 1925-39 (the consolidation of mission and church development); 1939-53 (the impact of war and relations with African members and early nationalists) and 1953-67 (the challenge of the Lumpa movement, reconstruction and European missionary withdrawal). The main themes explored throughout are those of the mission's educational work, the interplay of missionary Christianity and African culture, rivalry with the Roman Catholic White Fathers, and relations with the nationalist movement.
