James Pompaday lives with his family in New York City. He is very much an eleven-year-old boy. After James gets a pen-and-ink set for his birthday, Marvin surprises him by creating an elaborate miniature drawing. James gets all the credit for the picture and before these unlikely friends know it they are caught up in a staged art heist at the Metropolitan Museum of Art that could help recover a famous drawing by Albrecht Dürer. But James can't go through with the plan without Marvin's help. And that's where things get really complicated (and interesting!). This fast-paced mystery will have young readers on the edge of their seats as they root for boy and beetle. In Shakespeare's Secret Elise Broach showed her keen ability to weave storytelling with history and suspense, and Masterpiece is yet another example of her talent. This time around it's an irresistible miniature world, fascinating art history, all wrapped up in a special friendship— something for everyone to enjoy. Masterpiece is a 2009 Bank Street - Best Children's Book of the Year.

A star artist and style icon at her high school, she’s a master in the subtle art of not giving a . . . well, you know what. But now that graduation is here, she’s a little less sure. She’s heading to NYU in the fall with a scarlet U (for “undeclared”) written across her chest. Her parents always remind her that Black kids don’t have the luxury of figuring it out as they go—they have to be 110 percent prepared. But it’s a lot of pressure to be her ancestors’ wildest dreams when Lenore’s not even sure what her dreams are yet. When her family embarks on a post-graduation Mediterranean cruise, her friend Tessa is sure Lenore’s in for a whirlwind romance. But Lenore knows that doesn’t happen to girls like her. Then she meets Alex Lee. After their parents bond over the Cupid Shuffle, she ends up stuck with him for the remainder of the cruise. He’s a hopeless romantic and a golden boy with a ten-year plan. In short, he’s irritating as hell. But as they get to know each other during the picturesque stops across Europe, Alex may be able to help Lenore find something else she’s been looking for, even if she doesn’t want to admit it to herself: love.

Book Synopsis Für Elise for Classical Guitar by : Ludwig van Beethoven
Download or read book Für Elise for Classical Guitar written by Ludwig van Beethoven and published by Clear Note Publications. This book was released on 2020-12-31 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Für Elise" (for Elise) is the popular name of Beethoven's Bagatelle in A minor (WoO 59). This expressive, intimate and much played composition by Beethoven has been transcribed for solo guitar numerous times. In this transcription, which makes as few compromises to the original score as is possible, I'm taking the piece to a more advanced level technically to create an arrangement that is as accurate an interpretation of the original piece as is possible on solo guitar. This solo guitar arrangement requires intermediate to advanced technique with some short passages above the 12th fret. The guitar is in a drop C tuning, with the second string lowered a semitone to accommodate the expansive range of the lyric arpeggios. This altered tuning allows the piece to be played with resonating Legato and maintains the relationships of the original lines and harmonies that Beethoven composed. Karl Wolff - Ithaca, NY 2005
Book Synopsis The Legacy of Elise Hall by : Kurt Bertels
Download or read book The Legacy of Elise Hall written by Kurt Bertels and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The saxophone is a globally popular instrument, often closely associated with renowned players such as Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, or more recently, Kenny G. Less well known, however, is the historical presence of women saxophonists in the nineteenth century, shortly after the instrument’s invention. Elise Hall (1853–1924), a prominent wealthy socialite in Boston at the turn of the twentieth century, defied social norms by mastering the saxophone, an unconventional instrument for a woman of her time. Despite her career’s profound impact, Elise Hall remains relatively obscure in broader music communities. Her untiring work as an impresario, patron, and performer made a significant mark on the history of the instrument. Yet these contributions have been historically undervalued, largely due to gender bias. This collection of essays, written by mainly women saxophonists/scholars, re-evaluates Elise Hall’s legacy beyond a discrete history, updating the narrative by highlighting the ways in which her identity and the saxophone itself have influenced historical accounts. By analyzing the sociocultural factors surrounding this innovative musician through a contemporary lens, the contributors challenge previously held narratives shaped by patriarchal structures and collectively affirm her place as one of the pioneers in the history of the saxophone.
