Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sergei Rachmaninoff—the last great Russian romantic and arguably the finest pianist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries—wrote 83 songs, which are performed and beloved throughout the world. Like German Lieder and French mélodies, the songs were composed for one singer, accompanied by a piano. In this complete collection, Richard D. Sylvester provides English translations of the songs, along with accurate transliterations of the original texts and detailed commentary. Since Rachmaninoff viewed these "romances" primarily as performances and painstakingly annotated the scores, this volume will be especially valuable for students, scholars, and practitioners of voice and piano.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces a wide range of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods used in the aerospace industry to solve engineering problems. Its format is arranged so that students and practicing engineers can understand the fundamental principles used in CFD, with sample computer programs for the solution of model problems. It begins with the conservation equations of fluid mechanics, including those relevant to turbulence models and continues with descriptions of numerical methods for the solution of parabolic, elliptic and hyperbolic forms. The methods are then applied in detail to solve equations for inviscid incompressible flows, boundary-layer flows, stability and transition calculations, inviscid compressible flows, and incompressible viscous flows and compressible viscous flows. A chapter is devoted to grid generation techniques for structured and unstructured grid methods, which are an integral part of modern CFD methods. The emphasis is on two-dimensional equations in order to present the material in a modest sized book. Source codes for selected problems are given in Appendices A and B to allow the reader to understand how these methods are implemented in FORTRAN and C languages, while exercises provide more hands-on experience.

Book excerpt: This updated edition second edition, with a timely new afterword by author Ken Goodman unravels a riddle that has long troubled parents, teachers and scholars: learning language sometimes seems ridiculously easy and sometimes impossibly hard. Embraced by teachers worldwide, whole language has sparked renewed interest in well written trade books instead of boring and unnatural textbooks that actually diminish interest in reading. A new generation of authors writing for children and young adults has responded enthusiastically to increasing demand for books that are relevant to our time. This 20th anniversary edition responds to renewed interest in whole language among parents, teachers, and administrators looking for more learner friendly alternatives to the hostile test and text book mandates of the federal No Child Left Behind act. Teachers and parents will find many ideas in this book for helping children make sense of print and build a life-long love of reading.

Link to the black & white edition: https: //www.amazon.com/gp/product/152149388X Digital Modulations using Matlab is a learner-friendly, practical and example driven book, that gives you a solid background in building simulation models for digital modulation systems in Matlab. This book, an essential guide for understanding the implementation aspects of a digital modulation system, shows how to simulate and model a digital modulation system from scratch. The implemented simulation models shown in this book, mostly will not use any of the inbuilt communication toolbox functions and hence provide an opportunity for an engineer to understand the basic implementation aspects of modeling various building blocks of a digital modulation system. It presents the following key topics with required theoretical background along with the implementation details in the form of Matlab scripts. * Basics of signal processing essential for implementing digital modulation techniques - generation of test signals, interpreting FFT results, power and energy of a signal, methods to compute convolution, analytic signal and applications. * Waveform and complex equivalent baseband simulation models. * Digital modulation techniques covered: BPSK and its variants, QPSK and its variants, M-ary PSK, M-ary QAM, M-ary PAM, CPM, MSK, GMSK, M-ary FSK. * Monte Carlo simulation for ascertaining performance of digital modulation techniques in AWGN and fading channels - Eb/N0 Vs BER curves. * Design and implementation of linear equalizers - zero forcing and MMSE equalizers, using them in a communication link. * Simulation and performance of modulation systems with receiver impairments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical handbook is designed to help language teachers, teacher trainers, and students learn more about their options for using computer-assisted language learning (CALL) and develop an understanding of the theory and research supporting these options. The chapters in New Perspectives on CALL for Second Language Classrooms synthesize previous CALL theory and research and describe practical applications to both second and foreign language classrooms, including procedures for evaluating these applications. The implementation of CALL at the institutional level is also addressed, with attention to designing multimedia language laboratories and creating collaborative CALL-based projects between educational institutions. Although many chapters locate their descriptions of CALL activities and projects within the ESL/EFL setting, the principles and activities described are equally useful for other language settings. The book does not require prior knowledge of CALL, computers, or software. To assist readers, a glossary of CALL terms and an appendix of CALL Web sites are provided. The book also has its own accompanying Web site (http://www.erlbaum.com/callforL2classrooms) presenting chapter abstracts, author contact information, and regularly updated links to pedagogical, research, and teacher development sites. By integrating theoretical issues, research findings, and practical guidelines on different aspects of CALL, this book offers teachers multiple levels of resources for their own professional development, for needs-based creation of specific CALL activities, for curriculum design, and for implementation of institutional and inter-institutional CALL projects.
