Book excerpt: Excerpt from Football for Public and Player In the pages that follow the author has endeavored by means of simple diagrams, and explanations shorn as far as possible of technicality, to give alike to the spectator and the younger player, especially the ambitious schoolboy who has not had the advantage of expert coaching either on the blackboard or afield, some idea of the plays that have been and are successful under the existing rules, and of the generalship that either wins games or loses them with honor. The plays and the use of them tell the story, and if the spec tator will apply inductive reasoning to the big games, finding his rule of play from the cases at hand, he will find the fascination of the game more than trebled. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Football for the Spectator There is many a spectator who goes to a football game in blissful ignorance, not only of the higher technique of the sport, but of the simple rudiments of the game, and his or her pleasure might be greatly enhanced by atten tive reading of the manners and methods of this so popular autumn sport. This year some such pre liminary preparation appeals not only to the person who is going for his first time, but, in a measure, to a great many others who have some familiarity with the sport as it used to be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Change Signals: A Story of the New Football I am taking this occasion to thank all of my readers, boys and girls alike, who have been so kind as to write to me. Sometimes your letters have gone unanswered for a long time, I fear; and it is possible that now and then, entirely by accident, one has been lost sight of entirely. If so I am both sorry and apologetic, for your let ters are always a real pleasure to me, whether, as is so surprisingly often the case, they are filled with praise for my stories, or, as is sometimes the case, they call me to account for mistakes made. Your criticisms, always just, are perhaps better merited than your praise, and are quite as well appreciated. My thanks and my compliments, then, to all my correspondents for their kindly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Winning Football Game to play and to watch, but as a splendid sort of preparatory school for life - the success ful man is the one who can fight through adver sity, who can take punishment and come up smil ing, who's never beaten till the whistle blows. Football demands that sort of courage. And it develops and strengthens that quality in every man who plays it even reasonably long or well. Roosevelt's famous saying: Don't flinch - don't foul; hit the line hard, is basic football advice and first class advice for playing the bigger game beyond the gridiron. As the title of the work implies, the book aims also to make the game plain to the spectator who mav not have enjoyed the advantage of close acquaintance afforded the man who has taken an active part in the play on the field. Above all, however, should a perusal of the work give the reader, be he player or spectator, an adequate idea of the spirit in which the game is both played and viewed in its best form, the author will feel adequately rewarded for his labor. And from above rained down the light and radiance of other worlds. It seemed very strange to be so far away from home and fireside, very singular to find oneself present amid surround ings so weird, so unreal. It seemed very strange indeed to be directing a squad of cannoneers instead of a squad of football players. Strangest of all, came the certainty that it was very much the same thing after all, that the little problems and perplexities were very like indeed to the old problems and per plexities. Football, I reflected, is very like war fare, after all, and warfare would be very like foot ball, were there as much intelligence in it. There is more intelligence, I added, in one football game. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Light That Lies He had been obliged to miss two weddings, a private-car jaunt to Aiken, one of the Har vard-yale football matches, the docking of the Olympic when she carried at least one precious passenger, the sailing of the Cedric when she carried an equally precious but more exacting object of interest, a chance to meet the Princess Pat, and a lot of other things that he wouldn't have missed for anything in the world not withstanding the fact that he couldn't remem ber, off hand, just what they were. Suffice it to say, this miserable business of getting Off juries kept Sampson so occupied that he found it extremely difficult to get on with anything else. He was above trying to fix any one. Other men, he knew, had some one downtown who could get them Off with a word to the proper person, and others were of sufficient importance politically to make it impossible for them to be in contempt of court. That's what he called fixing things. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
